Collection Development Librarian - Millar Library

The Collection Development Librarian provides work related to the selection, processing, evaluation, and assessment of library resources; assists in the development and implementation of collection development policies and procedures; and performs some reference, liaison, and instructional duties. This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position with the rank of Assistant Professor in the Resource Services and Technology (RST) unit. This position is expected to work very closely with the Associate University Librarian, to whom the position reports, as well as to collaborate with the Head of Acquisitions, the Head of Electronic and Continuing Resources, and subject liaison librarians. The incumbent contributes to the profession through professional service and scholarly activities, and participates in faculty governance activities within the Library and University.

Specific Responsibilities

• Provide leadership for and participate in collection management activities across the Library including the selection, assessment, de-selection, and dispersal of collections.
• Participate in the development and review of collection development policies and funding models, and monitor their effectiveness.
• Lead the Library’s Information Resources Management Council (IRMC) in order to coordinate the work of the subject liaison librarians in their efforts to develop collections for academic priorities and curricula.
• Assist with managing and monitoring the Library’s collections budget.
• Play a key role in analyzing and reporting on the funding, use, and assessment of library resources, including the assessment of quality and suitability of the collection when required for program or course proposals. This involves reviewing collection key indicators, analyzing pertinent statistical and other data, and preparing regular reports, as well as reports for special projects.
• Provide assistance to subject liaison librarians related to the use of vendors’ collection management systems.
• Participate in cooperative collection development activities with Oregon University System institutions, the Orbis Cascade Alliance, and other groups, as assigned.
• Coordinate and perform work related to the development and ongoing management of the general collection, including making recommendations on the arrangement, location, and accessibility of collections.
• Participate in providing some reference services on a scheduled basis.
• Serve as subject liaison to one or more small academic departments, as assigned. This would include providing some user instruction as part of the Library’s instruction program.
• Participate in marketing and outreach efforts by contributing content to the Library’s Web sites, blogs, and electronic publications.
• Adhere to University and Library policies and procedures, including Portland State University’s Professional Standards of Conduct (http://www.pdx.edu/hr/professional-standards-conduct).
• Participate in the establishment of short- and long-range goals, objectives, and priorities, aligned with those of the Library and the University.
• Participate in promoting and providing visibility for a positive, responsive image of the Library and its services to the University community and the community at large.
• Communicate openly and professionally with staff, colleagues, and with Library administration.
• Maintain current expertise through participation in workshops, classes, professional associations and networks, and through continued awareness of the scholarly literature.
• Pursue active publication and research agenda in accordance with the Library and University’s promotion, tenure, and post-tenure review guidelines.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

• MLS from an ALA-accredited library and information science program.
• Minimum of three years of professional experience working in collections or acquisitions services in an academic library.
• Thorough knowledge of collection development and management strategies, and familiarity with emerging trends with collection selection tools and processes.
• Significant experience with collection evaluation and assessment, including data collection and analysis, and advanced skills in using a variety of software, including spreadsheets and databases.
• Demonstrated experience with vendor services.
• Demonstrated project management experience.
• Experience with budget projections and allocations, and development of collection development-related reports.

Cataloging and Metadata Librarian

The University Library seeks a collegial, committed, and energetic librarian to provide leadership and guidance in developing, delivering, maintaining and assessing the library’s cataloging and metadata services.

The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian coordinates the cataloging of library materials, regardless of format, including monographs, continuing resources, media, maps, ETDs and special collections. The successful candidate will supervise, train and evaluate staff in cataloging, database maintenance and non-MARC metadata creation; work closely with staff to evaluate and document policies, procedures and efficient workflows within the department; and, work with Digital Library Services and other departments to establish relevant metadata policies, procedures and workflows for digital projects. As a faculty member, the cataloging and metadata librarian will perform administrative duties and participate in university and professional activities, including research, publication, planning and decision making processes for the department and library.

The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian reports to the Head Technical Services and supervises two Library Technical Assistants in the Cataloging Unit.

Manager of Library Technologies

The Manager of Library Technologies at the Portland State University Library provides a key role in the leadership of the Library’s information technology infrastructure and services, including supervision of the Library Technologies team’s activities and staff. This position oversees library technology projects and systems, and works with system vendors, programmers, librarians, staff, and public end-users to develop, evaluate, implement, and support a variety of systems. Services and systems currently include: the Library’s integrated library system (Innovative Interfaces’ Millennium system), the Library’s multiple Web sites, servers, and interfaces; major applications for interlibrary loan and course reserves operations, the PSU digital repository, instructional technology, and provision of staff and public computing. Specific Responsibilities

