Associate Director, Health & Life Sciences Partnerships

Job Overview:
The Associate Director has primary responsibility for the Libraries programs of liaison to Drexel's life & health sciences communities and scholarly engagement.  Built through partnerships, liaison activities align and integrate the Libraries programs of information literacy, research services, collection development and access services into the teaching, research and scholarly communication efforts of the University community.  Scholarly engagement, most often provided via reference consultation, provides personalized information services for members of the university community. 

The Health & Life Sciences Partnership program builds and maintains relationships and partnerships with key faculty and staff of the Drexel College of Medicine, the College of Nursing & Health Professions, the School of Public Health, the School of Biomedical Engineering & Health Systems, and the College of Arts & Sciences.  The Associate Director leads a group of health & life sciences liaison librarians to embed information literacy and skills development into the curricula of life sciences and to provide reference and research consulting.  Working with the Director, Academic Partnerships the Associate Director coordinates selection and collections oversight for resources in health & life sciences. 

The Scholarly Engagement program provides personal information services to all members of the university community.  Delivered in person and virtually, by appointment or on-demand, Scholarly Engagement is the result of the efforts of twelve liaison librarians working directly with faculty and students to facilitate solutions for their specific information needs for learning and research.  The Associate Director will lead the Libraries continued evolution of reference through the Scholarly Engagement program. 

The Associate Director reports to the Director of Library Academic Partnerships; a division that enables students to explore and develop superior levels of competency in the Drexel Student Learning Priorities (DSLP); identifies authoritative information resources for the university community; coaches and guides community members to resources; and facilitates faculty and student research and scholarship.  The Director and Associate Director, together with the Manager, Learning Engagement, form a collaborative leadership team, responsible for developing a cadre of liaison librarians in building partnerships that enhance Drexel's contributions to scholarship, teaching and learning.

The Associate Director is an integral part of the Libraries' Managerial Leadership Group (MLG), a dynamic and collaborative group of library program managers who contribute to the ongoing operations of the DUL through participation in divisional planning and decision-making, and in implementation of library policies. Regular reporting of activities and appropriate assessments are required.  Libraries professional staff are expected to participate in university-wide activities and initiatives and are expected to contribute to the profession through professional memberships, participation in professional development activities, research and publication.

Qualifications:
Required qualifications:

  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program in Library & Information Studies or equivalent graduate degree
  • Minimum of five years of professional experience in a medical or life sciences library with specific experience in reference, liaison and/or instructional activities.
  • Minimum of three years administrative and supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of sources and procedures relevant to life sciences reference and research; familiarity with evidence-based health sciences education
  • Experience with procedures and techniques in the selection of materials in support of health sciences research, education, and patient care
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Evidence of professional development, local and national professional and scholarly activities.
  • Undergraduate degree and/or additional masters' degree in a STEM related discipline
  • Demonstrated participation in science or health sciences research in an academic setting
  • Experience working in a collaborative, matrix organization
  • Management of the Health & Life Sciences Partnership program
  • Collaboration with key constituents in the life sciences and Libraries' staff to represent Libraries across the University community

Outreach/Communication Coordinator

The Southeastern/Atlantic Regional Medical Library (SE/A), housed within the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL), seeks an experienced librarian to ensure an organized approach to the SE/A outreach services and communications by coordinating and facilitating outreach and promotional activities.  This librarian coordinates and facilitates the SE/A’s exhibit program, regional outreach projects, subcontracts targeting health professionals, and SE/A communication program; performs library advocacy; and delivers consultation and training to health professionals and their associations. The Coordinator assesses and responds to the information and educational needs of health care and health information professionals and the public.  S/he markets and publicizes the services and products of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM). 

This is a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position, reporting to the Executive Director of the Regional Medical Library.  The incumbent may be appointed at a rank of Librarian II or higher in accordance with the University’s policy on the appointment of faculty librarians (USM/UM Policy II 1.00(F)). 

