The University of Virginia Library seeks a creative and energetic professional for the position of Head, Preservation Services. Preservation Services supports the teaching and research programs of the University of Virginia by facilitating and preserving access to the collections of the University of Virginia Library. Units within Preservation Services include Library. Preservation Services is a department within Content Management Services and it partners with units throughout the library to set standards and policies for preservation, participate in special projects, and educate via preservation programming.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Director of Content Management Services, the Head of Preservation Services oversees administrative operations for the preservation of materials in all formats for the Library; coordinates the operational components of the Library’s preservation program including initiatives such as collections disaster planning and user education programs on preservation issues; directly supervises one professional, 3 paraprofessionals and is responsible for the effective performance of student assistants; pursues and administers grant proposals for preservation projects.
Qualifications: Required: Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent advanced degree.
Preferred: a minimum of two years experience in management of preservation units; a broad understanding of and experience in preservation activities in an academic research library setting; knowledge of emerging trends in preservation including both conservation and sustaining collections in a digital environment; demonstrated organizational skills in planning, prioritizing, and achieving goals; supervision of a diverse staff of all levels; experience managing budgets and managing multiple projects; possess a high level of commitment to the field of preservation as evidenced by continuing education or by related professional activities or research; possess excellent oral and written communication skills including presentation experience and grant writing ability.
Salary and Benefits: Competitive depending on qualifications. This position has Administrative and Professional faculty status with excellent benefits, including 22 days of vacation and TIAA/CREF and other retirement plans.
