Executive Director

The Salt Lake City Public Library has an exciting opportunity for an effective leader and strong communicator; we seek an Executive Director to lead our innovate staff, award-winning Main Library and five branches in vibrant, and beautiful Salt Lake City, Utah.  Salt Lake City is a growing, exciting and diverse community. The area is home to over 2 million residents, and will grow by 60 percent in the next 30 years. The city has a rich cultural climate and is surrounded by countless recreational activities, making it a top tourist destination and a fantastic location to call home. Salt Lake City enjoys pleasant, temperate weather year-round, free of humidity.

The Salt Lake City Public Library has a collection size of 961,824 with an annual circulation of 3,854,418. The staff consists of 190 FTE employees and an annual budget of $16.23 million. The Main Library opened in 2003 with much praise for its ground-breaking architecture. The building embodies the idea that a library is more than a repository of books and computers—it reflects and engages the city’s imagination and aspirations. The six story curving, walkable wall embraces the public plaza with local shops and services at ground level. The building offers a 300-seat auditorium and meeting rooms for community use. A rooftop garden offers a 360-degree view of the Salt Lake valley. Special spaces inside the library have been designed for use as a teen library, children’s library, Technology Center, and art gallery.
Much of the library’s administration’s current work is focused on developing more efficient processes, more effective practices, maximizing library resources, and increasing organizational trust. We believe that these actions will result in a better library for the community and an organization that is well-positioned for its next director, who will have the unique opportunity to work with employees, board, and the community to make Salt Lake City Public Library the recognized leader among urban public libraries.

We require at least ten years professional experience with demonstrated management ability in administration, budgeting, planning, and supervision Our ideal candidate is a skilled strategic thinker, an effective communicator, a capable relationship builder, a proven innovator who can manage change, an active collaborator, and a strong manager, mentor and leader. We are looking for a director who excels at communication, building teams and partnerships, empowering staff, and collaborating with other area agencies in a politically savvy environment; a librarian who can articulate and promote the library’s mission and work cooperatively with the staff and board.
The salary range for the position is $120,000 to $153,000, depending on qualifications, and a generous benefit package is also provided.