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversees outreach activities for the SE/A’s unaffiliated and minority health professionals.
  • Coordinates communication and promotional programs including national and regional exhibits, regional webinars, presentations at association meetings and exhibits, librarian advocacy, featured articles for SEA Currents, and contact with health professionals’ associations.
  • Develops strategies and materials to promote use of NLM and NN/LM products and services to SE/A target populations such as health professionals, librarians, and the general public.
  • Oversees the design of the traveling exhibit, outreach publicity, and promotional materials for use in SE/A outreach activities.
  • Staffs and recruits others to staff the national and regional exhibits.
  • Assists the Outreach/Access Coordinator with hospital library advocacy programs. 
  • Identifies and develops programs that focus on health professionals, especially those serving specific populations or in subject disciplines identified by NLM as high priorities such as unaffiliated health professionals, inner city health professionals, minority health professionals, and public health professionals.
  • Provides demonstrations, training sessions, and exhibits featuring NLM databases and resources such as PubMed and MedlinePlus. Consults on questions concerning NLM resources.
  • Works with the NLM National Training Center to schedule and publicize classes in the SE/A region. 
  • Works with health professional associations to award continuing medical education credits for SE/A courses as needed.
  • Promotes NLM and NN/LM SE/A funding opportunities and assists potential applicants with applications and proposals; identifies other grant and funding opportunities for health professionals’ associations, health professionals, and others.
  • Develops and implements outreach programs and training sessions that address the information needs of health professionals and health sciences librarians in the sub-region of Maryland, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, and South Carolina.
  • Presents information about NN/LM programs in training sessions, at NLM resource demonstrations, association meetings, exhibits, and other events as required. Contributes articles to the regional electronic newsletter.
  • With other outreach coordinators, develops needs assessment tools and coordinates their use in the region.
  • Participates in the development, evaluation and testing of NN/LM and NLM products and services.
  • With the Executive Director and other SE/A staff, represents the SE/A throughout the region.
  • Promotes communication throughout the region by providing feedback and evaluations on products and services and projects, participating in teleconferences, and attending scheduled meetings.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • ALA-accredited MLS degree
  • Minimum of 3 years’ health sciences library experience
  • Demonstrated experience with searching NLM databases, especially MEDLINE and MedlinePlus
  • Teaching and training experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Recent experience with library technology
  • Ability to set up computers and exhibits
  • Ability and desire to travel; a driver’s license and the ability to rent a car are essential

PREFERRED:
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of or experience with public health resources
  • Instructional design and course development experience, including evaluation
  • Experience conducting research in information science or instructional design

SALARY:   Starting at $55,000 commensurate with experience

The Health Sciences and Human Services Library at the University of Maryland, Baltimore
The HS/HSL is the second largest health sciences library on the East Coast, providing access to over 374,000 bound volumes, 8400 unique electronic and print periodicals, 96 databases and an array of progressive services, products and programs. Sixty-five FTEs and 25 faculty librarians staff the library. Our attractive facility, which opened in 1998, provides over 900 seats, 40 group study rooms, 130 individual study carrels, 60 public-access computers, wireless Internet access, 3 computer classrooms, a presentation and production studio, an art gallery, and multiple meeting spaces.

The Rutgers University Libraries seek an experienced library administrator to fill the position of Director of the John Cotton Dana Library, which includes the world-renowned institute of Jazz Studies, on the Newark Campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.  Reporting to the VP for Information Services & University Librarian, the Director serves as a member of the University Librarian’s Cabinet, the Libraries senior management team.  In collaboration with Dana librarians, archivists, and staff, has direct responsibility for personnel matters, including recruitment, appointment, and evaluation for 17 librarians and archivists and 22 staff.  Manages an annual budget of $2.7 million. Fosters professional growth of Dana Library faculty by placing priority on collegiality, leadership, and scholarly accomplishment.  Provides leadership in planning, budgeting, professional development and training, and in developing strategic resources, facilities, and services for students and faculty.  Oversees, supports, and nurtures the Institute of Jazz Studies.  Champions the Rutgers University Libraries system-wide resources and services and the Dana Library with the chancellor, deans, department chairs, program directors, and faculty on the Newark Campus.  Seeks external support through fund raising and grants.  Articulates and fosters a strong sense of community on the campus, with other Newark cultural institutions, and in the Libraries.

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree from an ALA accredited institution, with an advanced degree preferred. A strong record of leadership and accomplishment in an academic or research library setting with a minimum of five years of increasingly responsible administrative experience, including budget and personnel, required.  The ability to manage the Dana Library within a large and complex organization in a rapidly changing technological environment, to serve the research and information needs of a diverse population of students and scholars, to engage the Dana Library with the campus urban mission, and to maintain strong ties to the Newark community required.  Key skills include effective communication and outreach with faculty, students, administration, staff, and alumni; collaboration and consensus building; mentoring; innovation; advocacy; strategic planning; budgeting; ability to delegate effectively; and fundraising.  The Director is a senior faculty member and administrator and, as such, plays a critical role in the appointment, reappointment, and promotion of library faculty on the campus and must qualify for tenure in the library faculty on appointment. Business Librarian

