Position: Head of Technical Services

Position Description: Reporting to the Marriott Library’s Associate Director for Scholarly Resources and Collections, the Head of Technical Services provides dynamic and innovative leadership for the evolving areas of acquisitions (both monographic and serial, in all formats) and metadata creation and management in the Marriott Library, the main library of the University of Utah. The HTS directly supervises the managers of the Monographs, Serials, MARC Metada and Digital Collections Metadata units, taking responsibility for the overall operational effectiveness and efficiency of those areas and establishing policies and procedures that anticipate the future directions of the scholarly communication marketplace, the priorities of the University of Utah, and the needs of the Libraries’ patrons. S/he will develop goals, policies, and workflows, foster staff development, and guide the division into an increasingly digital and patron-centered future.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct supervision of four unit managers.
  • Administration of all Technical Services areas including monographic and serial acquisitions (including copy cataloging) and both MARC and non-MARC metadata creation.
  • Participate in oversight and management of the acquisitions budget.
  • Participate as a member of the Marriott Advisory Committee, and on other committees as assigned.
  • Manage and serve as primary contact for the integrated library system.
  • Work with Technical Services staff in the Quinney Law and Eccles Health Sciences libraries to coordinate policies and procedures and enhance consistency and cooperation between the two libraries.
  • Oversee the hiring and training of new personnel as well as recommendations for retention, promotion, and salary raises.
  • Ensure the documentation of policies and procedures of all aspects of the work done in Technical Services.
  • Plan and coordinate departmental meetings and other means of departmental communication.
  • Support and promote the libraries’ initiatives related to scholarly communication.


Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited MLS degree.
  • 5-7 years of experience in one or (preferably) more library technical services areas.
    Significant management experience, preferably including management of multiple departments/divisions.
  • Excellent supervisory, administrative, planning, analytic, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Understanding of technical services issues and workflows.
  • Clear evidence of leadership, communication and collaborative ability.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AACRII, MARC, CONTENTdm and other relevant metadata protocols and systems.

Position: Head – Digital Technologies
General Description:
Reporting to the Associate Director for Information Technology Services, the Head of Digital Technologies manages and advances the Marriott Library’s digitization services. Of particular importance are managing scanning processes to create digital assets, develop and implement digital preservation strategies for the Library, and lead digital initiatives that advance the Library into its digital future. In addition to being responsible for the overall organization and delivering results, he/she works closely with Special Collections and other library divisions to develop digital collections, and with Scholarly Resources and Collections to develop metadata. He/she is also a leader in our regional cooperatives: the Mountain West Digital Library, Western Waters Digital Library, and the Western Soundscape Archive.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage digitization processes and services for the continued development of the Library’s digital collections.
  • Explore, evaluate, and implement new digital technologies.
  • Lead the Library in national-level participation in digital library development.
  • Work closely with other IT divisions to develop digital library services.
    Develop and implement the Library’s digital preservation program.
  • Expand and develop local, state, and regional digitization efforts, with special focus on the regional cooperatives listed above.
  • Effectively manage workflows to insure quality standards are met and products are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Continually evaluate procedures and best practices to create both archival and Web-deliverable versions of digital content.
  • Organize, negotiate, and execute scanning contracts with external clients.
  • Write and/or support grant proposals for digitization projects.
  • Share knowledge and digital developments via meetings and presentations.
  • Hire, train, motivate, and evaluate staff.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Masters in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated success in supervising/leading a department and in implementing innovative technologies.
  • Solid understanding of the current issues and trends related to digital libraries.
  • Experience with digitization processes: scanning equipment, OCR software, metadata creation, digital collection management software, and web delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience in direct customer service, project management, and successful grant writing.
  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and teamwork skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to meet University requirements for tenure.

The University of California, Berkeley seeks an experienced, innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented librarian to manage the international and area studies department, and provide vision and leadership for the Doe/Moffitt Libraries’ collection development infrastructure and initiatives.

