Assistant Librarian, Tenure Track

The Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) University Library (http://www.ulib.iupui.edu) seeks a creative, energetic, and service oriented individual to serve on the Professional Programs Team, reporting to the library’s Professional Programs Team Leader. The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the largest and most heavily used libraries of manuscripts, rare books, and special collections in the United States. As the primary center of special collections within the library system at Berkeley, Bancroft supports major research and reference activities and plays a leading role in the development of research collections. Bancroft Technical Services (BTS) is the unit responsible for all of the technical operations of the Bancroft Library. BTS employs approximately 35 career and non-career staff and currently manages over fifteen grant-funded projects. BTS operations include: acquisitions, cataloging (original and copy), archival, manuscripts, and pictorial collections processing, and digital archiving. BTS takes a leadership role in setting national standards for technical processing, digital access, and digital archiving of rare books, archives, and special collections materials. A significant percentage of BTS processing and digital archiving projects is funded by grants or donors, leading BTS actively to partner with other campus and library units and with a variety of institutions throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, the state, and the nation.

Responsibilities

The Bancroft Library’s University Archives Processing Archivist reports to the Head of Bancroft Technical Services and is responsible for University Archives (UARC) and History of Science and Technology faculty collections that must be processed, arranged and described. These include both personal papers and administrative records covering a variety of topics and subject areas. The archivist works with the UARC Team to assist with the development and implementation of the records inventory instrument, field visits to campus offices, development of the inventory database, data input of survey results, analysis of the record reports, and creation of retention and disposition schedules.

The archivist has full responsibility for managing processing projects and supervising staff, which includes processing archivists, support staff, student assistants, and volunteers. He/she establishes priorities for arrangement and description of the collections, including the processing plans and finding aid structures. The archivist manages the unit workflow and work schedules, and establishes mechanisms for timely turn-around of such collections. He/she hires and trains unit student staff and edits/reviews unit staff work-product, especially the re-housing of the collections, labeling, and creation of finding aids and other descriptions. He/she plans the goals for collection processing and develops processing plans for specific collections in coordination with unit staff and curators in determining order, specificity, and appropriate level of description and analysis. He/she works with the University Archivists in the preservation assessment of collections and in selection of materials for conservation treatment. The archivist works with the BTS staff on appraisal of collections and administration of new acquisitions.

Qualifications:

Required:

-MLS from an accredited library school with coursework in archival administration and experience in an archival repository.
-Demonstrated knowledge and experience with processing, arrangement, and description of personal papers, organizational records, and University administrative records.
-Prior experience with development of completed finding aids.
-Knowledge of DACS, MARC, and application of an EAD encoding tool like EAD Express or WebGenDB.

Preferred:

-Familiarity with UC Berkeley administrative and faculty organization and functions.
-Familiarity with Bancroft Library cataloging, arrangement and description.
-Experience with document imaging projects which involve Electronic Document Management Software (EDMS), such as ImageNow software.
-Excellent analytical, interpersonal and communication skills, initiative and flexibility.
-Strong commitment to excellence in service and demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a complex, changing environment.
-The successful candidate will show evidence of effective project planning, management, and completion.

Access Positions

The Washington University Libraries are seeking individuals with a deep commitment to library leadership, innovation, and customer service to lead its two primary Access units (Circulation and ILL/Reserves). Individuals will have an opportunity to develop and improve services in these newly redefined positions.

CIRCULATION LIBRARIAN
Responsibilities: The Circulation Librarian is responsible for providing excellent customer service at the combined circulation and reference service point (Help Desk). The librarian will work closely with the Reference Desk Manager to ensure training is up-to-date and referrals are handled correctly. In addition, the librarian oversees stacks management and retrieval. The position requires mature judgment and supervisory skills, as well as a solid knowledge of unit policies and procedures and the Libraries’ integrated library system. The Circulation Librarian will play a central role in making the Help Desk be more responsive to users’ needs and expectations through the assessment of existing services and implementation of new services. The librarian will also work with the Head of Access and the Technical Specialist in finding ways to use technology to improve customer service and streamline operations at the Help Desk.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN AND RESERVES LIBRARIAN
Responsibilities: The Interlibrary Loan and Reserves Librarian oversees the interlibrary lending and borrowing, local and consortial requesting, and course reserves operations. The librarian develops policies, procedures and workflows for the interlibrary loan and reserves operations including copyright compliance. The librarian is responsible for training and supervising staff and student assistants and monitoring operations to ensure greater efficiencies and workload distribution. The Interlibrary Loan and Reserves Librarian will play a central role in finding new ways to be responsive to users’ needs and expectations through the assessment of existing operations and implementation of new services. In particular, the librarian will work closely with the Acquisition staff and subject librarians to find the most effective way to obtain materials for users. The librarian will also work with Head of Access and the Technical Specialist to explore new possibilities for using technology to improve and streamline operations. The supervisor is knowledgeable of a variety of software applications, including but not limited to Millennium, ArticleReach, MOBIUS INN-Reach, ILLiad, and the course management system (Ares).

With a materials budget of $3.8 million, split almost evenly between print and electronic resources, the Acquisitions & Serials Department Head will lead 7 FTE staff in the procurement and management of all collection materials for the William H. Hannon Library. The department acquires 18,000 books annually and subscribes to 1800 print periodicals, 22,300 e-journals and over 200 e-resources. The Head manages the acquisitions, serials, and electronic resources functions of the library, including oversight of expenditures against the library’s materials budgets.

Other position specific accountabilities are as follows: Develop effective utilization of technology to streamline workflow and processes; manage personnel including training and development; establish effective vendor relationships; coordinate budgeting and financial management for library materials funds; and represent LMU at various conferences and meetings pertaining to library acquisitions and technologies.

The ideal candidate must have broad knowledge of current trends in higher education, academic libraries, and the publishing industry, and an understanding of the issues of content ownership vs. access, including e-resource licensing. The successful candidate will be creative, flexible, and collaborative. Other skills and knowledge include: ability to analyze work processes and introduce appropriate technological solutions for efficiency and user convenience; strong financial management skill, and excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to win the trust and confidence of faculty, librarians, and library staff. Experience with these technologies preferred: Innovative Interfaces, Inc., Serials Solutions, and OCLC PromptCat.

A Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited institution is preferred, but a related master’s degree with appropriate experience may be substituted. A minimum of five years of progressively responsible academic library acquisitions and/or serials experience that includes supervision is required.

Hiring Salary: $59,880 to $80,000 commensurate with experience and salary history.

• Knowledge of emerging web and information technologies and ability to integrate them into existing tools and sites

• Comfort with developing web sites in both Unix and Windows environments

• Demonstrated web site design skills

• Ability to explain and to teach technology to a less- or non-technical audience

• Subject knowledge and demonstrated interest in at least one social sciences or humanities discipline

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
