Community Library Manager


The Contra Costa County Library is recruiting to fill one vacant 32 hour Community Library Manager position in Oakley, California.

Contra Costa County operates over 26 community libraries within a 750 square mile area and serves close to 1 million urban, suburban and rural customers with an annual circulation exceeding 7.4 million.

Community Library Managers are responsible for day-to-day administration and operation of a full service community library. Responsibilities include applying individual judgment and influence to manage human, financial and physical resources in a community library and supervise the activities of professional, technical and/or clerical level positions involved in library support and service activities; Plan, develop and implement community library goals, objectives, policies and procedures; collaborate with City staff in the planning and development of library programs and services; assess community library needs and formulate proposals and policies and other duties as assigned.

The Eligible list established from this recruitment may remain in effect for six (6) months.
 Typical Tasks:
·  Plan, organize and manage the activities of a community library ; ensure the efficient and effective delivery of high quality library services to the general public
·  Plan, develop and implement community library goals, objectives, policies and procedures that reflect the County Library's mission and services
·  Act autonomously to develop and maintain relationships with City leaders, community organizations, local businesses, schools, service clubs and "Friends of the Library" organizations, and make presentations to these organizations.
·  Collaborate with City staff in the planning and development of library programs and services
·  Plan and prepare the community library's budgetary needs; develop budget justification for staffing, service and materials; monitor and reconcile financial resources for county and city, grants, and donations from community organizations, businesses and library friends/foundation organizations
·  Manage professional level librarians, technical and/or clerical staff; exercise independent judgment in the selection, training and evaluation of staff; make assignments and counsel employees on work-related issues and take disciplinary action as necessary in accordance with County and department guidelines and direction, regulations or applicable MOU
·  Manage task forces in the development of County Library policies and procedures, committee projects or special assignments and make recommendations; interpret library policies and procedures to staff and the public
·  Assess community library needs and formulate proposals and policies to support such needs within the County Library and the community
·  Manage building security and maintenance issues which may include surrounding grounds; evaluate architectural drawings to assess new library interior designs, layouts, and circulation needs, and make recommendations
·  Anticipate and recommend computer technology needs and planning, including internet access and software, and web based research services
·  Manage acquisition and collection development, including any specialized collections; participate in centralized collection development to ensure collection materials meet the community's needs
 Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Possession of a Master of Library Science degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association, or equivalent curriculum.

Experience: Two (2) years of full-time equivalent professional/supervisory library experience.
OR
Three (3) years full-time equivalent experience working in a library, which may include two (2) years as support staff, technician or paraprofessional, and at least one (1) year at a professional/supervisory level.

3. Oral Interview: An oral interview will be conducted by a Qualifications Appraisal Board in Martinez, Ca. The Board will evaluate candidates in job-related areas. Candidates must receive a rating of at least 70 from a majority of the Board members to be ranked on the employment list. (Weighted 100%)

Assistant Professor

The School of Library and Information Studies at University of Oklahoma is seeking applicants for an Assistant Professor tenure-track position to begin fall 2012 whose research, teaching, and service contributes to the educational, professional, and personal success of children and youth. The ideal candidate will possess an understanding of the issues young people encounter living in a digitally connected society and be interested in contributing to the knowledge of 21st Century Literacies.

Requirements for the position include a doctoral degree (completed or nearly completed) in library and information science or a related field, a record of published research or demonstrated research potential, ability to work with multiple constituencies, and ability to deliver courses related to library and information services for children and youth.

Preferred qualifications include experience/demonstrated ability in the design and delivery of courses in a variety of formats. Additionally knowledge of and/or experience in the application of the American Association of School Librarians and/or the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education Standards are preferred.

Metadata and Digital Resources Librarian


The University of California, Irvine Libraries is seeking a librarian to provide metadata expertise and serve as the primary resource on MARC and non-MARC metadata. The Metadata and Digital Resources Librarian will be an integral part of both the Cataloging Department and the Libraries’ Digital Services Team, guiding the selection and use of metadata schemas for our evolving digital collections. The position will function within a cross-divisional team environment designed to facilitate effective access and maintenance of electronic and digital resources.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Head of the Cataloging Department, the Metadata and Digital Resources Librarian will lead and advise the Libraries' efforts in planning, implementation, use, and assessment of metadata content for digital resources. The incumbent will establish, document, and maintain metadata policies and be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and integrating metadata from multiple sources.  This individual will also be responsible for projects, workflows, and training involving MARC and non-MARC metadata for use in the digital repository, library catalog, and other discovery systems.

Additional responsibilities include serving as liaison to Public Services and Collections Divisions regarding metadata and digital resources issues; serving on the Cataloging Policy Committee; participating in UC system-wide initiatives related to the management of digital  resources; coordinating projects to provide access to system-wide shared resources; and maintaining awareness of and engagement with trends and developments in library metadata and digital standards with an emphasis on emerging media formats such as streaming media, eBooks, and electronic theses and dissertations. 

Required:
·         Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience.
·         Minimum of two years practical experience with non-MARC metadata in a library environment.
·         Significant experience with XML-based standards (e.g. Dublin Core, MODS, VRA Core, METS, PREMIS).
·         Professional or paraprofessional cataloging experience in an academic or research library.
·         Knowledge of current cataloging rules and standards including AACR2rev, LCRI, LCSH,  MARC formats, and the Library of Congress subject headings and classification system.
·         Demonstrated leadership or project management experience.
·         Familiarity with DSpace or other digital repositories.
·         Awareness of current issues and trends in metadata and digital library development.
·         Experience using OCLC Connexion and WorldCat database.
·         Aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail.
·         Demonstrated problem-solving skills and flexibility.
·         Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple assignments to ensure that departmental and library goals are realized.
·         Experience with an integrated library system.
·         Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
·         Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently in a culturally diverse team-based environment.
·         Ability to meet the University of California criteria for advancement and promotion.

Preferred:
·         Significant experience in the transformation of XML documents using XSLT.
·         Experience using MarcEdit.
·         Experience using Innovative Interfaces Inc. Millennium System.
·         Experience with loading records and batch processing of records.
·         Familiarity with archival description and best practices.

The Cataloging Department

The Cataloging Department is responsible for cataloging approximately 40,000 items annually including monographs, serials, AV, music, computer files, electronic resources, and government publications for all subjects and languages.  Including the Department Head, the staff consists of 5 librarians, 16 library assistants, and a varying number of student assistants.  The Department consists of three sections:  Monograph Cataloging, Serials Cataloging and Government Information, and Catalog Maintenance, Physical Processing & Repair.  The Department uses OCLC for cataloging and Innovative Interfaces Inc. Millennium as the Libraries' ILS.

The Libraries

The UCI Libraries are committed to innovation and excellence and are in a major period of change.  The Libraries consist of the Langson Library, the Ayala Science Library, the Library Gateway Study Center, and the Grunigen Medical Library.  These buildings contain over 3,600 public seats for study and research and provide more than 600 public access computers.

Librarians are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, thirteen paid holidays, and one day per month sick leave.  The University has an excellent retirement system and offers a variety of group health, life, and disability insurance plans.  Benefits, which may also include an attractive mortgage program, are equal to approximately 40% of salary.