Responsibilities
The Head of Research and Collections for International and Area Studies takes a leading role in shaping collections across the Doe/Moffitt Libraries. In partnership with colleagues in the Doe/Moffitt Libraries and the Associate University Librarian/Director of Collections the incumbent plans, evaluates and coordinates Doe/Moffitt Libraries’ collection development activities, policies, and collaborative initiatives. The Head provides vision and guidance to assist selectors in the Doe/Moffitt Libraries who negotiate and manage cooperative collection agreements, advise on preservation decisions, promote digitization projects, and are called upon to pursue extramural funding through grant writing and development activities.
As a significant contribution to supporting current and future research needs of Berkeley faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students across all disciplines, the incumbent collaborates with a broad range of library staff to coordinate the ongoing selection of items from the Gardner (MAIN) Stacks, which houses two million circulating and non-circulating volumes in more than 200 languages, for off-site shelving at the Northern Regional Library Facility which is shared with other UC campuses.

This position manages a department of 15 librarians and library assistants with responsibility for collections, instruction, reference, and academic outreach to international and area studies programs. Staff in this department cultivate and sustain collaborations with academic departments, interdisciplinary programs, institutes, and centers (many receiving US Government Title VI funding) focused on regions including Africa, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Middle East, Near East, South Asia, Southeast Asia and Latin America. These staff also oversee public services and technical services processing for the South/Southeast Asia Library, the Newspapers & Microforms Library, and the Current Periodicals collection. The Head contributes to instruction and reference, and may assume liaison roles and collection development assignments as opportunities arise.
The Head is a member of the senior management team of Doe/Moffitt Libraries -- with the department heads of Circulation Services, Instruction and User Services, Interlibrary Services, and Research and Collections for Humanities and Social Sciences -- and reports directly to the Associate University Librarian for Educational Initiatives and Director of the Doe/Moffitt Libraries. This management team works collaboratively to guide and coordinate the strategic directions, programs, services, facilities, and policies associated with all units in the Doe/Moffitt Libraries. Managers are committed to supporting staff development and fostering an environment of collaboration, creative thinking, and continuous improvement.
UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, and work effectively in a shared decision-making environment. Senior Programmer/Analyst

Dartmouth College Library seeks an experienced programmer/analyst to join the Digital Library Technologies Group, which develops and maintains the technical infrastructure of Dartmouth’s digital library initiatives and services. Proficiency with structured programming languages -- C++ or Java -- and PHP or Perl is required, along with a good grounding in XML.

Candidates must demonstrate superior programming, organization and written communication skills; ability to plan, document and complete projects independently or with a project team; ability to coordinate activities with related units; ability to refine project requirements; and ability to communicate effectively with non-technical staff and end users.

Highly Desirable: Familiarity with SQL and library metadata. Prior experience installing, configuring and maintaining packages such as Apache, Cocoon, and Tomcat on Unix systems. Familiarity with digital object management systems such as CONTENTdm.

Responsibilities

Catalogs serials, electronic resources, and other continuing resources in all formats according to the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (2nd edition, 1998 revision) as interpreted by the Library of Congress, following CONSER guidelines, classified using the LC Classification scheme, and provided subject access using the LC Subject Headings.
Maintains and contributes original CONSER records as part of the LC Program on Cooperative Cataloging.
Creates, as necessary, name authority records according to the MARC21 authority format. As a participant in the LC Program on Cooperative Cataloging, UCB catalogers may contribute original records to the NACO program.
Works collaboratively with Collection Core Services and collection specialists to resolve complex access issues to electronic resources.

Library Director - Great Neck (NY) Library

The Board of Trustees of the Great Neck Library, located on the North Shore of Long Island, New York, seeks a proven administrator and dynamic leader as its next director. Great Neck Library is an association library consisting of a main building and three branch facilities serving an increasingly diverse suburban population of 40,000. With a staff of 150 (92 FTEs) and an annual budget of $8.2 million, the Library loans 700,000+ items a year and offers unique components, valuable resources, and outstanding community programming and services.

