Communication Librarian


The University of Texas at Austin Libraries is seeking a Communication Librarian. The successful candidate will join a team of customer-focused, dedicated librarians within Reference & Information Services (RIS) to serve as a proactive, innovative liaison for the College of Communication, The University of Texas at Austin.

This position offers opportunity for strategic and interdisciplinary approaches to the selection, teaching, discovery, and delivery of digital and print information resources within the Reference & Information Services , the University of Texas  Libraries.
Primary responsibilities include:
  • Provide reference in all appropriate mediums including individual and small group research consultation; and staffing of the Ask a Librarian virtual and in person reference services
  • Manage collections in support of relevant curricula and research
  • Develop content for subject-based web pages
  • Provide outreach to faculty and administration in subject departments to exchange information about reference services and collections
  • Collaborate with faculty to achieve information literacy learning outcomes in course-specific ways, including providing instruction sessions and assignments, research guides, and/or tutorials; and
  • Provide marketing and assessment of library services
  • Responsibility for additional subject areas may be assigned
  • Work closely with RIS staff on departmental initiatives, actively participate in UT Libraries and other local committee and project team efforts, as well as pertinent professional organizations and staff development opportunities

The position reports to the Head Librarian, RIS within the User Services Division – University of Texas Libraries.  The RIS department is located in the Perry-CastaƱeda Library (PCL), the main library of the University of Texas Libraries which supports the social sciences, humanities, business and education, see http://www.lib.utexas.edu/ for details.

Required Qualifications:

  • MLS from an ALA accredited graduate program.
  • A degree in or one year of collection development experience in one or more of these disciplines: Advertising and Public Relations, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Communication Studies, Journalism, and Radio-Television-Film.
  • Experience providing library instruction, or creating library instruction materials such as assignments, research guides and tutorials for college-level students and faculty.
  • Experience providing reference service in an academic library or research environment.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to user-centered services. 
  • Extensive knowledge of academic electronic information resources and an awareness of current issues in academic library services.
  • Evidence of excellent communication, public speaking, teaching, writing and analytical skills. 
  • Demonstrated willingness to respond to new opportunities with initiative, creative energy, and leadership.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in Advertising and Public Relations, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Communication Studies, Journalism, or Radio-Television-Film.
  • Two to four years of successful professional library experience with responsibility for one or more of these subject areas.
  • Two years of experience providing library instruction to graduate students, faculty, and staff.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty on instruction or outreach projects. 
  • Experience using new and emerging technologies for public service and instruction in an academic library setting.
  • Demonstrated potential for leadership in university, state, national, and international programs and initiatives.
  • Evidence of problem solving skills.
  • Experience related to the duties.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and efficiently in a fast-paced and evolving technological, team-oriented and change-ready environment.
  • Proven ability to be flexible in work assignments and environments.

Salary and Benefits:   $46,000 annually or more, depending upon qualifications and experience. No state or local income tax. Standard state benefits package including annual vacation and sick leave, paid holidays, retirement plans, and health insurance options (comprehensive major medical, dental, vision, life, and disability). Deferred compensation and tax sheltered annuity programs also available. Working hours for the position are typically Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm or as arranged for a total of 40 hours per week.  Some evening and weekend hours required due to class or other event schedules.
