Data Services Librarian

Position and Responsibilities:
Georgia State University Library seeks a recent MLS graduate or early career professional to serve as a Data Services Librarian to select, acquire and deliver statistical data in support of research and teaching. The successful candidate will be a collegial, innovative librarian who will be a resource specialist for data in the social sciences, GIS, and government information. The Data Services Librarian will also develop collections and support research and teaching for the Department of Criminal Justice.

Reporting to the Head of Liaison & Outreach Services, the successful candidate will build collections and provide access to social sciences statistical data collections and government document data sets, including U.S. Bureau of the Census. The Data Services Librarian will be responsible for identifying, locating, selecting, acquiring and providing access to data sets. He/she will work closely with colleagues inside and outside of the library to insure numeric data and government information is fully accessible to users. This includes conducting training sessions for librarians, students and faculty in the identification and effective use of data sets in the social sciences and other related disciplines. He/she will serve as primary liaison to ICPSR.

The successful candidate will also provide research assistance and instruction to students and faculty in the Department of Criminal Justice, including delivering quality, in-depth reference and consultation services and collection development. He/she will promote the library and information literacy in the discipline and foster communication between the department and the library.

Digital Services Librarian (Tenure Track)

Rollins College is looking for a service-oriented librarian eager to help shape a dynamic, forward-looking liberal arts college library through the ongoing implementation and support of digital resources, services, and systems with primary responsibility for the development of the SirsiDynix Symphony ILS. This is a tenure track faculty position; the successful candidate is expected to be appointed as an assistant professor, although previous experience and qualifications may be taken into account in determining initial rank.

Under the direction of the Head of Digital Services & Systems, the Digital Services Librarian will work with the Digital Services & Systems department and the rest of the library to plan, implement, integrate, and maintain digital systems including the SirsiDynix Symphony ILS, the Serials Solutions Knowledge base, and 360 Suite, the library’s web presence, EZProxy, ILLiad, RefWorks, ContentDM, and a number of third-party vendor online resources. The successful candidate will also assist library users, faculty, and staff in the use of the library’s digital systems and, like all full time librarians at Rollins, will participate in reference service, instruction, and liaison with academic departments.


· MLS from an ALA-accredited library school and systems, automation or digitization experience are required.

· Preferred qualifications include experience with the administration of Integrated Library Systems, ideally Sirsi; experience designing and maintaining web pages; working knowledge of Solaris/Unix, HTML, XML, CSS, Java, Javascript, and/or PHP.

· Experience with electronic resource management systems, digital library implementations, Blackboard or similar course management systems, and/or graphic design for the Web.

Digital Initiatives Metadata Librarian /Library Assistant Professor

The University of Vermont Libraries’ Center for Digital Initiatives (CDI, seeks a detail-oriented, innovative, and energetic librarian for the position of Digital Initiatives Metadata Librarian. The Institute for Museum and Library Services has recently awarded the University of Vermont a 24-month grant to continue development of the Libraries’ digital initiatives. · Works with colleagues in department to ensure proper storage and handling of audio/visual materials

· Seeks out and applies for external funding to pursue preservation and access projects for audio/visual materials
· Manages Oral History Collection. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

o coordinating continued development and maintenance of the New South Voices oral history database and general web pages for the Oral History Collection and for other collections as assigned, working closely with the library webmaster and the digital services librarian;

o advising individuals outside the department on all aspects of developing and managing oral history projects and on technical details involving equipment, etc.
o supervising part-time workers.
· Actively promotes use of all the department’s collections by seeking out university faculty and students, historic site and museum personnel, and members of the scholarly community and general public who could benefit from the department’s services.
· Provides instructional classes on campus and makes presentations to non-university groups, incorporating the advantages of technology with traditional techniques.
· Prepares displays, including exhibits on the Web.
· Shares responsibility for reference service in Special Collections on a more or less equal basis with other department faculty and staff.

Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association or other relevant master’s degree required
One to three years of professional level experience, in special collections departments in libraries or archives, or equivalent combination of specialized training through formal education and internships.

· Demonstrable experience working with film, video, photographic, and/or audio materials
· Demonstrable experience with digital video and audio equipment, files and formats, compression codecs, and web delivery
· Demonstrable experience in the application of metadata standards such as Dublin Core, AACR2/MARC, TEI, or EAD
· Demonstrable experience in the design and creation of web pages
· Demonstrable experience with digitization issues, processes, and techniques.
· Demonstrable experience in organizing materials, establishing intellectual control, and providing access through the use of appropriate standards in information technology.

