Williams College, a top-ranked coeducational liberal arts college located in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts, seeks a creative and curious librarian who combines a passion for working with library users with the imagination and programming skills to take the library’s virtual presence to the next level. This full-time, 12-month administrative staff position reports to the Head of Research and Reference Services.
The Reference/Web Development Librarian is solely responsible for managing the library’s web site and the custom-created content management system that drives it. S/he provides vision for continued development of the library’s web site by actively exploring web programming and technology trends and assessing their application to and suitability for our library. In consultation with the library’s Electronic Public Interfaces Committee, the Reference/Web Development Librarian sets priorities for site improvements and implements changes. S/he trains and supports reference and instruction colleagues to be self-sufficient web authors.
As an active member of the Research and Reference Services department, the Reference/Web Development Librarian provides reference and instruction services for the humanities and social sciences. S/he works at the reference desk, conducts research appointments, plans and teaches information literacy sessions, and develops the library’s collections in assigned disciplines. Some weekend and evening hours are required.
The successful candidate will be a dynamic professional, committed to public services and proficient in advanced web programming. It is essential that the Reference/Web Development Librarian be flexible, self-motivated and a strong team player who enjoys both working with the public and developing technology. S/he should be able to handle a wide range of tasks and responsibilities effectively and happily
Williams College Libraries, comprised of Sawyer Library, Schow Science Library, and College Archives & Special Collections, is home to a rich, historic collection of nearly one million volumes selected for undergraduate research in the liberal arts. Requirements:
• ALA-accredited MLS, MLIS or equivalent
• Demonstrated expertise in developing and maintaining dynamic, data-driven web sites, using XHTML, CSS, Javascript (particularly the jQuery and/or scriptaculous libraries), PHP, and SQL (particularly using the MySQL database engine)
• Experience or coursework in reference and instruction services
• Knowledge of emerging web and information technologies and ability to integrate them into existing tools and sites
• Comfort with developing web sites in both Unix and Windows environments
• Demonstrated web site design skills
• Ability to explain and to teach technology to a less- or non-technical audience
• Subject knowledge and demonstrated interest in at least one social sciences or humanities discipline
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
