This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced, visionary leader to advance a critical resource in a rising research university with an ambitious agenda of growth and development.

The University of Miami is a private, not-for-profit research university located on a beautiful campus in Coral Gables, part of the dynamic intellectual and cultural community of the Miami area. Over 13,000 full- and part-time faculty and staff provide a comprehensive and robust educational experience to over 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students from around the world. The University's 12 colleges and schools, along with the Division of Continuing and International Education, offer 112 bachelor’s programs, 97 master’s programs, and 59 doctoral programs (55 research/scholarship and 4 professional practice).

The Libraries offer students and faculty one of the most comprehensive information resources in the Southeast to support the research, teaching, and learning enterprises of the University. The University of Miami’s Libraries provide broad and deep resources in all areas of the sciences, including the biomedical and marine sciences, engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, geology and computer sciences. The Libraries’ collections are also rich in the humanities, social sciences, business, and music. A strategic objective of the Libraries is to build a robust virtual library that makes e-content, data, and resources available to users anywhere in the world they may be working.

Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the University Librarian will provide visionary leadership to the Libraries; inspire enriched and expanded scholarship, research and teaching; enhance undergraduate and graduate academic programs; develop, recruit, retain and lead excellent staff; plan creatively for the use of library space; and energetically promote and find support for the mission of the Libraries.

Successful candidates will bring: an understanding of the major challenges facing academic libraries; the capacity to collaborate and communicate with constituencies of faculty, students, staff, and alumni; a successful history of staff development and team building; the capacity to understand and support scholarly research; an awareness of current trends in scholarly publication; the ability to manage a complex physical and virtual environment to deliver information services and preserve information; a willingness to seek out and obtain resources for the development of the Libraries; and the ability to balance support of the Libraries’ traditional collections and services with the development of new strategies to support scholarship, teaching, and learning. The position requires experienced leadership in supporting teaching and research in a complex academic environment along with Master of Library Science (MLS) degree from an ALA-accredited library school or academic credentials appropriate to the leadership of a modern research-intensive library.
