About the job

Under the general supervision of the Head of Archives & Special Collections, and working closely with the Metadata Librarian and Digital Initiatives Librarian, the Digital Projects Archivist supports the teaching and research missions of the Mansfield Library and The University of Montana by processing archival collections and taking a lead role in digital projects conducted by Archives & Special Collections. The Digital Projects Archivist will also provide research and reference assistance to users of Archives & Special Collections material.

This is a tenure track faculty position with a twelve month appointment.

Primary Functions of the Position

·         Arrange and describe manuscript materials and university records.
·         Investigate, make recommendations and implement processes, workflows and associated functionality for the curation of digitized and born digital material from Archives & Special Collections - including accessioning, appraisal, management, discovery and dissemination - based upon existing principles, standards and methodologies for paper-based material, on best practices for digital materials, and with attention to practical solutions that fit the Library’s needs and means.
·         Working with the Digital Initiatives Librarian, ensure the preservation and accessibility of the department’s permanently valuable born digital and digitized records and collections.
·         Manage the identification, placement and presentation of content from Archives & Special Collections in the Library’s Institutional Repository.
·         Manage the Mansfield Library’s Archive-it subscription and services.
·         Create and edit EAD documents with understanding of and attention to detail and accuracy in both descriptive content and XML.
·         Staff the Archives & Special Collections Reference Desk, providing general research and reference services to users of Archives & Special Collections materials.

Required:
·         ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent in library or information science by date of hire.
·         Knowledge of and coursework specific to the principles of archival management.
·         Experience processing archival collections.
·         Experience with digitization projects in a library or related setting.
·         Experience in the application of data content and data structure standards relevant to the archival control of digital collection materials.
·         Knowledge of digital preservation standards.
·         Knowledge of current web technology.
·         Understanding of relational databases.
·         Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
·         Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
·         Demonstrated ability to coordinate projects effectively, including organization, prioritization and goal-setting skills.
·         Demonstrated ability to work individually and collaboratively in a team environment.

Preferred:
·         Knowledge of western history, especially Montana history.
·         Experience working in an archives or special collections unit.
·         Experience with digital asset management.
·         Familiarity with archival collections management systems or databases, such as
Archivists Toolkit or Archon.
·         Understanding of copyright and rights management issues within a digital environment.


Minimum Salary:  $44,815
Desired Start Date:  July 1, 2011 (negotiable)
