Associate Director, Collection Resources

GENERAL INFORMATION

The University of Southern California (USC) Norris Medical Library seeks an innovative, energetic and service oriented individual to provide outstanding leadership for the library’s Division of Collection Resources.

The Norris Medical Library is an academic research library serving the Schools and Departments of Medicine, Pharmacy, Occupational Science and Biokinesiology/Physical Therapy. The library is strongly user-focused and committed to providing faculty, students, and staff access to a wide variety of electronic information resources, including books, journals, bioinformatics tools, databases, evidence-based resources and resources available via personal digital assistants. RESPONSIBILITIES

· Print book and journal collection development. Select appropriate books and journals for purchase; oversee approval plans; solicit and respond to faculty input; weed older materials; maintain awareness of current HSC programs and research priorities; curate historical collections.

· Electronic book and journal collection development. Select appropriate electronic books and journals for purchase; Collaborate with Head, Metadata and Content Management in negotiating licenses for new electronic resources, and in monitoring their use.

· Financial oversight. Prepare and monitor collection budget of $2.8 million for print and electronic book, journal, and database purchases.

· Oversight of divisional operations. Work with Head Metadata and Content Management to supervise staff, adjust work assignments, plan special projects, and plan and implement Technical Services automated systems.

· ILS system administration. Supervise system use by library staff; plan and manage system upgrades; modify system parameters as needed; respond to staff requests for assistance; produce management reports.

· Professional involvement. Assume leadership positions in local and national library organizations and contribute to publications and conferences.

· Serve on the senior management team assisting the director in library planning, management and innovation.

· Prepare administrative and statistical reports for the director.

QUALIFICATIONS MLS from an ALA-accredited library school and a minimum of five years experience in an academic health sciences library. Strong oral and written skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with culturally diverse library users and adult learners. Demonstrated creativity and initiative. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Intellectually curious and comfortable with change.

SALARY/STATUS Beginning salary between $58,000 - $80,000 depending on experience, plus an additional administrative stipend. This position is in a continuing-appointment track, the USC librarian’s equivalent to tenure.

Communication & Political Science Liaison/Library

Georgia State University Library is part of a dynamic urban university in the heart of Atlanta. The University Library seeks a committed and energetic librarian to provide innovative teaching and research support to the areas of Speech and Journalism within the Department of Communication and the Department of Political Science. For these departments of responsibility, the librarian will develop collections in all formats. This position reports to the Head of Liaison & Outreach Services.

The Department of Communication partners with some of Atlanta’s most vibrant corporate and artistic organizations. Areas of emphasis within Speech and Journalism include Journalism Studies, Political Communication and Speech Communication. Masters degrees are offered in Mass and Human Communication and a doctoral degree is offered in Speech Communication. The Department of Political Science teaches in all of the major fields of the discipline including American Government, Comparative Politics and International Relations. Masters degrees are offered in general Political Science, American Politics, International and Comparative Politics, and Professional Political and Governmental Practices. The department also grants a doctoral degree.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate serves as liaison to assigned Departments; meets regularly with members of the departments to provide information and instruction about library services, collections, and programs. The successful candidate will deliver quality, in-depth reference and consultation services in the designated subject areas; develop library collections in the assigned areas, including participation in the management of the library materials budget; promote the library and information literacy; foster communication between the assigned departments and the library. Liaison librarians assist with the general reference service that includes desk and virtual reference hours and are responsible for occasional weekend and evening hours. As faculty members, liaison librarians serve on library committees and engage in scholarly activities.

Requirements
ALA-accredited master’s degree in information/library science and relevant experience in one of the advertised subject areas. Familiarity with resources in a variety of formats, skill in use of technology and web based applications, excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills. PREFERRED: Second Master’s Degree in appropriate subject area. Experience in Collection Development within one of the subject areas is strongly preferred. Salary and Rank

President & Director

The Board of Trustees of the Free Library of Philadelphia is seeking an outstanding leader as its next President and Director, succeeding Elliot Shelkrot who is retiring after 20 years of distinguished service. The President and Director has the unique opportunity to have a lasting impact on one of Philadelphia’s most honored and treasured institutional resources by leading the organization at a time when the role of libraries is changing rapidly. The President and Director will be expected to lead a new strategic course that will ensure the institution’s continued pre-eminent standing at the national, state, local, and neighborhood levels, while remaining in the forefront of enhancing learning and the cultural growth of the citizens of Philadelphia and the region.

