Dean of Library Services

The William Paterson University of New Jersey invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of Library Services. This appointment will be effective July 1, 2014. Reporting directly to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean serves as the chief administrative officer of the library, providing leadership to a distinguished library staff of 16 full-time professional librarians (tenured or tenure track), 4 part-time librarians and 17 full-time professional and support staff members. The Dean holds the rank of professor in the library concurrently with the administrative title of Dean. S/he is a member of the Council of Deans and with the Provost and his senior staff actively participates in and contributes to long-range and strategic planning activities for the Division of Academic Affairs. The Dean provides oversight for the coordination of resources and services for 11,500 students and over 400 full-time faculty. S/he works collaboratively with the leadership in Information Systems and Instruction and Research Technology to optimize support for learning within the library and on-line. S/he represents the University to the community regionally, state-wide, and nationally, through professional and research library organizations.

The David and Lorraine Cheng Library provides print material and electronic resources in a 100,000 square foot facility, housing nearly one million monographs and bound periodicals, 17,000 non-print resources and enabling access to 70,000 e-books and 50,000 print and electronic journals. The facility also includes an auditorium, a computer lab, two classrooms and 11 group study rooms. The University is a member of the VALE consortium and NJEdge.Net, collaborations for the shared management of resources state-wide. Librarians play an active role in the University’s instructional program, conducting more than 300 library instruction sessions each year, in addition to individual research appointments and workshops. They are active in faculty governance, curriculum, and instruction in their areas of disciplinary preparation. Librarians with appropriate specialization collaborate with the College of Education to offer graduate programs for the certification of school media specialists. The Dean and members of the library faculty work collaboratively with other academic and public libraries in New Jersey and the tri-state area.

Requirements for the position include a master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program (typically an MLS or MLIS), and an earned doctorate in library science or a discipline relevant to the University’s curriculum; a minimum of ten years’ progressive experience in an academic or research library, with five or more years’ administrative experience including supervisory responsibilities. Knowledge of best practices in scholarly communication and library management, including strategic planning and assessment; and proven success in developing and managing a variety of digital library initiatives, as well as in supporting and promoting innovative library information technologies, are required. Exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated success in the pursuit and acquisition of grant funding and other sources of support are required. Additionally, excellent team-building skills, a participative management style and demonstrated success in a variety of campus-wide collaborations in support of shared governance in a collective bargaining environment are required. Evidence of scholarly and professional achievement and commitment to diversity are required. Significant leadership experience in regional, state or national library associations is preferred.

Principal Responsibilities:

The Director of Law Library and Information Resources is responsible for the direction and oversight of the John Joseph Moakley Law Library and the Academic Technology Department of Suffolk University Law School.

This position involves integrating the two functions into a cohesive organization to ensure active collaboration, leverage strengths, and promote communication. The Director of Law Library and Information Resources will oversee the Law Library administration, including: the selection, management, and development of staff; collection development; library services; budget administration; and policy and space planning. Assistant Dean for Collections & Digital Initiatives

She or he works closely with subject librarians to ensure that the scope and caliber of the Libraries’ collections meet the teaching and research needs of the multiple constituencies of the Ohio University community in a cost-efficient manner.

The Assistant Dean for Collections and Digital Initiatives collaborates with the Assistant Dean for Research and Education, the subject librarians and archivists, and the Libraries’ department heads for the advancement of digital initiatives, leveraging Ohio University Libraries’ significant special collections and anticipating the requirements of born-digital collections. He or she provides leadership in the development of a strategic, scalable, and sustainable digitization program that builds new partnerships across diverse interdisciplinary audiences and further integrates the Libraries into the teaching, learning and research activities of the University community.

Discovery Services Librarian

Responsibilities: Develop, support, and maintain all library discovery services, which enable access to library resources in all formats. These discovery services include AOK OneSearch and WorldCat UMBC. Maintain awareness of enhancements and changes to discovery interfaces and configurations. Lead a small team that assists with the evaluation and development of the user discovery interfaces. Provide training, documentation, and public assistance for the Library discovery services. Assist with troubleshooting electronic resource access issues, including remote access issues and networking issues. Work closely with other departments on the development of web technologies and assist in the development of mobile technologies. As a member of the Library Information Technology Services Unit, will assist when needed with troubleshooting equipment and software issues throughout the Library, including in the Digital Media Lab. MLS from accredited library school or information science program. Demonstrated experience supporting and developing one or more library discovery interfaces (such as Ebsco Discovery Services and WorldCat Local); experience with electronic resource support tools (such as EZProxy, Shibboleth, and SFX). Knowledge of web technologies and standards related to effective e-resource access and discovery. Knowledge of emerging web-scale library solutions. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), strong customer service orientation, and a positive, proactive approach to problem solving. Demonstrated experience managing multiple priorities.


Experience with EBSCO discovery products. Experience with web development, including PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Knowledge of networking infrastructure and troubleshooting. Experience with mobile technologies and app creation. Experience working with digital media equipment and software (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite and Final Cut Pro).