Georgia State University Library seeks a collegial and forward-thinking librarian to provide innovative outreach services, instruction, and research support to students and faculty in the J. Mack Robinson College of Business. Working in a highly collaborative, team-based environment, Business Librarians are responsible for delivering quality online and in-person instruction, providing in-depth research consultations, and building strong partnerships with Robinson College faculty, programs, and institutes. Subject librarians also provide general research assistance both online and at the Library’s User Services Desk. Some weekend and evening work required. This is a 10-month position (August-May). The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries invites applications for Special Collections Librarian.


Reporting to the Head of Special Collections Technical Services, the Special Collections Librarian will be dedicated to improving access to and discovery of archival materials in Special Collections. The incumbent will join a new department responsible for accessioning, processing, and preserving Special Collections materials in all formats. This department will work closely with the Libraries’ Digital Collections Department and Discovery Services Department.  


The Special Collections Librarian will be key in implementing a new archival collection management system and will be responsible for analyzing, mapping, standardizing, consolidating, and encoding description from multiple sources. The incumbent will also conduct a survey of holdings and analyze their value and processing needs. He/she will help ensure that Special Collections achieves a baseline of physical and intellectual control over all of its archival holdings. He/she will create, review, and upload finding aids. He/she will be instrumental in digitization workflows. The incumbent may eventually work with born digital records, including web archives, as well as complex archival processing projects. The incumbent will serve on Special Collections’ Reference Desk and assist in the department’s many outreach activities to the campus and community.

Head, Special Collections Technical Services

Reporting to the Director of Special Collections, the Head of Special Collections Technical Services will manage a core of four full-time staff and will re-envision technical services operations in Special Collections. The position will be responsible for leading a new department in the creation of integrated workflows for accessioning, processing, cataloging, preserving, and digitizing Special Collections materials in all formats.  The position will lead efforts to improve access to and discovery of special collections materials, including planning and implementing a collection survey, implementing a collection management system, establishing baseline standards for archival description,  addressing archival processing and print cataloging backlogs, planning digitization workflows and projects, and initiating media migration projects. The position will be key in the Libraries’ efforts to build skills and infrastructure for managing born-digital special collections materials.  This position will collaborate closely with multiple departments, including Digital Collections and Discovery Services.  


Responsibilities include providing leadership on technical services issues in special collections; establishing local policy and practice according to national trends, best practices, and standards; overseeing all workflows for acquiring, processing, and making special collections materials available; developing processing plans and priorities; ensuring timely access to and discoverability of all special collections materials; managing Special Collections stacks space;  and gathering and assessing data about collections to foster continuous improvement of workflows and outputs.  The incumbent will serve on Special Collections’ Reference Desk and assist in the department’s many outreach activities to the campus and community.

Digital Humanities Librarian

The Rutgers University Libraries seek a motivated, innovative, and service-oriented librarian to fill the position of Digital Humanities Librarian on the New Brunswick campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
 
 
The Digital Humanities Librarian will:
  • Provide leadership and instruction within the Libraries on the creation and curation of digital objects for the humanities in all formats, fostering collaboration among scholars, technologists, and information specialists.
  • Utilize the infrastructure of RUcore (Rutgers Community Repository) to archive, preserve, and present digital resources.
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders to integrate digital resources, methodologies, technologies, and analytical tools in the humanities disciplines.
  • Partner with faculty and library subject specialists to incorporate digitized and born-digital resources into humanities research and teaching activities.
  • Engage and collaborate actively as liaison to students, faculty and staff of the departments of Italian, French, and Comparative Literature, providing instruction and research consultations, and developing print and digital collections in support of teaching and research.
  • Participate and teach in a proactive user education program and provide a full range of in-person and virtual reference service.
 
This tenure-track position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Research & Instructional Services and is a member of the New Brunswick Libraries Faculty, a team of librarians committed to providing first-rate public services to a diverse academic community. The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to continual professional development through scholarly research including publications, presentations and participation and leadership in the work of relevant professional associations.
 
