Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences Librarian

$53,116 – $62,371 per annum, based on qualifications
This is a full-time appointment available starting February 2014. 

The University of California, Berkeley seeks an energetic, creative and service-oriented librarian to provide research support to the UC Berkeley community in natural resources and environmental science and to develop, promote and enhance access to library collections that meet the university’s teaching and research needs. The Librarian will contribute to public services and work closely with colleagues to address interdisciplinary areas. 

The Environment  

The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation's premier public universities. In a highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 25,500 undergraduate students, 10,300 graduate students, and a faculty of 1,500. The Library comprises 20 campus libraries - including the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, the Bancroft Library, the C. V. Starr East Asian Library and subject specialty libraries. With a collection of more than 11 million volumes and a collections budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills. 

The Marion Koshland Bioscience & Natural Resources Library is one of the science libraries in The Library of the University of California, Berkeley. The Bioscience & Natural Resources Library maintains research-level print and digital collections that support the research and teaching programs of the College of Natural Resources, College of Letters & Science’s Division of Biological Sciences, and several campus museums, as well as researchers throughout the university community and beyond.  


Reporting to the Acting Head of the Bioscience & Natural Resources Library, this librarian will serve as selector for collections in plant and microbial biology, environmental science and policy management, and forestry. The librarian selects materials in all formats, manages collections through storage and weeding, and monitors budgets and approval plans for the assigned subject areas. The librarian also collaborates with colleagues on campus and UC System-wide on collection decisions for print and electronic resources. The librarian contributes to reference and research assistance; teaches course-integrated instruction and workshops; creates instructional materials, online subject guides, and library exhibits; and sustains ongoing communication with and outreach to students and faculty. The librarian will assume responsibility for one of the Library’s initiatives such as data management, instruction and online education, outreach, scholarly communication, or web services. 

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to work effectively in a shared decision-making environment, and to be active professionally. Professional contributions beyond the primary responsibilities are required for advancement in the Librarian series. The successful candidate will show promise or evidence of such contributions.  

Basic Qualifications required by time of application:
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or library experience in one or more related science fields
Additional Qualifications:
  • MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited library school by start date
  • Experience participating in collection development in an academic or research library preferably experience developing and managing science collections
  • Experience providing reference and instructional services in an academic or research library
  • Demonstrated commitment to public services and improving the user experience
  • Demonstrated aptitude for developing and teaching user-oriented documentation
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, problem solving, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated initiative, the ability to work creatively, independently and as a team member
  • Understanding of current and emerging trends in the subject areas
  • Knowledge of trends and issues in scholarly communication in the sciences
  • Knowledge of electronic and information technologies, including bibliographic management tools and data management and planning
