Academic Excellence Librarian

SUNY Geneseo seeks a service-oriented, inquisitive and enthusiastic individual to provide reference, library instruction, writing support and supervision of Service Desk student workers in an active liberal arts environment. Situated between the Service Desk and the Center for Academic Excellence, this position plays a major role in maintaining an established system of reference triage and strengthening connections between members within User Services.

During academic semesters, this librarian will work evenings (Sunday-Thursday, 5 pm-1 am) to cover a heavy portion of the library’s daily activity. During summer months and regular holiday breaks, the evening hours will need to be shifted to an earlier time in the day.

Responsibilities will include: 

  • Provides outstanding research support to individuals and groups through in-person, phone, and online consultations
  • Collaborates with lead stakeholders of the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) to blend, assess and maintain/improve student services
  • Offers workshops of benefit to the CAE’s goals, including plagiarism, the research/writing process, writing style, and study skills
  • Provides late night building supervision, reporting issues to proper campus departments for appropriate resolution and/or taking the necessary independent steps
  • Ensures secure closure of the library each night
  • In cooperation with Digital Media Lab staff and the Library’s Instructional Design team, creates digital assets as tutorials to help expand/support tutor work in the CAE
  • Contributes to the evolution of scholarly publishing practices by assisting campus authors and publishing team with layout, design and editing (e.g., open and traditional textbook projects, e-books, manuscripts and GREAT Day proceedings)
  • Fosters strong, collaborative, ongoing relationships with librarians, faculty, students and staff in an effort to support teaching, learning and research
  • Creates and/or maintains personal, subject, and course-related online research guides and/or instructional tools
  • Participates in the library’s information literacy instruction program, including INTD 105 sessions, GOLD workshops and summer course offerings like local-area high school visits, AOP and RYSAG (all as schedules permit)
  • Completes other duties as assigned
  • Occasional shift changes may occur to accommodate staff meetings

This is a 12-month, full-time tenure-track faculty position at the Senior Assistant Librarian level with attendant expectations for professional competence, service and scholarship. Initial appointment is for two years.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in information and/or library science from an ALA-accredited school or an ALA-approved foreign equivalent;
  • Strong commitment to enhancing service through teamwork and responsiveness to faculty, students, and colleagues;
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and project management skills;
  • Commitment to providing high-quality public service within a flexible and continually evolving academic library environment

Preferred:

  • Academic reference desk experience
  • Evidence of scholarly writing, editing and/or publishing
  • Experience working with academic tutoring
  • Knowledge of issues in scholarly publishing
  • Previous supervisory experience