The agenda for the next President and Director will be challenging but fulfilling. World renowned architect Moshe Safdie has been selected to renovate the existing Central Library branch and to build a 200,000 square-foot addition. The President and Director must be a person of consummate skill. The ideal candidate will be experienced in leading a complex organization, and have the knowledge and understanding of what is required for a large urban library to operate in major US city with a diverse population. The ideal candidate must recognize the power of technology to disseminate knowledge and expand the availability of information in the digital age. Library experience is a plus but not a requirement. The new President must be able to demonstrate a passion for the importance of reading and the empowerment of learning. Two Public Services Positions

The Los Rios Community College District has two full-time, tenure-track Librarian (Public Services) positions, located at our American River and Sacramento City Colleges. The Los Rios Community College District is a two-year public college district serving the greater Sacramento region. Our district includes American River, Cosumnes River, Folsom Lake and Sacramento City colleges; major centers in Placerville, Davis, West Sacramento, downtown Sacramento, Natomas and Rancho Cordova; and special services for business and industry. Under the supervision of the Dean, Learning Resources, and in collaboration with the other librarians, the public services librarian shall provide reference and information services to students and staff; plan, develop and coordinate services to the Outreach Centers and Distance Education; provide library instruction in a variety of settings; maintain up-to-date instructional materials for library resources including print, electronic products, and on-line services; and select materials in subject areas for print and electronic collections. The public service librarian may instruct students in credit courses and may be involved in developing and maintaining web resources. The assignment may include day, evening, and weekend hours. In addition, the public services librarian shall serve on area, college, and district committees and assume other responsibilities as assigned.

First-year Experience Librarian

The Position:
Under the leadership of the Mayor and the general direction of the Deputy Chief Operating Officer, the Library Director is responsible for administering a $38.3 million annual budget and providing leadership to a staff of approximately 370 full time employees, as well as hundreds of part time and hourly employees and volunteers. The Director will be leading the changes to the Library Department and inspiring staff in making innovations and changes to modernize and diversify the services offered by the Library.

The Library Director is responsible for developing and implementing Library policies and procedures; applying best business practices to ensure the provision of efficient and effective services to the City; representing the Mayor at City Council and Council committee meetings, and at various civic, business and professional forums. The Director will oversee completion of capital improvement projects; be responsible for the development of the department’s annual budget; liaison with other public and private agencies; and manage and supervise subordinate Library managers and staff.

Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates these qualifications may be qualifying. Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in public administration, business administration, business management, or a related field and a minimum of five years experience involved in the field of library or other government services management is highly desirable. A Master’s Degree in library science is also desirable.

Management Benefits:
The successful candidate will be eligible for participation in the City’s Flexible Benefits Plan ($5,575 annual value for Fiscal Year 2008) which offers several optional benefit plans or a taxable cash option, supplemented by the City’s Management Benefit Plan ($3,000 annual value); paid annual leave accruing at 22 days per year for the 1st through the 15th year of service; defined benefit City retirement with CalPERS reciprocity for those with eligible service; and, optional deferred compensation and 401(k) programs. All employees must join the City’s Supplemental Pension Savings Plan (in lieu of Social Security participation) with a minimum required contribution of 3.00% of salary; however, the City will match salary contributions up to 6.05%, which vest at 20% per year of participation. Benefits currently offered to employees may be subjected to future modifications.

Must be able to work evening weekend schedules, travel to other college sites, and be committed to working with students and faculty in an academic library. Subject & Instruction Librarian – Engineering

The Washington University Libraries in St. Louis are seeking an innovative and progressively minded individual with a strong aptitude for teaching and instruction to serve as the Subject & Instruction Librarian for the Washington University School of Engineering. The individual in this position will play a critical role in creating and implementing a reference service model that meets the unique demands of Engineering faculty and students. This will include integrating library resources into academic courses within the School of Engineering and designing initiatives to assist Engineering students in further developing their information discovery and analysis skills. The Subject & Instruction Librarian for Engineering will cultivate and maintain strong relationships with Engineering faculty and students and work collaboratively with colleagues on library-wide initiatives. This position reports to the Chemistry & Engineering Librarian.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: MLS from an ALA accredited institution, coursework or a degree in one of several areas (engineering, biological, physical sciences, education or instructional technologies), or an undergraduate degree in another discipline with demonstrated experience serving a similar user population. The successful candidate will also have a strong commitment to proactive library services, instruction and outreach; an ability to initiate, plan, and implement projects both independently and as a member of a team; and an ability to embrace change and tolerate ambiguity. Strong teaching, interpersonal communication and outreach skills are essential. Highly Desired: Technology skills including web page development and use of Web 2.0 technologies, especially as they relate to enhanced course instruction.