QUALIFICATIONS: A Master’s degree in Library or Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent; fluency in Italian and/or French; and experience with digital projects and humanities education and research are required. Metadata Librarian for Continuing Resources, Scholarship and Data

The Rutgers University Libraries (RUL) seek an innovative, flexible, and energetic individual to serve as Metadata Librarian for Continuing Resources, Scholarship and Data, supporting the system-wide resource access needs of Rutgers University. The individual will provide leadership, management, and strategic planning for bibliographic access to print and electronic continuing resources, scholarly papers and presentations, and research data in all formats, ensuring effective and accurate access to these resources in the library’s catalog, institutional repository and forthcoming webscale discovery layer environments. This position will provide metadata for resources in the scholarly information cycle, from research data to scholarly articles and published journals. The successful candidate will collaborate with library and academic faculty to describe and facilitate access to faculty publications and complex research data resulting from grants and other research activities, using the libraries’ RUcore cyberinfrastructure. In consultation with other librarians and the Associate University Librarian (AUL), Digital Library Services, this position will:
  • Ensure effective and accurate access to print and electronic continuing resources utilizing AACR2/MARC and RDA, when locally implemented, in the library’s SirsiDynix catalog and forthcoming webscale discovery environment.  
  • Work with library liaison faculty, academic faculty and others to understand the current and emerging needs of faculty for access, impact and reuse of scholarly and research resources in the RUcore repository.  
  • Engage with library liaison faculty and RUcore managers and developers to design and implement tools, services and support new modes of scholarly communication , education and research at Rutgers University.
  • Develop application profiles and strategies to integrate continuing resources (e.g., journals, newspapers, yearbooks) into the Libraries’ RUcore repository.
  • Define metadata requirements for research data and scholarly publications, establish application profiles and develop vocabularies to ensure a heavily used interdisciplinary institutional repository.
  • Collaborate with other metadata librarians to develop ontology services for a wide range of education and research needs.
  • Provide leadership and management to the Continuing Resources, Scholarship and Research Metadata unit of Central Technical Services, consisting of two full-time staff catalogers.
  • Participate in library committees, provide training and leadership within the department, and coordinate the provision of metadata services provided by departmental staff to a wide range of digital projects.
  • Remain abreast of current technologies and trends and represent the libraries in professional associations and at conferences in this area.

Middle Eastern Studies Librarian


The Middle Eastern Studies Librarian develops and manages the collection of materials in all formats from and about the Middle East.  The position reports to the Global Studies Coordinator.

The Middle Eastern Studies Program is a Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center for Middle Eastern Studies.  The Middle East Library Program is part of the University of Texas Libraries Research Services Division and Global Studies Program.  The Middle East collection, housed primarily in the Perry- CastaƱeda Library, is one of the nation’s most significant collections in Western European and Middle Eastern languages.  The Library’s resources are in all subjects, including anthropology, arts and architecture, economics, language and literature, history, media studies, philosophy, politics, religion, politics, etc.  The Perry-CastaƱeda Library is the main library of the University library system, with emphasis on the social sciences, humanities, business and education. LIBRARIAN RESPONSIBILITIES
Collection Development: Develops a research collection of materials from and about the Middle East extending as far as Afghanistan and Central Asia in Arabic, Persian, Turkish and all other languages of significance to this field.  Responsible for selection of books, journals, and other information resources in all formats, including electronic resources, in Middle Eastern and Western European languages.  Coordinates collection development within the libraries in this interdisciplinary subject area and pursues opportunities for digitization of unique materials as appropriate. Participates at appropriate national meetings, such as MESA and MELA and acts as liaison with UT’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies and Department of Middle Eastern Studies. Responsible for the management, preservation and evaluation of the collection. Participates in Library-wide collections initiatives.

Technical Services Workflow:  Determines priorities for processing and cataloging of Middle Eastern materials. Liaises with and assists the Head of the non-Roman cataloging unit who supervises the Graduate Research Students who perform the ordering, receiving, serial check-in and cataloging of the Arabic, Persian and Turkish materials.

Public and Research Services:  Provides specialized Middle Eastern Studies reference services, assists library users in locating and evaluating Middle Eastern Studies information and provides outreach to faculty, students and other library users.  Works closely with relevant departments and centers to develop new initiatives and projects.  Public service responsibilities include reference consultations by appointment, course-integrated instruction, and creating and maintaining web accessible research guides.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Librarian I:  American Library Association Master's degree in Library and Information Sciences with specialization in or extensive knowledge of the history, and culture of the Middle East. Fluent in Arabic or Persian. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Librarian II:  American Library Association Master's degree in Library and Information Sciences with specialization in or extensive knowledge of the history, and culture of the Middle East. Fluent in Arabic or Persian. Work has proven increasing specialization in Middle Eastern Studies. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
