Tufts University invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Tisch Library.

Located on Tufts’ Medford campus, about seven miles from Boston, the Tisch Library serves as the University’s central library in the arts and sciences and in engineering.  Physically expanded in 1996, the Library is a central and lively feature of the campus, serving not only Tufts’ undergraduate population of 5,000 but also 1630 graduate students and 780 full and part time faculty in the arts and sciences and engineering.  The Library effects a remarkably efficient use of resources, with 900,000 volumes of the 1.2 million held by the Tufts system.  E-journal licenses for the system number 38,464.  The Library serves both the teaching and research needs of the faculty and students, who report high satisfaction with library services. The Library employs 56 staff and has an annual operating budget of over $11 million.

Reporting to the Executive Administrative Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Director will also have working ties with the new Dean of Arts and Sciences and the Dean of Engineering.  The Director will assume the leadership of a vital and essential institution at a time of unprecedented change in the acquisition, dissemination, and preservation of knowledge. He or she will develop and implement a shared vision for the Library in support of the University’s plans; build a strong and effective leadership team within the Library; strengthen communication and information flow between the Library and its constituents; and manage the Library’s operations strategically during a time of constrained but stable resources.

Successful candidates will bring: an understanding of the major challenges facing academic libraries; the capacity to collaborate and communicate with constituencies of faculty, students, and staff; a successful history of staff development and team building; the capacity to understand and support scholarly research; an awareness of current trends in scholarly publication; the ability to manage a complex physical and virtual environment to deliver information services and preserve information; a willingness to seek out and obtain resources for the development of the Library; and the ability to balance support of the Library’s traditional collections and services with the development of new strategies to support scholarship, teaching, and learning.  The position requires at least ten years of experience in supporting teaching and research in a complex academic environment and a history of progressively more responsible positions in library administration, along with an advanced degree in library science or its equivalent.

Senior Community Library Manager


SENIOR COMMUNITY LIBRARY MANAGER
Contra Costa County Library
Monthly Salary Range: $5,524 - $7,055

Contra Costa County Library in Northern California seeks to fill two (2) full time Senior Community Library Manager positions in Pinole/El Sobrante, California and Brentwood, California. 

Contra Costa County operates 25 community libraries within a 750 square mile area and serves approximately 900,000 urban, suburban, and rural customers with an annual circulation exceeding 5 million.

Incumbents are responsible for day-to-day administration and operation of a community library. This includes responsibility for the supervision of subordinate personnel; development of material collections appropriate for the community served by the library; development and implementation of a plan of service; recommendations to County Library Administration regarding community needs and improvements in library service patterns; and the establishment and maintenance of direct liaison between the community library, city, school district, Library Friends, and local groups to encourage good community relations.

The employment list established from this examination may remain in effect for six (6) months.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

·    License Required: Possession of a Valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
·    Education: Possession of a Master of Library Science degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association, or equivalent curriculum.
·    Experience: Three (3) years of full-time equivalent professional/supervisory library experience, which must have included experience as a Community/Branch Library Manager in a public library.
OR
Four (4) years full-time equivalent experience working in a library, which may include two (2) years as support staff, technician or paraprofessional, and at least two (2) years in a professional/supervisory level.

Assistant/Associate Professor


Position Summary: Teach two graduate classes each semester, online or face-to-face, in library and information studies; conduct research in the field and disseminate information through publication and presentation; provide service to School, College, University, and the discipline and profession. 
Minimum & Preferred Qualifications: The successful candidate will have considerable opportunity to shape the character and direction of the School as it continues to integrate the traditions of librarianship with new technologies. He or she will be actively engaged in research, have an interdisciplinary approach to teaching graduate students, be committed to teach some Web-based synchronous distance education classes, possess the ability to work with multiple constituencies, be able to teach in the SLIS core curriculum, and possess an earned doctorate. Work history in a library or another information environment and related experiences are desirable.

Required: Earned doctorate in library & information science or a related field OR an earned doctorate in a cognate discipline PLUS a masters in librarianship, information studies, or in an information rich environment is desirable.

Applicants with expertise in one or more of the following areas are of particular interest:
o Information sources and services, including sources and services in specialized areas (government documents, business, etc.), information literacy programming, and readers' advisory
o Practice and management of digital and material culture in areas such as preservation and conservation, special collections, and digitization
o Specific library environments such as public, academic, health, special, and information centers.

The School, with 15 faculty members, offers an ALA-accredited Master's program, an MFA program in the book arts, doctoral courses that contribute to a multidisciplinary doctorate in Communication and Information Sciences, and undergraduate courses in Information Science. The School is selective in admissions for all program options, and the MLIS program ranks among the top 25 programs in North America.

SLIS faculty research interests include digital libraries; information retrieval; human-computer interaction; user interface design; video retrieval; history of small presses and related publishing; documentary editing and history of collections; electronic publishing; culturally diverse populations; education for library and information studies; analysis of large data sets; bibliometrics; library history; scholarly communication; institutional repositories; project management; corporate culture in academic library management; social conception of knowledge through cultural evolution; k-12 education policy; role of classification for collaborative organization of web resources; health librarianship and informatics; and social disconnects in information technology, access, and design. Creative activities focus on collaboration between letterpress printer, author, artist, and hand bookbinder; and materials and techniques of historic bookbinding structures.

Reports to:  Dean of Libraries

Marquette University Libraries seek a dynamic and service-oriented librarian for the position of Associate Dean for Scholarly Resources and Collections with responsibilities for administering print and digital resources for Raynor Memorial Libraries and managing collection and information resources policy development; leads and informs the Libraries and academic departments on issues and trends in scholarly communication; develops strategic direction for collections with the Libraries’ Leadership Council; fosters effective working relationships with library and academic department colleagues, enhances and assesses service quality related to print and digital collections; maintains a significant role in library-wide planning initiatives. 

Specific responsibilities include
·         Leading twenty subject liaisons in collection development activities, designing work processes and services that support research and scholarship
·         Monitoring and evaluating trends and developments relevant to academic libraries, particularly in the areas of information resources and scholarly communication
·         Coordinating preparation and allocation of the Libraries’ collection budget of approximately $7 million  
·         Providing oversight of the Libraries’ digital projects and the Libraries’ institutional repository, including supervision of the Digital Projects Unit  
·         Initiating library and campus discussions on information resource and development in light of changes in scholarly communication in consultation and collaboration with the Dean of Libraries
·         Working with vendors and the University’s General Counsel Office on negotiating new and existing licenses for electronic resources;
·         Representing the Libraries at the local, regional, and national arenas as appropriate;
·         Serving as a member of the Libraries’ senior administrative team and contributing to strategic planning, program development and evaluation, budget formulation, and allocation of resources in support in support of the Libraries’ mission, particularly as related to collections and information resources.

Qualifications:  Significant experience with or knowledge of collections, information resources, institutional repositories; at least five years of increasingly responsible experience in an academic or research library, including at least three years in an administrative capacity; demonstrated knowledge of trends in scholarly communication, the open access movement, and collection and information resource development; demonstrated leadership to effect change in a challenging and complex information environment, with vision, creativity and innovation; management style that is inclusive and empowers others; effective supervisory experience; demonstrated initiative in program development; strong analytical and decision-making skills; excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills; and experience in  planning; demonstrated commitment to diversity; demonstrated record of professional involvement at the regional and national level; Master’s degree in library /information science from an ALA accredited program.   The Associate Dean must meet the requirements for appointment at the full librarian rank.