• Manage the Library Technologies team of four staff and two students. Plan, coordinate, and evaluate daily operations of the team’s activities, projects, and staff so as to provide timely, professional, and consistent library service.
o Supervise, hire, train, and evaluate Library Technologies team members, as necessary, maintaining established unit performance standards and providing conflict resolution when necessary.
o Act as advocate of unit staff and be committed to staff development and staff participation in unit planning and decision making; promote high staff performance through teamwork, job training and enrichment, encouragement of innovation and recognition for achievement.
o Manage technology-related vendor relations, including selection and performance evaluation.
o Coordinate unit activities with those of other Library units.
• Lead the Integrated Library System (ILS) team and attend other functional subgroups’ meetings as necessary; provide oversight and management of technical support and coordination for ILS-related issues and functions. • Participate in the continual evaluation of the technologies being provided in the Portland State Library, making suggestions for service enhancements, greater efficiency, or cost containment; collect and analyze management data for patterns and trends that suggest a need for change, or positioning for the future; and prepare reports on activities, problems, challenges, and accomplishments of acquisitions and preservation.
• Ensure that the short- and long-range planning processes for Library Technologies are anticipatory, rather than reactive, and that they provide an effective means to meet the Library’s mission and priorities. Evaluate alternatives in terms of cost effectiveness, quality of services, and larger institutional priorities.
• Participate in leadership within the Resource Services & Technology (RST) unit through participation in the Coordinating Team (C-Team), which helps to advise the Associate UL in the development of unit-wide policies and guidelines. • Coordinate communication concerning library technologies-related issues, services, policies, and procedures with library staff, users, academic units served, and external partners.
• Participate in promoting and providing visibility for a positive, responsive image of the Library and its services to the University community and the community at large.

• B.A. or B.S., preferably in a related field.

Head of Arts and Archives

Data Management Librarian

American University Library invites applications for a multi-year non tenure track contract Data Management Librarian position at the rank of Assistant Librarian, beginning Fall 2010, subject to budgetary authorization.

GIS and Map Librarian

The candidate will lead in the teaching, reference, collection and liaison activities for geospatial and map resources. A priority for the library is working with faculty to integrate library GIS data resources and maps into the curriculum. The librarian will have special responsibility for the Department of Geography collection, liaison, and, information literacy activities at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate will provide research and teaching support in the use of map resources and geospatial and non-geospatial data to researchers across the disciplines including social science, humanities, science and engineering. The GIS and Map Librarian will liaise with the broader geospatial community: campus, provincial, national and international. The candidate will work closely with the York Data Librarian.

The position includes the management of the Map Library, its services and collections. The incumbent will inspire and foster innovation in the delivery of frontline and virtual service to the user community, and will provide leadership in developing optimal access to geospatial and map resources. The incumbent will supervise staff in the Map Library, prepare annual budgets and other reports, and advise on processing print and electronic materials including metadata standards for digital resources and cartographic materials.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

Libraries are at the center of a vitally important public debate over the extent to which the promise of information technology will be realized. Decisions over the next several years will determine whether people can find and make use of scholarly and cultural works as well as whether we can preserve these works for future generations. The University of Michigan Library has launched a number of major initiatives to improve both immediate and long-term access to information, initiatives that will have a transformative effect on research and scholarship.

The University and the University Library are seeking a dynamic, innovative, and service-oriented individual for the position of Copyright Specialist. Reporting to the Lead Copyright Officer, the successful candidate will assist in the development of guidance, policy, and advocacy on copyright issues to the University and Library communities. This may include contributing to guidance on the copyright aspects of the Library’s scholarly communications and digital collections initiatives, on copyright use in classroom teaching and technology, online courses, distance education, and electronic course reserves, and providing and helping to develop regular educational workshops for the campus community. The Copyright Specialist will help to support efforts to re-conceive the academic research library as a key partner in new modes of scholarly communication. Reporting to the Lead Copyright Officer, the Copyright Specialist is a full-time position (1.0 FTE) for a period of two years. The ideal candidate will work closely with the Lead Copyright Officer to develop services and programs for the UM community. This is an entry-level librarian position and rank is anticipated at the Assistant Librarian level.

The Copyright Specialist will help develop copyright policy for the Library and work closely with a number of important UM Library collections and scholarly communication initiatives, including the Library’s ongoing partnership with Google Book Search, the Hathi Trust Digital Library (http://hathitrust.org), Deep Blue (the UM institutional repository, http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu), the Scholarly Publishing Office (http://www.lib.umich.edu/spo), the Copyright Review Management System (CRMS), to identify works whose copyrights have expired so their digital facsimiles can be made publicly available, and natural language processing initiatives.
The Copyright Specialist will help develop and present workshops, websites, consultations, etc., intended to help members of the campus community to understand and apply both fair use and other principles of copyright, as well as the process to obtain permission to use others’ works, when necessary.

Responsibilities:
This two-year appointment will support strategic planning and identify key areas for strategic initiatives related to copyright matters and scholarly publishing for the Library. The Copyright Specialist will work across the Library and other University departments, as well as with colleagues at other institutions, to articulate concerns, survey the field, and engage the University of Michigan Library community in a consultative process.
Some specific areas for examination include but are not limited to:
-copyright and copyright metadata as they relate to technical services, digital preservation, and HathiTrust;
-encourage use of Creative Commons licenses to facilitate scholarly communication and public engagement;
-serve as dedicated liaison/oversight/coordination with CRMS (Copyright Review Management System) activity and practice; participate in development of next phase of CRMS activity including data collection, education and consultation on different classes of copyright matters; create plan for more active permissions seeking from authors and/or finding copyright holders of ‘orphan works’.