Beginning Fall 2009, the Towson University Residency Librarian Program will offer an early-career librarian the opportunity for rapid professional growth in academic librarianship. The two-year program is designed to provide a broad introduction to academic librarianship, a supportive environment for professional exploration, and an opportunity for concentrated experience in an area of specialization. The purpose of the program is to help increase the presence of underrepresented groups in academic librarianship. Position Description:

The Residency Librarian will be provided with a wide range of academic librarian experiences to develop and enhance their professional skills and prepare for future career opportunities. Library administrators, faculty, and staff will serve as formal and informal mentors and will help the Resident acclimate to the library, university and Greater Baltimore metro area.

In year one of this two-year residency, the Residency Librarian will gain meaningful work experience within three library departments:

  • Research, Reference, and Instructional Services
  • Technical Services – Collection Development, Acquisitions, Cataloging, and Serials

The Resident will be involved in library and university committees, develop collegial relationships with faculty outside the library, and participate in professional organizations.

A goal of this project is for the Resident, working independently or with a mentor, to develop, complete and report research to be presented at a professional conference or in a professional journal.

The Residency Librarian will be appointed for a two-year term with non-tenure track visiting faculty status. Salary is commensurate with that of an entry-level professional librarian. Due to the retirement of the current Director, the Capital Area District Library, headquartered in Lansing, MI is searching for a skilled administrator to serve as Library Director. The Board of Trustees seeks a seasoned executive with a proven track record of success and the energy and vision to take the library system to the next level of growth and service. Located in Michigan’s capital city, the Capital Area District Library serves a population of over 250,000. The staff of 262 includes 48 individuals with master degrees. The main library, 12 branches and bookmobile have a total budget of $12.4 million.

Librarian of the College

The Librarian of the College is the chief administrator of the Amherst College Library, which encompasses the Robert Frost Library with its Archives and Special Collections, the Harry Keefe Science Library, the Vincent Morgan Music Library, the Olds Mathematics Library, the Center for Visual Resources, and the Amherst College Library Depository. The Librarian supervises 17 FTE trustee-appointed librarians and archivists and 24 FTE library support staff and manages a budget of approximately $6 million. The Librarian reports directly to the Dean of the Faculty, Amherst College’s chief academic officer. Although not under the Librarian’s supervision, the Amherst Center for Russian Culture, the Emily Dickinson Museum (both in Amherst) and the Folger Shakespeare Library (in Washington, DC) also operate under the College’s auspices. The Librarian also has a close working relationship with the College’s Director of Information Technology and the Director of the Mead Art Museum.

Candidates should be accomplished professionals with at least seven years of successful administrative experience, including significant management and supervisory responsibilities, in an academic library. This is a three-year appointment with possibility for extension.

The University of California, Berkeley is seeking a librarian with a scientific background and degree in chemistry or a closely related discipline who is interested in developing an informatics-based (cheminformatics/bioinformatics) instructional program for students and faculty as well as serve as a liaison to a select group of interdisciplinary science and engineering research staff.

This person will be a member of the Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Library, but will also participate in the provision of reference service to the broader UC Berkeley science and engineering community as well as develop and teach relevant course-related and drop-in instructional classes. As liaison, he/she will work closely with a select group of research staff at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBL), an affiliated organization that has contracted with The Library for information services. This person will also have collection development and public service responsibilities for this group of researchers including reference work at the LBL information service point.

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in Library-wide planning and governance, to work effectively in a shared decision-making environment and to be active professionally. In order to advance in the Librarian series, the successful candidate is expected to show evidence of professional growth and contributions beyond the primary assignment.

-Develop and teach educational programs related to the selection and use of information resources, in particular, cheminformatics/bioinformatics resources, for students and researchers in a multidisciplinary science and engineering environment including structural and chemical biology, life sciences, materials science, physics, biochemical engineering and biotechnology.
-Serve as a liaison to a select group of researchers connected with LBL with a broad multidisciplinary subject range including life sciences, chemical sciences, environmental sciences, physics and engineering.
-Collaborate with science and engineering librarians regarding educational programs, digital library services and collection development.
-Share responsibility for reference services including electronic reference and individual consultations.
-Maintain current awareness of newly developed databases and resources and develop innovative approaches to disseminating this information.


-MLS from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent degree.
-Understanding of and skill in the use and manipulation of cheminformatics/bioinformatics resources, software and search engines.
-Demonstrated aptitude for teaching and developing user-oriented documentation.

Associate Director

The Monroe County Public Library enjoys strong community support and was included in national rankings by both HAPLR and LJ indexes in the last year.
