Cataloging Librarian

Reporting to the Head Cataloging Librarian, this position is responsible for original and complex copy cataloging of material in all formats, in English and other languages. The position is shared between the Cataloging Department and Special Collections & Archives. The person in the position will provide training and guidance to staff members in these and other departments that work in the online catalog.

Typical Duties:
Catalog all formats of material which may include serials, video recordings, musical sound recordings, and electronic resources, in English and other languages.

Catalog published materials in Special Collections & Archives including rare books, artists' books, local history, and archival book collections, applying rare book thesaurus terms and copy-specific information.

Review vendor-supplied MARC records for electronic resources prior to data loads.

Facilitate training and guidance in the application of cataloging rules and standards.

Delegate appropriate work to Special Collections & Archives student workers doing physical shelf preparation of materials including marking, plating, housing, and minor repairs. Work with the Archives Assistant to ensure that procedures for transferring materials from the open stacks to Special Collections & Archives are followed.

Assist with formulating cataloging policies and address cataloging priorities. Assist in design and manage retrospective conversion and database cleanup projects.

Collaborate with staff in Cataloging, Technical Services, and Special Collections & Archives to evaluate workflow and formulate new workflow.

Contribute to library efforts to improve information discovery through new services and technologies.

Keep current in the field through reading and regular participation in professional meetings, committees, training sessions, listservs, and blogs.

Participate in the Wesleyan community; serve on university committees as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications:
MLS degree from an accredited library school; minimum of one year relevant experience which may include internships. Experience with original and complex copy cataloging in an ILS, preferably Voyager. Experience with AACR2, MARC, and LC classification and name/subject headings. Proven reading knowledge of at least one Western European language in addition to English. Ability to work collegially and independently. Excellent written and oral communication, organizational, and computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with special collections cataloging including DCRM-B and rare book thesauri. Proven reading knowledge of German and Latin. Bibliographic knowledge of at least one non-Roman script such as Russian, Asian languages, Arabic, and/or Indic languages, and the ability to romanize or learn to romanize other scripts. Experience with OCLC Connexion.
