Head of Access Services

Dean of the Library

The Dean of the Library provides administrative leadership for a system of three campus libraries and eight program areas within the Library.  The Dean reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves on the appropriate academic, technological, and administrative councils. The Dean will provide strategic planning and policy direction in the areas of collection development, public and technical services, facilities planning, and personnel policy, and is responsible for the coordination of the branch campus libraries in conjunction with the managers of those libraries.

The ideal candidate will have, as a minimum, a graduate degree in librarianship from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program.  A Ph.D. or other doctoral level degree is preferred.  Academic and professional credentials should include an outstanding record of achievement sufficient for appointment as a full professor with tenure within the candidate's discipline.  Minimum work qualifications for the position require a significant amount of administrative leadership experience.  It is preferred that candidates have a minimum of 7-10 years of broad-based library experience with at least 5-7 years in a supervisory or management role within an academic library.  Experience in academic administration, budget management, personnel management, and strategic planning is expected.  Applicants must demonstrate the potential to engage in effective fundraising.

York University Libraries seeks a motivated and service-oriented librarian to serve as a member of the Peter F. Bronfman Business Library and to provide reference and research assistance, instruction, collections and liaison services related to business teaching and research at York University, with special responsibilities in the areas of outreach and elearning.

York University Libraries consist of a large central library and three branch libraries, one of which is the Peter F. Bronfman Business Library. York’s collections have over six million items, including 2.5 million print volumes, over 60,000 electronic journals and most major online business resources.

The Peter F. Bronfman Business Library, located in the award-winning Seymour Schulich Building, provides facilities, resources, and reference, research and instructional services to the business programs of York University, including those of the highly ranked Schulich School of Business.  A comprehensive collection of print, electronic and data resources support
research in business and economics.  Four full-time librarians and five full-time support staff are currently based in the Bronfman Library. 

The successful candidate will participate in teaching, reference, collection and liaison activities in the Libraries and elsewhere on York campuses, and in the development of new programs and services. This librarian will assist business students in developing the skills required to locate, evaluate, and use resources effectively, and will also support faculty research. The librarian will maintain liaison with faculty and undertake collection development activities for designated business subjects.  The librarian will provide instruction support for business subjects. The successful candidate will participate in the shared decision-making of the Peter F. Bronfman Business Library and on collegial committees of the Libraries and of the University. He/she will have a lead role in creating a vibrant and engaging online library experience, through initiatives such as elearning projects and integrating social media into outreach for business students and faculty. The librarian will implement assessment practices into new and existing services. He/she will be expected to work regular evening and weekend shifts.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
• An ALA accredited MLS or equivalent
• Background in business or economics
and/or relevant expertise in business librarianship   
• Commitment to customer service and excellent oral and written skills required
• Demonstrated understanding of the concepts, goals, and methods of information literacy instruction and ability to teach in a variety of settings and formats, including elearning and related technologies
• Demonstrated ability in providing business reference service in an academic or special library
• Broad knowledge of business print materials and digital information sources                   
• Understanding of emerging technological trends
• Evidence of web skills and experience with using social media
• Interest in collections development on business-related subjects 
• Evidence of professional initiative and flexibility
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collegial setting
• Ability to work with a large and diverse clientele
• Knowledge of assessment methodology and tools
• Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse workload
• Willingness to undertake library and university committee responsibilities, professional development, research and scholarship

This is a three year contractually-limited appointment with the designation of Adjunct Librarian and appropriate for a librarian with up to four years post-MLS experience. Librarians at York University have academic status and are members of the York University Faculty Association bargaining unit (http://www.yufa.org/). Salary is commensurate with qualifications. The position is available from April 1st, 2012.  All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

Responsibilities: Primary responsibility for all aspects of Special Collections. Also responsible for providing general reference service on a regular schedule including evenings and weekends.  Serves as library coordinator to the History Department for the purposes of collection development, instruction and specialized reference. Additional responsibilities include pursuing scholarly activities and service to the department, college, university, and the profession.

Required Qualifications:
§  Masters degree from an ALA or equivalently accredited program in librarianship.
§  A minimum of two years experience in special collections in an academic library or research institution. 
§  A minimum of two years experience providing general academic reference and instruction services.
§  Familiarity with MARC-AMC cataloging and archival coding.
§  Demonstrated understanding of key issues and emerging trends and technologies in special collections.
§  Proven ability to work collaboratively to develop programs and exhibitions.
§  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
§  Evidence of participation in professional development activities. 

Preferred Qualifications: Certification or special training in archives or rare books; second graduate degree in a relevant discipline; evidence of success in fundraising or obtaining grants.

Finalists must successfully complete an interview process and a teaching demonstration.
