This is a full-time appointment available starting July 2013.

The University of California, Berkeley seeks an innovative and service-oriented librarian to serve as the liaison to the Department of Political Science and the School of Public Policy; to provide research support to the UC Berkeley community in political science, public policy, and government information; to develop and promote collections to meet the university’s teaching and research needs; and to enhance access to and use of federal and state government information.

The Environment

The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation's premier public universities. In a highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 25,500 undergraduate students, 10,300 graduate students, and a faculty of 1,500. The Library comprises 20 campus libraries - including the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, the Bancroft Library, the C. V. Starr East Asian Library and subject specialty libraries. With a collection of more than 11 million volumes and a collections budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills.

The Library maintains a research-level collection to support the research and teaching programs of the Charles and Louise Travers Department of Political Science and the Richard and Rhoda Goldman School of Public Policy, as well as other related disciplines, interdisciplinary programs, and professional schools. The Library is a depository for United States and California State government publications, which are heavily used by researchers throughout the university community and beyond.

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for outreach to students and faculty in the assigned departments, ensuring that they are provided with quality reference and research assistance, instruction, and collection development. This position may also provide instruction in other areas working collaboratively with librarians responsible for other disciplines. This position contributes to a variety of reference services, both face-to-face and virtual, and develops and maintains web-based subject guides, tutorials, and other instructional materials.

As library liaison and selector for political science, public policy and legal studies, the librarian will select materials in all formats and will manage budgets and approval plans for materials in these subject areas. Collection development is coordinated through a number of consortial agreements with librarians in the University of California System, Stanford University, and national organizations. The librarian will manage the Library’s participation in federal and state document depository programs and will serve as the liaison to the agencies that administer those programs.
