The Virginia Beach Public Library System provides free access to accurate and current information and materials to all individuals, and promotes reading as a critical life skill. It supports the educational and leisure needs of citizens with a system of area libraries and services consisting of a Central Library located in an upscale and popular “town center” and 8 neighborhood branches, a bookmobile, public law library and special services for the blind and visually handicapped. Librarian I Reference and Information Services
Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library (2 vacancies)
Salary Range: $39,446 - $59,169
Minimum Qualifications: Requires a Master of Library Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university or Virginia State Library Certification. This is an entry level position with opportunity for career progression. Work in a team oriented and collaborative environment , which provides advanced reference and information services to library customers through reference interviews, the research process and techniques using print, non print, electronic and Internet resources; promotes and markets the library’s collection and services through bibliographic instruction, tours, displays, programs and other activities. Additional duties may be assigned to ensure the day-to-day work flow of the agency.

Librarian I Youth and Family Services
Serves multiple locations (1 vacancy)
Salary Range: $39,446 - $59,169
Minimum Qualifications: Requires a Master of Library Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university or Virginia State Library Certification with an emphasis on Teen services. This is an entry level position with opportunity for career progression. Work in a team oriented and collaborative environment, providing quality services for all Virginia Beach citizens aged 0-18, with an emphasis on Teen services. These services include, but are not limited to: presenting storytimes and special programming for children, teen program planning, providing reader’s advisory, reference and information services to children and teens, assisting with the system Winter and Summer Reading Programs, supervising the teen advisory groups, providing training for staff in youth services and assessing and coordinating teen services for the Virginia Beach Public Library system. Additional duties may be assigned to ensure the standardization of Youth and Family services programs across the system.


Librarian I – Collection Development Librarian
Collection Management (1 vacancy)
Salary Range: $39,446 - $59,169
Minimum Qualifications:
Requires a Master of Library Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university or Virginia State Library Certification. This is an entry level position with opportunity for career progression. The Collection Management Division provides centralized selection for all library agencies. Along with three other Collection Development Librarians, this position analyzes data to determine collection needs, selects materials; recommends budget allocations and monitors expenditures; responds to requests for materials from staff and customers; recommends collection policy and guidelines and serves on the departmental Collection Management Team. The emphasis for this position is reference, electronic resources, DVD’s and Dewey 100’s and 300’s.


The Virginia Beach Public Library Department will consider an applicant within 6 months of obtaining a Masters in Library Science (MLS/MLIS).