45% Research and Writing – prepare initial discussion papers for internal and/or external conversation and evaluation that identify key issues such as those above and serve as point of departure for examining the issues and possible approaches. Lead preparation of research/white papers with teams of relevant colleagues to state issues, findings, options and/or recommendations with resources and relevant supporting material. Work with Copyright Officer and other designated staff to write strategic papers for publication in variety of venues. Monitor issues in copyright, changes and trends in law domestic and international, evolving practices and research. Prepare briefing materials. Assist with and advise on the development of policy for Library processes related to copyright in light of research. Assist in researching and writing articles, web-based, and materials in other formats for both professional and general audiences on copyright matters.

45% Outreach and Engagement with Library Staff/Profession – Primary: plan, manage and conduct meetings, roundtables, other goal-oriented discussions with stakeholders at the Library. These discussions are guided by the initial discussion papers and will subsequently shape the white papers. Secondary: May assist with general consultations, e.g., screen and answer questions from students, faculty, and staff from across the University and Library on copyright matters. Provide practical guidance. Provide assistance to faculty and members of the University community in publication matters, deposit in Deep Blue, copyright issues related to CTools and other matters of scholarly communication. Encourage respect for copyright law, promote responsible use of copyrighted works, and bolster lawful uses. As appropriate, consultations include information on the options provided by open access, fair use, use of Creative Commons licenses to foster the creation of content that is open and accessible for educational use.
10% Other duties as assigned. The nature of the work is iterative and this allocation is intended to allow for response to evolving findings, determinations, and needs as well as addressing routine administrative tasks.

Required Qualifications:
• ALA accredited Master of Library Science, or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience; a Juris Doctorate degree is desired.

This person is a member of the Bioscience Library Information Services staff and participates in the provision of reference services to the broad UC Berkeley Bioscience and Natural Resources community and in teaching through course-related and drop-in research instruction classes. The Marian Koshland Bioscience and Natural Resources Library at the University of California, Berkeley provides active information support for the research and instructional programs for the departments of Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Integrative Biology in the College of Letters and Sciences, and the College of Natural Resources. This primary user group includes approximately 270 faculty, 700 graduate students and 3,320 undergraduate majors. Additionally, the Bioscience and Natural Resources Library supports the life sciences and natural resources needs for other related disciplines on campus as well as for the general public. The heavily used collection includes 559,000 volumes and over 6500 serial subscriptions in an attractive facility. Responsibilities:
Develops and adapts technologically innovative services to meet the information needs of the campus life sciences research community. In coordination with the Head Librarian and the Head, Information Services, the Emerging Technologies Librarian is responsible for developing a program of web-based bibliographic instruction for the biological and natural resources. Coordinates the development and maintenance of the Bioscience and Natural Resources Library Web site. Trains library staff in innovative uses of software. Administers Macintosh Computer classroom, including investigation of MacIntosh software products.

This librarian will share responsibilities for scheduled reference desk service, as well as electronic reference, providing general and specialized reference in biology and natural resources. Develops web-based instruction through self-instructional techniques such as web-based tutorials and handouts, and participates in classroom instruction (course-related and on specialized electronic resources). UCB librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to be able to work comfortably in a shared decision-making environment, and to be active professionally.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

- Accredited graduate degree in librarianship/information studies; or equivalent combination of education and 3 years of recent research library experience.
- Experience with web-page design using web development and, graphics tools and scripting languages, such as XML, XSLT, CSS, Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop.
- Demonstrated skills in creation of Web documents, including ability to write concisely and effectively for the web.
- Demonstrated aptitude for teaching and developing user-oriented documentation.
- Experience providing reference services with relevant life sciences reference material.
- Demonstrated initiative and flexibility, and ability to work both independently as well as collaboratively; excellent interpersonal, communications, organizational and analytic skills.

Desired:

- Academic background in biological sciences/natural resources.
- Fully functional skills in XHTML, CSS, Javascript, and knowledge of Windows and OS X operating systems.
- Working knowledge of applications running on Macintoshes to be able to install, configure and troubleshoot workstation problems.

- Experience with integrating new and emerging technologies into the delivery of information service.

The University Library serves the Conservatory of Music, which was founded in 1878 and is the oldest music school on the West Coast. Library collections supporting the Conservatory are integrated into the general collections, and this integrated approach is also reflected in the University Library’s public services model. This position offers a challenging range of activities in public services, collection development, and technical and digital services areas. The Access Services/Music Librarian will focus on public, digital, and technical services initiatives to include Cataloging & Metadata, Digital Initiatives, and education and outreach to Conservatory students and faculty. The Access Services/Music Librarian will provide leadership in the design and implementation of services that enhance access to the University Library’s collections throughout the University community.
