The Salt Lake City Public Library has a
collection size of 961,824 with an annual circulation of 3,854,418. The staff
consists of 190 FTE employees and an annual budget of $16.23 million. The Main
Library opened in 2003 with much praise for its ground-breaking architecture.
The building embodies the idea that a library is more than a repository of
books and computers—it reflects and engages the city’s imagination and
aspirations. The six story curving, walkable wall embraces the public plaza
with local shops and services at ground level. The building offers a 300-seat
auditorium and meeting rooms for community use. A rooftop garden offers a
360-degree view of the Salt Lake valley. Special spaces inside the library have
been designed for use as a teen library, children’s library, Technology Center,
and art gallery.
Much of the library’s administration’s
current work is focused on developing more efficient processes, more effective practices,
maximizing library resources, and increasing organizational trust. We believe
that these actions will result in a better library for the community and an
organization that is well-positioned for its next director, who will have the
unique opportunity to work with employees, board, and the community to make
Salt Lake City Public Library the recognized leader among urban public
libraries.