Responsibilities. The Director reports to an elected, seven-member Board of Trustees and will collaborate with Board, staff and community to provide leadership in developing and implementing a shared vision for the Library’s service program and facilities. Responsibilities

The Undergraduate Student Programs Librarian partners with library liaisons in RIS and academic departments to integrate advanced research skills into the undergraduate curriculum across disciplines. The Librarian is also appointed liaison to the Honors College and develops instructional programs in support of the curriculum as well as the Summer Undergraduate Honors Research Program and the Summer Freshman Research Institute. He or she will oversee the work of the Cabell Library Undergraduate Advisory Committee. Discovery Metadata Librarian, Stanford University Libraries

This Position is double posted at the 3P1/3P2 levels. The position supports creation, organization, and maintenance of metadata to facilitate discovery and access to library information resources in various formats, using traditional cataloging standards as well as existing and emerging metadata schemas and techniques, and also includes reviewing print materials in Humanities subject area for discovery metadata creation. (The appointment will be made at the Assistant or Associate level, depending on qualifications and experience.)

RESPONSIBILITIES: Creates discovery metadata for Humanities materials applying the metadata schema appropriate to the material as defined by policy. Currently, predominate schema is AACR2 applied according to the BIBCO standards, but others such as Dublin Core applied as needed. Responsible for associated authority work and quality control as defined by policy for particular schemas; participates in the NACO and SACO programs: searches authority files, creates and updates name and series authority records. Collaborates with team members to evaluate, select, and apply metadata schemas and techniques, standards, data elements, and thesauri to provide description and access to SULAIR collections. Actively pursues innovative discovery techniques as they emerge and adapts them to the local environment. May act as project manager or consultant for the creation and management of descriptive and other metadata for selected projects in Metadata Dept. Maintains active link with the curators responsible for Humanities collections; serves as language expert for catalogers and staff in Technical Services. Participates in relevant professional activities. Performs other duties as needed.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Masters degree from an ALA-accredited institution required. Theoretical knowledge of current cataloging procedures and principles as defined in AACR2, the MARC Bibliographic, Holdings, and Authorities formats.) Practical knowledge required for the Associate level.)
Ability to rapidly learn and implement new cataloging procedures and principles adopted by the Department.
Advanced knowledge of one modern Western European language, Spanish preferred; working knowledge of all other modern Western European languages.
Ability to learn, analyze, and utilize existing and emerging metadata standards, such as Dublin Core, EAD, MODS, METS, OAI, TEI, XML, and relevant thesauri or ontologies, as required by special projects. Ability to provide mapping between different metadata standards in a dynamic environment.

High level of proficiency using PC-based applications (Windows, word processing, spreadsheets) and other computer applications (email, Internet, Integrated Library Systems); high level computer competency kept up to date through continuous learning.

Preservation Librarian, Stanford University Libraries

This is a 2 year fixed term position. This position is double posted at the Assistant (3P1)/Associate (3P2) levels.

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Interim Head, Preservation, the Preservation Librarian participates actively in the preservation of Stanford University Library’s collections by providing a broad range of preventive preservation services to the libraries. The incumbent will:

• Develop a written preventive preservation plan for the Archive of Recorded Sound and implement top priority recommendations.
• Update the Collection Emergency Response Manual and, in partnership with the Interim Head, Preservation, design an emergency response plan for Stanford’s high-density preservation storage facility.
• In partnership with the Interim Head, plan and implement a library-wide staff and patron education program including the development of a written training plan and support materials.
• Analyze and interpret environmental data for collection storage areas and work closely with library units and facilities staff to insure the best possible storage conditions for physical collections in all formats.
• Oversee the library’s Integrated Pest Management program; evaluate data; recommend, initiate, and follow-up on remedial actions; collaborate closely with library units and facilities to insure a pest-free environment for collections.
• Contribute preventive preservation content to the Preservation Department’s web site.

Requirements: This fixed two-year term appointment is an entry-level position designed to give the incumbent a broad range of experiences in a large research library. The incumbent—supported by a well-established comprehensive preservation program—will be working in a fast-paced environment where preservation services are valued and supported.

We are seeking a colleague who is passionate about preservation of physical collections in all formats including books, manuscripts, photographic materials, audio recordings, moving image materials, and digital media. The incumbent will have a Master’s degree in Library Science. A demonstrated interest in preservation of library materials as indicated by a combination of relevant coursework and experience is required. Knowledge of preventive preservation principles and strategies is required. Knowledge of how these principles and strategies relate to media materials is desired. Strong written and oral skills are required. An advanced certificate in preservation administration is desired. Knowledge of web design and editing software is desired.

