(Specialist
[II] or Expert [III] Librarian)
Position Description: Reporting to the Associate University
Librarian and Director, Hardin Library for the Health Sciences and Branch
Libraries, the incumbent is responsible for:
- Developing and implementing a vision for the Business Library that is housed in and supports the Tippie College of Business’ vision for education, research and service.
- Providing liaison services for the College of Business including reference, research, instruction, scholarly communications, data curation planning and related responsibilities for the disciplines of accounting, economics, finance, management and organizations, management sciences, entrepreneurship and marketing.
- Assisting undergraduate, graduate and professional students in the use and critical evaluation of information resources and necessary information management skills.
- Collecting, managing and maintaining business and economics publications and resources in all formats.
- Supervising 1 librarian and 1.8FTE support staff and various students, requiring competent and effective hiring, training, communication, coaching, performance management, conflict management, and recognition skills.
- Overseeing the day-to day-operations of the Business Library including space planning, staffing and services such as circulation, document delivery and reserves.
- Interacting with appropriate Main Library personnel, Physical Plant Maintenance staff, and College of Business staff to maintain facilities and equipment for the use, preservation, and conservation of materials in the Pomerantz Business Library.
- Participating in University Libraries initiatives by serving on Libraries’ and University committees and contributing to other relevant activities and events such as strategic planning.
- Contributing to and learning from the profession through such avenues as local, state and national professional organizations and publications.
Required Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in library & information science from an ALA accredited institution.
- Demonstrated ability to work creatively in a rapidly changing environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of or experience with emerging trends in librarianship.
- Demonstrated ability to work productively and sensitively with library and university colleagues, faculty, students, researchers, and donors.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment where consultation, flexibility, collaboration and cooperation are essential.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the workplace or community.
- Three years of professional experience to qualify at the Librarian II level plus demonstrated interest in professional development that will enhance the candidate’s value to the Libraries, the University, the profession, or the scholarly community.
- Six years of professional experience to qualify at the Librarian III level plus evidence of continuing achievement, particularly at a national level, in an area or areas of professional interest that will enhance his/her value to the Libraries, the University, the profession of librarianship, or the scholarly community.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience in a Business Library
- Experience providing instruction and reference services
- Experience supervising staff and students
- Knowledge of primary resources for a Business clientele
- Knowledge of scholarly communication and open access initiatives

Salary and
appointment: Appointment will be made at the Specialist or Expert Librarian
level, depending on qualifications. Salary ranges: Specialist Librarian $47,133
- $59,987; Expert Librarian $57,502-$73,184. Start date is negotiable. The

Libraries: The University of Iowa library
system consists of the Main Library, the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences
and a number of branch libraries, which includes the Business Library. The Libraries has more
than 5 million volumes including thousands of electronic resources and
coordinates the development and maintenance of the University’s locally-created
open access digital resources including the Iowa Digital Library, featuring
close to a million digitized texts, images, and audio and video recordings, as
well as Iowa Research Online, our institutional repository. Our Special

city with an excellent quality of life. The city is readily accessible via
interstate highways and a major airport is only 30 minutes away. The community
is growing in its diversity; within the Iowa City Community School District, 33%
of the students are minority, with 17% identifying as African-American, 9% as
Latino/Hispanic, 7% as Asian-American, and .4% as Native American during the
2011/12 school year.