Social Sciences Librarian

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Social Sciences Librarian is responsible for serving as the subject liaison for the following departments: Historical Studies, Political Science, Public Administration and Policy Analysis, Sociology & Criminal Justice and teaches information literacy and selects appropriate information resources in support of the departments’ curriculum and research. The Social Sciences Librarian reports to the Director of the Research Commons, who reports to the Dean of Library and Information Services.   • Consults with departmental or school liaisons in determining collection development decisions
  • Teaches workshops, information literacy classes, and participates teaching courses for departments or schools
  • Creates teaching modules, bibliographies, and other finding aids
  • Provides reference services in person and through various digital methods
  • Works with the Department of Technical Services in the ordering of monographs, journals, online databases, etc.
  • Delivers library services and resources via the web and Blackboard
  • Plans and administers materials budgets
  • Participates in writing proposals and securing grants, particularly in the subject disciplines.
TERMS OF CONTRACT: Assistant or Associate Professor, 12-month continuing contract, tenure-track position. Tenure-track positions require excellence/meritorious in librarianship, scholarship, and professional service.

Public Services Coordinator

The University of Georgia Libraries seeks a Public Services Coordinator for the Special Collections Libraries (SCL) who will ensure effective and responsive frontline reference assistance to on and off-site patrons for all three special collections libraries: Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies, and Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection. The position coordinates the activities and schedule of the SCL reception area and reference desk; prioritizes and leads staff training on reference service activities; manages the Aeon patron management system and financial transactions; collaborates with IT personnel and vendors on Aeon system issues, enhancements, and upgrades; and provides instruction to patrons about creating researcher accounts and material requests.

The Public Services Coordinator is responsible to the Assistant Director of the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library. The Coordinator provides leadership in the administration of reference services, and coordinates and consults with representatives from the three Special Collection departments regarding the development and implementation of access policies and procedures. To achieve this goal, the Coordinator develops strong relationships with faculty and students by providing assistance with searching and browsing finding aids and databases, GIL (the UGA online catalog), GALILEO (a statewide information system), and other electronic resources; and developing web-based resources and other guides to SCL holdings. The Special Collections Libraries is composed of 18 librarians and archivists and 19 support staff. The Public Service Coordinator is a member of the University of Georgia Libraries’ non-tenure track faculty.

Provides reference services and effective orientation to resources housed in the SCL to patrons with a variety of interests and research experience, both on and off-site, from the university community and the general public. Establishes standards, policies, and procedures, in consultation with representatives from the three departments, for frontline reference services and provides training in archival reference in accordance with professional standards and UGA Libraries best practices.

Manages staffing the reference desk and serves a minimum of 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday; hiring, training, and supervising student assistants or support staff; preparing and administering the desk schedule; informing SCL faculty, staff, and student assistants of policies and procedures for public service areas; and providing information and direction to the University community, researchers, and donors.

Manages material requests and patron management system (AEON) system; troubleshoots system issues as needed, and acts as a liaison with Atlas Systems. Conducts training as needed for SCL faculty, staff, and student assistants to ensure that all employees maintain a working knowledge of the system and its developments. Collaborates with the vault manager and staff to ensure effective circulation of materials and proper tracking in Aeon.

Assesses the impact and growth of resources and services by maintaining and reporting user statistics for the SCL as a whole and for the individual departments. Analyzes usage statistics for inclusion in the SCL annual report. Serves as the primary training resource for effective querying of the AEON database and other analytical tools for assessment.

Manages fulfillment of photocopy requests for patrons and donors by supervising duplication student assistants; processes billing and payment transactions in Aeon; and arranges for shipping and handling of requests.

Maintains and updates the SCL website including updating the research policies and procedures; events and programs; and FAQ pages.

Develops and maintains SCL instructional tools, research guides, and specialized indexes. Explores and proposes technologies, including Web 2.0, to meet research, reference, and instructional needs of UGA faculty and students. Maintains awareness of new acquisitions and facilitates.

Maintains working knowledge of each departments’ usage policies and collaborates with representatives from each department to revise and develop access policies and procedures as needed.

Contributes to the mission of the SCL, and UGA Libraries as a whole, by participating in meetings, planning, program review, developing and evaluating policies and procedures, and strategic planning for the department as assigned.

Participates in library-wide communication by reading, responding to, and initiating information transmitted via GRAPEVINE (the Libraries’ listserv) and other communication tools, and appropriate library-wide or departmental meetings and asking questions, seeking clarification, or initiating discussion on library issues.

Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes in the organization and contributes to the team effort by assuming other similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Maintains an awareness of current trends in reference in the archival field by participating in professional activities.


Required Qualifications:
ALA-accredited MLIS, or Master's degree in history, public history, or related field (ACA certification expected in 5 years for continued employment); Two years of archival experience in providing reference services in an archives or special collections environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;  Excellent communication, research and writing skills; Excellent collaboration skills;  Working knowledge of relevant  intellectual property rights; Experience with Web design and development; Working knowledge of historical research methodology, and experience with standard bibliographic tools; Ability to lift and carry 40 lbs. and tolerate dust and inactive mold spores.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with the AEON patron management system desired. Interest or experience in genealogy and local history research desired.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:  Minimum annual salary for the position is $38,000.  UGA librarians are non-tenured faculty members.  UGA offers an attractive benefits program including a choice of health and retirement plans, dental plan, vision plan, tuition remission, paid relocation, 21 days annual leave, 12 days sick leave, and 12 paid holidays.