Appointment at the Associate Level rank will be based on breadth of expertise and years of experience.

This is a fixed term position: 24 months from date of hire.

Associate Director of Community Services

JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for the overall management and collection development of the Price Library of Judaica. Responsible for selection of library materials, reference service, research consultations, and bibliographic instruction in support of the Jewish Studies program. Promotes a public awareness of the Price Library of Judaica’s mission and resources and determines needs and priorities to enhance appropriate library support. Collaborates with librarians and the academic faculty to establish collection management policies. Participates in defining public service, technical service, and collection management goals, objectives, strategies, performance criteria, and materials budgets. Assigns, trains, monitors, and evaluates staff assigned to the Price Library of Judaica. Participates in the Library’s publications, fund raising, and bibliographical control programs. The library encourages staff participation in reaching management decisions and, consequently, the head of the Price Library of Judaica may be asked to serve on various departmental and library-wide committees and teams. The incumbent will pursue professional development opportunities, including research, publication, and professional association activities, to meet library-wide criteria for tenure and promotion.


RESPONSIBILITIES:
As the bibliographer for Jewish Studies, maintains and integrates the following responsibilities:
· Maintains contact with the faculty and students utilizing the Price Library of Judaica to ensure that the collections and services provided by the Library support needs. Informs this clientele of relevant library issues.
· Develops collection management policy and approval plans for the Price Library of Judaica. Stays informed of relevant Jewish Studies resources available in other libraries and collections.
· Reviews notification slips, trade and national bibliographies, advertisements, catalogues, and similar sources so as to initiate current and retrospective acquisition orders in all formats enhancing the Judaica collections in support of the academic program. Selects appropriate materials received by gift; reviews approval plan profiles and receipts for Judaica, and advises the Acquisitions and Licensing Dept. on sources of supply.
· Works with the library Gifts and Exchange programs to solicit and review gift collections and to establish exchange programs for Jewish Studies.
· Establishes cataloging and preservation priorities for Judaica materials. Makes storage, transfer, and deselection decisions for Judaica materials.
· Participates in the reformatting and digitization programs to ensure conversion of important items in jeopardy.
· Assists the Cataloging and Metadata Dept. in the copy cataloging of Hebraica and selection of materials for outsourcing of cataloging services.
· Provides consultative services to the faculty and advanced graduate students in Jewish Studies, usually by referral from public service areas or by specific arrangement with the academic program area faculty.
· Develops and maintains a professional relationship with other Judaica bibliographers, providing leadership at the national level in various organizations.
· Participates in the Special and Area Studies Collections departmental strategic planning process.
· Prepares collection assessment studies and defines resource needs.
· Participates in the Library’s development program.
· Participates in the Library’s exhibition program.
· Participates in the Library’s research and publication program.
· Serves on Library and departmental consultative bodies as appropriate.
· Pursues professional development opportunities, including research, publication, and professional association activities, to meet library-wide criteria for tenure and promotion.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
  • Thorough knowledge of one Jewish language and a working knowledge of one additional Jewish language
  • Strong familiarity with Jewish history and culture
  • An ALA accredited MLS degree (or foreign equivalency) or graduate degree in the bibliographic subject area or related field
  • A minimum of three (3) years experience in an academic or research library, with experience in managing and enhancing library collections, including those supporting Jewish Studies or other relevant and equivalent professional experience
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in English
  • Familiarity with information and digital-based technologies and automated library systems
  • Strong potential for meeting the requirements for tenure and promotion.

Preferred:

  • Earned graduate degree in a relevant subject field with a thorough knowledge of the research literature of Jewish Studies
  • A demonstrated record of bibliographic instruction, scholarship, public outreach, and development
  • Working knowledge of two modern European languages
  • Working knowledge of a Semitic language other than Hebrew
  • Experience as a catalog librarian in an automated environment

The Price Library of Judaica is a well-balanced Jewish studies collection of notable depth and scope. Its diversified holdings of uncommon research materials in English and other languages support scholarship in virtually every aspect of the Jewish experience.
