Head of Clemons

The University of Virginia Library seeks a progressive librarian as Head of Clemons, the Teaching and Learning Library. Clemons Library, one of the libraries that comprises the University of Virginia Library system, offers services, programs and collections that enhance student learning and support the teaching mission of the faculty. Clemons Library is home to the Robertson Media Center, which includes the Digital Media Lab, and offers technologically enriched spaces for media creation, production, presentation, viewing, and discussion, as well as a host of other spaces that support a spectrum of scholarly activities from group work to quiet study. Clemons also holds the Library’s large circulating video collection as well as print collections supporting media studies, drama and dance. The staff in Clemons Library include experts in the following areas: digital media creation and use; information literacy; collection development with a special focus on media; and instructional project management. These staff offer support to student learners and faculty teachers through a wide variety of services, including project consultation and design, print and video reserves, and instruction in topics as diverse as critical thinking, research methods, 3-D and immersive technologies, digital storytelling, and video capture and editing.

The successful candidate will:

Develop services and collections in Clemons Library that align with the University Library’s strategic directions to enhance student learning and engage with faculty on emerging forms of scholarship.   Assume administrative and managerial responsibility for all operations of Clemons Library. Work with Clemons staff to make the services of Clemons Library highly visible across grounds, performing outreach to U.Va faculty, deans, heads of institutes and centers.

Work closely with colleagues across the Library and the University in planning, resource-sharing, and coordination of programs or initiatives related to the fostering of student success through innovative teaching and enhanced learning.

Qualifications - Required: MLS or other advanced degree; Experience in designing and implementing library services that promote innovative teaching and enhance student success.

Demonstrated knowledge of how widely-used and emerging hardware, software, applications, resources and techniques within an academic environment can enhance and support teaching and learning. Demonstrated administrative ability, including a leadership role among diverse staff.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

Qualifications - Preferred: Evidence of successful implementation of technological solutions to pedagogical and learning needs. Minimum of five years experience in higher education.

Technical expertise sufficient to understand issues relating to the design and implementation of technology services and to guide technical staff. Experience managing media collections and services. Experience in innovative library space design.
