Dean of Libraries

The Dean will be a key member of the academic leadership team as the University continues to serve a diverse student body with high-quality professional and liberal arts programs. Reporting to the Provost, the Dean is responsible for all areas of Library administration, which include strategic planning, policy and program development, resource management, and utilization of emerging technologies. The Dean is also responsible for developing an effective and collaborative team of Library faculty and staff, as well as strong functional relationships with other constituent groups.

The Dean will provide a vision for the future of Eastern’s Libraries, and will foster a work environment that welcomes change and innovation to meet new challenges. Additionally, the Dean will support our commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive community for all its members.

Access Positions

The Washington University Libraries are seeking individuals with a deep commitment to library leadership, innovation, and customer service to lead its two primary Access units (Circulation and ILL/Reserves). Individuals will have an opportunity to develop and improve services in these newly redefined positions.

CIRCULATION LIBRARIAN
Responsibilities: The Circulation Librarian is responsible for providing excellent customer service at the combined circulation and reference service point (Help Desk). The librarian will work closely with the Reference Desk Manager to ensure training is up-to-date and referrals are handled correctly. In addition, the librarian oversees stacks management and retrieval. The position requires mature judgment and supervisory skills, as well as a solid knowledge of unit policies and procedures and the Libraries’ integrated library system. The Circulation Librarian will play a central role in making the Help Desk be more responsive to users’ needs and expectations through the assessment of existing services and implementation of new services. The librarian will also work with the Head of Access and the Technical Specialist in finding ways to use technology to improve customer service and streamline operations at the Help Desk.

Qualifications: MLS degree from an ALA accredited school or equivalent required; demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service; experience with integrated library systems; familiarity with Innovative Interfaces Millennium system desirable; supervisory skills and the ability to coach and lead a team; ability to work effectively in a collegial manner in a changing environment; strong communication skills, oral and written; ability to analyze problems and determine solutions; ability to multi-task; and demonstrated leadership skills.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN AND RESERVES LIBRARIAN
Responsibilities: The Interlibrary Loan and Reserves Librarian oversees the interlibrary lending and borrowing, local and consortial requesting, and course reserves operations. The librarian develops policies, procedures and workflows for the interlibrary loan and reserves operations including copyright compliance. The librarian is responsible for training and supervising staff and student assistants and monitoring operations to ensure greater efficiencies and workload distribution. The Interlibrary Loan and Reserves Librarian will play a central role in finding new ways to be responsive to users’ needs and expectations through the assessment of existing operations and implementation of new services. In particular, the librarian will work closely with the Acquisition staff and subject librarians to find the most effective way to obtain materials for users. The librarian will also work with Head of Access and the Technical Specialist to explore new possibilities for using technology to improve and streamline operations. The supervisor is knowledgeable of a variety of software applications, including but not limited to Millennium, ArticleReach, MOBIUS INN-Reach, ILLiad, and the course management system (Ares).

Job Description: Texas State University-San Marcos invites applications for the position of Director for The Wittliff Collections, Albert B. Alkek Library. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, University Library, the Director will provide overall leadership and management for the Collections primary components: the Southwestern Writers Collection, the Southwestern and Mexican Photography Collection, and other special collections.


Required Qualifications: A Master's degree in a discipline relevant to The Collection's mission; a record of progressively responsible related experience; demonstrated leadership and managerial skills; a capacity for developing and sustaining relationships within the university and with a wide range of external constituencies; a talent and enthusiasm for outreach and fundraising; public speaking and writing abilities; a record of professional activity and the ability to work under pressure. University Librarian

Loyola Marymount University offers librarians a supportive and innovative work environment. The new William H. Hanno Library open in August 2009: http://library.lmu.edu. With a materials budget of $3.8 million, split almost evenly between print and electronic resources, the Acquisitions & Serials Department Head will lead 7 FTE staff in the procurement and management of all collection materials for the William H. Hannon Library. The department acquires 18,000 books annually and subscribes to 1800 print periodicals, 22,300 e-journals and over 200 e-resources. The Head manages the acquisitions, serials, and electronic resources functions of the library, including oversight of expenditures against the library’s materials budgets.

Other position specific accountabilities are as follows: Develop effective utilization of technology to streamline workflow and processes; manage personnel including training and development; establish effective vendor relationships; coordinate budgeting and financial management for library materials funds; and represent LMU at various conferences and meetings pertaining to library acquisitions and technologies.

The ideal candidate must have broad knowledge of current trends in higher education, academic libraries, and the publishing industry, and an understanding of the issues of content ownership vs. access, including e-resource licensing. The successful candidate will be creative, flexible, and collaborative. Other skills and knowledge include: ability to analyze work processes and introduce appropriate technological solutions for efficiency and user convenience; strong financial management skill, and excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to win the trust and confidence of faculty, librarians, and library staff. Experience with these technologies preferred: Innovative Interfaces, Inc., Serials Solutions, and OCLC PromptCat.

A Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited institution is preferred, but a related master’s degree with appropriate experience may be substituted. A minimum of five years of progressively responsible academic library acquisitions and/or serials experience that includes supervision is required.

Hiring Salary: $59,880 to $80,000 commensurate with experience and salary history.

This full-time, 12-month administrative staff position reports to the Head of Research and Reference Services.

The Reference/Web Development Librarian is solely responsible for managing the library’s web site and the custom-created content management system that drives it. S/he provides vision for continued development of the library’s web site by actively exploring web programming and technology trends and assessing their application to and suitability for our library. In consultation with the library’s Electronic Public Interfaces Committee, the Reference/Web Development Librarian sets priorities for site improvements and implements changes. As an active member of the Research and Reference Services department, the Reference/Web Development Librarian provides reference and instruction services for the humanities and social sciences. S/he works at the reference desk, conducts research appointments, plans and teaches information literacy sessions, and develops the library’s collections in assigned disciplines. Some weekend and evening hours are required.
