Social Sciences Librarian

The Social Sciences Librarian will provide support for students and faculty of the departments of Sociology, Social Work, and Journalism.
Duties

The duties and responsibilities of this position include:

  • providing reference service approximately 10 hours per week at a busy general reference desk, including approximately two nights and one weekend per month
  • conducting library instruction for classes from the departments Sociology, Social Work, and Journalism
  • conducting general library outreach and instruction sessions as requested
  • serving as the library’s subject specialist and liaison for the above departments
  • engaging in library and university governance and scholarship, including research and publication

Qualifications
Required:
· Masters degree from an American Library Association-accredited institution by the date of appointment
· experience working collaboratively with college/university faculty, staff, and students
· effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
· ability to communicate with/relate to an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community
· the ability to fulfill the scholarly and service expectations of a tenure-track position
· a thorough grounding in instruction, including the ability to impart information literacy skills and concepts, to develop effective instructional materials, and to show students how to formulate information-seeking strategies, particularly at the college level
· ability to evaluate, select, and review information resources in relation to curricular needs

Desired:
· a degree in any discipline within the social sciences
· ability to function as a generalist in a cooperative, general reference environment
· proficiency in using and teaching electronic information resources
· manifestation of a commitment to service excellence
· record of significant involvement in library and/or social science-related professional organizations
· flexibility, initiative, and tolerance for ambiguity; ability to flourish in a rapidly changing environment

Required Documentation
Candidates must submit:
· a letter of application addressing each of the required qualifications and as many of the desired qualifications as applicable (please be as specific as possible)
· a current resume
· up-to-date letters of recommendation from three persons able to comment upon the candidate’s ability to fulfill the library’s requirements and expectations of the position
· a copy of the official transcript from the university awarding the library Masters degree (a photocopy is acceptable until the official transcript can be provided)
· an official University application form (SC-1)

This is a full-time tenure track faculty position. CSULB librarians are represented by the California Faculty Association, a CTA/NEA and AAUP affiliate. The University provides comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, sick leave and vacation. A ten-month work year is negotiable.

Salary Range
Senior Assistant Librarian (12 month) $55,944-$70,680
Associate Librarian (12 month) $64,320-$89,472
