The J. Willard Marriott Library has new librarian leadership opportunities as a result of the implementation of an innovative organizational restructuring and the completion of a $90 million, state of the art library renovation. We are moving quickly to new models of service and leadership. This position offers the opportunity to be a part of our transforming library.

Position: Head – Digital Technologies
General Description:
Reporting to the Associate Director for Information Technology Services, the Head of Digital Technologies manages and advances the Marriott Library’s digitization services. Of particular importance are managing scanning processes to create digital assets, develop and implement digital preservation strategies for the Library, and lead digital initiatives that advance the Library into its digital future. In addition to being responsible for the overall organization and delivering results, he/she works closely with Special Collections and other library divisions to develop digital collections, and with Scholarly Resources and Collections to develop metadata. He/she is also a leader in our regional cooperatives: the Mountain West Digital Library, Western Waters Digital Library, and the Western Soundscape Archive.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage digitization processes and services for the continued development of the Library’s digital collections.
  • Explore, evaluate, and implement new digital technologies.
  • Lead the Library in national-level participation in digital library development.
  • Work closely with other IT divisions to develop digital library services.
    Develop and implement the Library’s digital preservation program.
  • Expand and develop local, state, and regional digitization efforts, with special focus on the regional cooperatives listed above.
  • Effectively manage workflows to insure quality standards are met and products are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Continually evaluate procedures and best practices to create both archival and Web-deliverable versions of digital content.
  • Organize, negotiate, and execute scanning contracts with external clients.
  • Write and/or support grant proposals for digitization projects.
  • Share knowledge and digital developments via meetings and presentations.
  • Hire, train, motivate, and evaluate staff.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Masters in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated success in supervising/leading a department and in implementing innovative technologies.
  • Solid understanding of the current issues and trends related to digital libraries.
  • Experience with digitization processes: scanning equipment, OCR software, metadata creation, digital collection management software, and web delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience in direct customer service, project management, and successful grant writing.
  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and teamwork skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to meet University requirements for tenure.

Preferred:

  • Experience at the University of Utah, within academia, or an academic library.
  • Experience with CONTENTdm digital asset management software, ABBYY Fine Reader, Photoshop and other Adobe products.

Salary and Benefits: Head of Digital Technologies $60,000. Excellent benefits including TIAA-CREF (14.2 University contribution) medical, dental, 25 days of annual vacation, 12 days sick leave, eligibility for sabbatical and professional development time.
