The Benson Latin American Collection
The Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection (http://www.lib.utexas.edu/benson/), a unit of the University of Texas Libraries (http://www.lib.utexas.edu/), is one of the pre-eminent Latin American libraries in the United States and the world. It is a comprehensive collection of Latin American and U.S. Latino materials in all subject areas related to the humanities and social sciences, law and communications, and in all formats. The Benson Collection maintains important holdings for all countries of Latin America with special concentrations on Mexico, the countries of the Río de la Plata, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Central America, especially Guatemala. The Mexican American Library Program, established in 1974, has gathered extensive research materials in all subject areas related to the U.S. Southwest and Latino culture in the United States. Materials in the Benson Collection comprise the initial focus of UT Austin’s participation in the Google Books Library Project.

In collaboration with the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, the Benson Collection preserves government Web sites including ministerial and presidential documents from Latin American countries through the Internet Archive's Archive-It service. An emerging programmatic area of interest is the acquisition and preservation of statistical data sets to support faculty and graduate student research. The Benson Collection contains over 970,000 books, periodicals, and pamphlets, 4,350 linear feet of manuscripts, over 20,000 maps, 42,000 microforms, 12,300 broadsides, 170,000 photographs, and numerous items in a variety of other media. The Collection circulates approximately 100,000 volumes a year, answers 10,000 reference questions, and annually hosts hundreds of scholars from the United States, Latin American, Europe, and Asia. The Benson Collection staff is comprised of 8 librarians, 13 support staff, plus student assistants.
