HEAD, LICHTENBERGER ENGINEERING LIBRARY
The University of Iowa Libraries seeks an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented subject librarian for the Head, Lichtenberger Engineering Library. Working with a team of science, technology and medicine librarians around the campus, this individual is responsible for collection development, research and instruction, and other liaison services to the College of Engineering and the Computer Science Department. Within this context, the Head participates in long-term planning, conducts on-going assessment of collections and services, develops web-based guides and other research and learning products, collaborates on special projects, and serves on committees and task forces as needed. The Lichtenberger Engineering Library, located in the College of Engineering within the Seamans Center for Engineering Arts & Sciences on The University of Iowa Campus, is an innovative space dedicated to providing quality services to students, faculty and staff.
Position Description: Reporting to the Associate University Librarian and Director, Hardin Library for the Health Sciences and Branch Libraries, the incumbent is responsible for:
- Providing liaison services for the College of Engineering including reference, research, instruction, scholarly communications and related responsibilities for the disciplines of civil and environmental engineering, mechanical and industrial engineering, electrical and computer engineering, hydraulic engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, and computer science.
- Assisting students in the use and critical evaluation of information resources and necessary information management skills.
- Participating in the delivery of group instruction in support of the libraries’ outreach endeavors in the university community.
- Collection development, management, and maintenance of engineering and applied computing publications in all formats.
- Directly supervising 1 FTE support staff member, requiring competent and effective hiring, training, communication, coaching, performance management, conflict management, and recognition skills.
- Working with other campus librarians to develop and execute library-wide strategic initiatives and recommend services and activities to the Libraries’ Administration and other appropriate groups and individuals.
- Interacting with appropriate Main Library personnel, Physical Plant Maintenance staff, and Engineering staff to maintain facilities and equipment for the use, preservation, and conservation of materials in the Lichtenberger Engineering Library.
Required Qualifications:
- ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science
- Significant coursework, undergraduate, or graduate degree in engineering or a science
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the workplace or community
- Strong customer service and public services abilities
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team
- Demonstrated interest in an area or areas of professional interest that will enhance the candidate's value to the Libraries, the University, the profession of librarianship, or the scholarly community
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience working in a science or engineering library
- Experience providing instruction and reference services
- Knowledge of primary resources for an Engineering clientele
- Knowledge of course management systems
- Knowledge of scholarly communication and open access initiatives

Salary and appointment: Appointment will be made at the Librarian I or II level with a salary range of $43,000 to $49,000. Start date is negotiable. Lichtenberger Engineering Library: The Lichtenberger Engineering Library primarily supports the combined information and research needs of the College of Engineering and the computer sciences department through consultation, reference, instruction and collection development. Located in the College of Engineering, the Library has seating for 82, a collections budget of over $700,000 and 33 workstations available.
The University of Iowa Libraries: The University of Iowa library system consists of the Main Library, the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences and a number of branch libraries. The Libraries has more than 5 million volumes including thousands of electronic resources and coordinates the development and maintenance of the University’s locally-created open access digital resources including the Iowa Digital Library, featuring more the 440,000 digitized texts, images, and audio and video recordings, as well as Iowa Research Online, our institutional repository. Our Special Collections include over 200,000 rare books, ranging in age from the 15th century to newly created artists’ books.
Library systems are built on a mix of open source, locally developed, hosted services, and vended applications primarily from Ex Libris, OCLC, and Microsoft. The University of Iowa is a member of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), ARL, OCLC, SPARC, CNI, CLIR, LOCKSS, CLOCKSS, and Portico. The Libraries provides a program of support for professional development activities and its staff members are actively engaged in national cooperative efforts.
The University and Iowa City: A major research and teaching institution, the University of Iowa offers internationally recognized programs in a diverse array of academic, medical, and artistic disciplines, from otolaryngology to fiction writing, printmaking to space science, hydraulic engineering to dance. The University consists of a faculty of 2,000 and a permanent staff of 13,000 serving 30,500 students, more than 40% of whom are from out of state and close to 10,000 of whom are registered in graduate and professional degree programs.
