Residency Librarian Program

2009-2011

Beginning Fall 2009, the Towson University Residency Librarian Program will offer an early-career librarian the opportunity for rapid professional growth in academic librarianship. The two-year program is designed to provide a broad introduction to academic librarianship, a supportive environment for professional exploration, and an opportunity for concentrated experience in an area of specialization. The purpose of the program is to help increase the presence of underrepresented groups in academic librarianship. Towson University values diversity and encourages all qualified individuals to apply.

Position Description:

The Residency Librarian will be provided with a wide range of academic librarian experiences to develop and enhance their professional skills and prepare for future career opportunities. Library administrators, faculty, and staff will serve as formal and informal mentors and will help the Resident acclimate to the library, university and Greater Baltimore metro area.

In year one of this two-year residency, the Residency Librarian will gain meaningful work experience within three library departments:

  • Research, Reference, and Instructional Services
  • Technical Services – Collection Development, Acquisitions, Cataloging, and Serials
  • Archives and Digital Collections

The Resident will be involved in library and university committees, develop collegial relationships with faculty outside the library, and participate in professional organizations.

In the second year, the Residency Librarian will work with his or her supervisor and mentor to identify a capstone project that is tailored to his or her professional interests and to the needs of the library. A goal of this project is for the Resident, working independently or with a mentor, to develop, complete and report research to be presented at a professional conference or in a professional journal.

The Residency Librarian will be appointed for a two-year term with non-tenure track visiting faculty status. Salary is commensurate with that of an entry-level professional librarian. Full benefits package is provided with health insurance and retirement options, relocation allowance, and financial support for professional development. This position is contingent on the availability of funds at the time of hire.

Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited institution, preferably granted between January 2008 and August 2009. Strong interest in developing a career in academic librarianship; demonstrated commitment to public service and user satisfaction; excellent communication and presentation skills; strong, positive interpersonal skills; enthusiasm for learning new technologies; commitment to professional growth; and ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues and patrons from diverse backgrounds.
