Research Librarian for the Sciences

Position Summary and Responsibilities

Vassar College Libraries invites candidates with energy, imagination, and initiative to apply for the position of Research Librarian for the Sciences within the Research Services Department. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the rest of the Research Services team to promote library resources and provide well-rounded instruction and reference services through the development of instructional material, course-related teaching, and collection development in the sciences. This position brings science expertise to the department and is a liaison with faculty in the following subject areas: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science and Geography, Environmental Studies, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, and Psychology. Regular night and weekend hours supporting Research Services department activities.

Qualifications:

Required: ALA-accredited MLS, or equivalent experience. Undergraduate degree in the sciences. Professional experience in an academic library and demonstrated knowledge of traditional and electronic reference sources. The successful candidate will have knowledge of current research trends in the sciences and a vision of what research support will entail in the future; and a customer service orientation with strong presentation and interpersonal skills (both oral and written), including an ability to interact and work well with colleagues, students, faculty, and staff with diverse backgrounds, cultures and learning styles. The successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to provide, develop and assess reference, instruction, collection development and liaison services.

Preferred: experience teaching in an academic setting; an advanced degree in one of the sciences; experience providing liaison, instruction and research services to faculty and students within the sciences; a strong understanding of collection development practices, resources and trends; experience applying current knowledge and technology to group and one-on-one instruction; knowledge of scholarly communication issues and a desire to work with the libraries and college in promoting the Institutional Repository.
