Special Collections LIbrarian

Position Description: Reporting to the Head, Special Collections & University Archives Department, the Special Collections Librarian has curatorial, instruction, and outreach responsibility for map collections and supports a broad range of departmental initiatives.

General responsibilities include:

  • Developing and managing print and manuscript map collections, sensitively building upon existing strengths and exploring new areas for development.
  • Coordinating instruction sessions utilizing map collections, developing public programming, and integrating the history of cartography into departmental activities.
  • Setting priorities for map collection processing and cataloging.Collaborating with colleagues working in areas of collection development, archival and manuscript processing, rare books cataloging, preservation, and digitization.
  • Providing reference services and supporting day-to-day operations, which may include some supervision of staff.
  • Developing donor and dealer relationships, particularly with map collectors, and cultivating campus and community partners.
  • Participating in Libraries’ initiatives outside of Special Collections & University Archives by serving on Libraries’ and campus committees and contributing to other relevant activities and events.
  • Maintaining a course of personal professional development through active participation in rare book, manuscript, and archives professional associations or other professional activities external to the Libraries.
Required Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated ability to work creatively in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or experience with emerging trends in rare book and manuscript librarianship.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively and sensitively with library and university colleagues, faculty, students, researchers, and donors.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in a Special Collections, archives, or museum environment.
  • Experience in or demonstrated knowledge of the antiquarian map trade, including acquisitions by purchase or donation.
  • Experience in or demonstrated knowledge of the history of cartography.
  • Experience in or demonstrated knowledge of best practices for digital mapping applications.
  • Reading knowledge of one or more Western European languages other than English.

Salary and appointment: Appointment will be made at the Librarian level with a salary range of $43,000 to $46,000. Start date is negotiable. Electronic Records Manager


The Raynor Memorial Libraries at Marquette University seeks a creative, collaborative, enthusiastic professional for the position of Electronic Records Manager. Reporting to the Head of Special Collections and University Archives, under the direction of the University Archivist, the Electronic Records Manager will focus on the management, acquisition, appraisal, description, disposition, and preservation of born-digital institutional records with historical, evidential, or administrative value to the university.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates the transfer and accession of electronic records; converts, validates, describes, preserves and makes accessible through appropriate digital asset management tools.
  • Assists in the creation of digital collections, using appropriate metadata standards, and creation of associated content in conjunction with the University Archivist.
  • Advises university staff and faculty in the proper procedures for transferring electronic records.
  • In consultation with archivists, assists in identifying appropriate workflows for electronic records received as a part of manuscript collections.

Senior Manager, Campus Library and Institutional Resources

St. Louis Community College is a multi-campus district comprised of four campuses and six satellites serving 718 square miles of St. Louis city and county and portions of Jefferson and Franklin counties. Head of Clemons

The University of Virginia Library seeks a progressive librarian as Head of Clemons, the Teaching and Learning Library. Clemons Library, one of the libraries that comprises the University of Virginia Library system, offers services, programs and collections that enhance student learning and support the teaching mission of the faculty. Technical expertise sufficient to understand issues relating to the design and implementation of technology services and to guide technical staff. Experience managing media collections and services. Experience in innovative library space design.

  • Configures and maintains the Libraries’ circulation profile and circulation functions in Innovative Interfaces. Collaborates with the Head of Library Systems who provides technical specifications and support.
  • Chairs the Libraries’ Circulation & Reserve Committee; in consultation with the Head of Library Systems, the Head of the Schow Science Library and the Head of Research Services, develops, reviews and updates circulation policies and procedures.
  • Works closely with the Head of Research Services to ensure the provision of seamless public services.
  • Generates and analyzes statistics on the use of collections and facilities. Proactively seeks ways to improve delivery methods and workflows to meet changing user needs and emerging technologies.
  • Participates in library strategic planning and works collaboratively with other library department heads to carry out the Libraries’ strategic goals.
  • Works with consortial partners (Boston Library Consortium and NExpress) and represents the College on various resource sharing committees.

Requirements:


  • MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution
  • 3-5 years library experience
  • Supervisory experience and demonstrated ability to lead and manage staff, processes and workflows
  • Experience with developing, implementing and managing an ILS circulation module
    • Demonstrated understanding of resource sharing and delivery services in libraries
    • Strong knowledge of emerging technologies applied to resource sharing and delivery services
    • Demonstrated user-oriented approach to service
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to strategic planning
  • Flexibility, initiative and the ability to work creatively, collaboratively and effectively, both as a team member and independently

Executive Director

The American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division of The American Library Association, is seeking an Executive Director. AASL’s mission is to advocate excellence, facilitate change, and develop leaders in the school library field. AASL provides continuing education (including a biennial national conference, biennial forum and electronic courses), publications (including a regular journal, Knowledge Quest, and an online research journal, School Library Research, as well as books and other resources), advocacy, research, service awards and a wide array of leadership opportunities. AASL also developed and administers a major grant to the ALA/AASL – the Beyond Words grant from the Dollar General Foundation.

The AASL Executive Director is responsible for day-to-day management of the division, including supervising a staff of seven and administering an operating budget of over $1M, plus a biennial national conference budget of $1.5M. The AASL Executive Director is a strong advocate for school libraries and the AASL mission both within ALA and externally.

The AASL Executive Director reports to the ALA Senior Associate Executive Director and an elected Board of Directors. S/he works collaboratively with staff and members in all areas of the Association. The AASL Executive Director is part of the ALA Member Programs and Services Team, which includes executive directors of eleven ALA divisions, as well as directors of ALA program offices, ALA Conference Services and ALA Information Technology and Telecommunications, and the ALA-APA Director.

Qualifications: MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited LIS program or M.Ed. from an AASL/NCATE (CAEP) nationally recognized program with a specialization in school library media is strongly preferred. Preference will be given to candidates who also possess school library and K-12 education-related experience, proven management experience, experience in professional association leadership, strong communication and inter-personal skills, and visibility within the school library and education communities. A successful candidate is visionary and would be able to build and leverage partnerships, work collaboratively with both staff and members, understand technology and its uses, and be an entrepreneurial risk-taker. Experience working with volunteer boards and revenue-based budgets is highly desirable. There is a need to travel on a fairly regular basis.

Starting Salary: Negotiable from $95,000, based on experience.
