Outreach & Inclusion Reference & Instruction Librarian

The EWU Libraries at Eastern Washington University invites applications for a tenure track faculty position to begin in 2013. Position is available now.

This position is an 11-months per year, tenure-track library faculty appointment to perform professional responsibilities in librarianship, scholarship, and service. Responsibilities in librarianship will focus on reference and instruction activities at the JFK Library, Cheney campus, with liaison responsibilities to Race and Culture Studies, Women and Gender Studies, and other student support services.

Position Responsibilities include:

* Develop and implement outreach strategies to EWU's academic programs in collaboration with deans and faculty, Disability Support Services, the Office of Global Initiatives, the Pride Center, and other constituents who play key roles in supporting the Diversity Initiative and incorporating global perspectives into the curriculum.

* Educate and inform the EWU community through collaborative efforts on issues and opportunities related to diversity. Recommend initiatives that will develop a culture which embraces a broad definition of diversity and respect for our differences, including the use of exhibits, programs, and outreach efforts.

* Identify core competencies that librarians can incorporate into instruction and to embed diversity into the curriculum. Provide knowledge of diversity resources for EWU faculty, staff and students.

* Make recommendations for reinforcing a diversity perspective in all areas of the library's policies and procedures. Develop knowledge of internal and external requirements for EWU to ensure support for diversity and inclusion in accordance with University policy.

* Maintain relationships with key University and regional diversity resources.

* Work directly with the library student liaison to guide and promote outreach efforts.

* Provide reference and instruction services using resources that support diversity as it is broadly defined; such as multiculturalism, international studies, ethnic studies programs, and Disability Support Services. Serve as the library liaison to the Race and Culture Studies, Women and Gender Studies, and other student support services.

* Promote awareness of diversity resources within the library and develop library Web pages.

* Provide general assistance to all library patrons at the reference desk and online as scheduled. May be scheduled to work weekends or evenings.

* Assist all instruction librarians in supporting diversity. Prepare user guides, training materials, and programs to enhance instruction.

* Participate in instruction in English Composition program
General

* Participate in library and university committees, governance, and working groups.

* Assist with the ongoing development of the library's Web site.

* Collaborate with a variety of colleagues and clients across the university and the region.

Required Qualifications:

• MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution.
• Minimum 3 years of successful professional library experience.
• Ability to meet tenure requirements as outlined in library policies and procedures.
• Commitment to engage in continuing professional development.
• Demonstrated cultural competence, success working with diverse populations, and a commitment to the tenets of diversity and inclusion.
• Education or experience in multicultural or ethnic studies, international studies, or related field.
• Strong commitment to customer service.
• Demonstrated success in building relationships with constituent groups. Ability to collaborate effectively.
• Demonstrated reference and instruction skills, and the ability to use online and print resources effectively.
• Demonstrated high level of written and oral communication, organizational and problem-solving skills, and aptitude for detail-oriented work.
• Exposure to and awareness of assistive technologies.
• Adeptness at working in a technological and rapidly changing academic library environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Fluency in a second language.
• Experience with using assistive technologies.
• Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in another subject specialty.
