The Staff Development and Cultural Diversity Officer will work under the general supervision of the Library’s Chief Operating Officer and will be expected to carry out a wide range of projects and activities supporting the Library’s diversity initiatives and the staff development needs of the University Library staff. As a participant in the Library’s staff planning, review, and decision-making process, the Staff Development and Cultural Diversity Officer will be responsible for coordinating, developing and promoting initiatives and programs that insure a professional, inclusive and pluralistic work environment. The incumbent will also be responsible for assisting with the Library’s librarian and professional recruitment program and coordinating minority outreach initiatives.

Responsibilities:
Administer the Library staff development program by planning, scheduling, promoting, and evaluating staff development, continuing education, and orientation activities for the University Library staff.
· Conduct formal assessment and consult with Library administrators and staff to determine staff development needs in order to develop innovative programs.
· Develop an appropriate curriculum for improving managerial, interpersonal, and communication skills that effectively meet the needs of increasingly diverse faculty, students and staff.
· Develop and coordinate Library training programs and activities to increase staff skills in targeted and general development areas.
· Evaluate training and developmental efforts against identified goals and monitor effectiveness of programs.
· Provide leadership and coordination of various professional developmental programs including orientation, mentorship programs, and cultural diversity.
· Develop program budgets and monitor allocation, expenditures and encumbrances on staff development budgets.
Provide leadership, guidance, and assistance with the development, facilitation, implementation, and evaluation of Library diversity initiatives.
· Determine goals, objectives and strategies in establishing and implementing system-wide diversity initiatives in the areas of human resources, user services, and collection management.
· Develop effective mechanisms for evaluating Library diversity initiatives.
· Conduct research on diversity related topics including planning, design, and coordination of various studies and special projects. Write reports, communiqués and compile and analyze statistical data.
· Facilitate communication and perform liaison functions between Library administration and Library unit activities, including the Library Diversity Committee, related to cultural diversity.
· Represent the Library at appropriate meetings and professional activities and work with various University officers and constituents in the area of cultural diversity.
· Establish outreach mechanisms for diversifying applicant pools for all Library positions.
Assist with the Library’s Librarian recruitment program and other minority outreach activities:
· Lead the minority outreach initiatives and assist the LHR staff responsible for coordinating Librarian recruitment activities.
Qualifications:
Required: Graduate degree from an ALA-accredited library program or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience; prior experience working in an academic environment; knowledge of trends and issues related to staff development and training in academic research libraries; knowledge of trends and issues related to organizational culture and cultural diversity; substantial experience in working effectively with a large diverse staff; ability to provide leadership and manage programs and initiatives; outstanding communication skills; and ability to work independently within a variety of assignments.
