General Description:
The Head of Instructional Services leads the design, implementation, and assessment of the Portland State Library’s instructional services; coordinates the teaching activities of the Library; and integrates information literacy into the curriculum. The Head of Instructional Services develops creative strategies to deliver library instruction; identifies best practices and standards of excellence for teaching; develops a positive and shared vision of library instruction; and provides training and continuing education to library instructors. The Head is responsible for the collection and reporting of data for the instructional program and student learning outcomes assessment. She or he also manages and develops library teaching facilities, including the Library instruction classrooms, participates in providing reference services, and serves as a liaison to one or more departments within the Graduate School of Education. The Head of Instructional Services supervises the Distance Learning Librarian and the University Studies and Education Librarian ( responsible for the coordination of general education). The Head of Instructional Services is professionally active and contributes to developments in the field. Portland State faculty contribute to faculty governance activities within the Library and the University, engage in community and professional service, and pursue an active publication and research agenda. This full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty position with the rank of Assistant Professor, reports to the Assistant University Librarian for Public Services. All faculty members must adhere to University and Library policies and procedures, including Portland State University’s Professional Standards of Conduct.

Specific Responsibilities
• Coordinate instruction services at the Portland State Library, including the teaching activities of the department's fourteen reference librarians, ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of instruction services.
• Work collaboratively with librarians, teaching faculty, student services units, and Library personnel, to integrate information literacy into the curriculum and increase access to Library instructional services.
• Teach students formally and informally, in person and online, in the use of research tools and methods, and foster the development of their information literacy skills.
• Establish goals and assessment methods for student learning outcomes in General Education and departmental instruction.
• Work with departmental liaison librarians to develop instructional services for academic departments.
• Work with the Distance Learning Librarian to integrate library instructional services into the University’s Learning Management System (LMS) and develop innovative services for distance learners.
• Partner with the General Education Coordinator to develop instructional services in University Studies and writing classes.
• Establish short and long-range goals, objectives, and priorities, aligned with those of the Library and the University. Participate in continual instruction program planning and assessment activities, including the collection and reporting of relevant data on program effectiveness and student learning outcomes.
• Collaborate with community partners on University initiatives such as the articulation of Pre-K-20 information literacy standards and outcomes.
• Build on existing relationships with academic departments, the Writing Center, University Studies, and the Skills Enhancement and Tutoring Center to develop additional partnerships to expand library support of the University curricula.
• Act as resident expert on Library instruction and information literacy, keeping colleagues informed of current issues and developments in Library instruction, including learning technology and pedagogy. Train and support new providers of library instruction.
• Maintain current expertise through participation in workshops, classes, professional associations and networks, and through continued awareness of the scholarly literature.
• Provide reference and information services for the University’s students and faculty as well as members of the general public through work at the reference desk and through various information and communications technologies. Includes work during some evening and weekend hours.
• Select books, serials, databases, and other information resources to support the instructional and research needs of students and scholars in an assigned discipline. This assigned area may change according to the needs of the University.
• Contribute to the work of relevant committees and workgroups in the Library and the University, as well as to the work of professional associations, locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally.
• Pursue active publication and research agenda and meet expectations for faculty service and scholarship in accordance with the Library and University’s promotion, tenure, and post-tenure review guidelines.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
• ALA-accredited MLS;
• At least 3 years experience coordinating, developing, and delivering broad-based library instruction services within an academic library;
• Demonstrated teaching and group communications skills;
• Supervisory and training experience;
• Experience assessing instruction services and student learning outcomes;
• Experience delivering information literacy programming using learning management systems;
• A strong customer-service orientation;
• Experience managing multiple priorities to meet deadlines;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Experience working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds;
• Knowledge of relevant trends, techniques, and issues in academia and library service and instruction;
• Demonstrated ability to produce clear statistical and executive reports;
• Ability to successfully pass a background check.

• A graduate degree in an education-related field;

Diversity Resident Librarian

The Western Washington University Library seeks a creative and innovative person to serve as Diversity Resident Librarian. The Houghton Library of the Harvard College Library is seeking a Curator of the Harvard Theatre Collection. Reporting to the Associate Librarian of Houghton Library for Collections, the Curator has primary responsibility for administration of the Harvard Theatre Collection, including collection building, collection promotion, and working with faculty and students. The Curator interacts collaboratively with the Associate Librarian for Public Services and the Associate Librarian for Technical Services on matters relating to access, cataloging, and digitization of the collection, and with faculty, Houghton curators, and staff from Harvard’s Loeb Music Library, the Harvard Film Archive, and Harvard’s Office of the Arts and Culture in matters pertaining to collection development and programs. The Curator will engage faculty and students in aligning Theatre Collection programs with teaching and research. The Curator will represent Houghton Library at meetings of professional and scholarly organizations, especially those pertaining to the history of the performing arts.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor of Arts required and a minimum 5 years work experience in a special collections department, preferably in an academic research library environment. MLS strongly preferred; An Advanced degree in a subject relevant to the collection strongly preferred.
• Experience managing a collections budget and working with the development office in the cultivation of donor and financial resources.
• Knowledge of the history of the performing arts and the antiquarian book market
• Reading knowledge of at least two modern European languages required
• Basic knowledge of library systems and catalogs and issues concerning digitization and catalog access to the collections required.
• Proficiency with standard MS Office Suite, database, and spreadsheet software
• Experience in a supervisory and project management role required

Public Health and Health Sciences Librarian

Position and Responsibilities:
The University Library seeks a committed and energetic librarian to serve the teaching and research needs of students and faculty in the areas of public health and the health professions. The expanding Institute of Public Health is engaged in developing research efforts focused on finding solutions to pressing urban health issues. The School of Health Professions encompasses the divisions of nutrition, physical therapy and respiratory therapy. Digital Collection/Metadata Librarian

LAC Group seeks a Digital Collection / Metadata Librarian for a contract position within a prestigious government agency located in Greenbelt, MD. The Digital Collection / Metadata Librarian is responsible for collecting, preserving, and presenting digital information in all formats, applying indexing and metadata, and maintaining the Library's bibliographic and archival databases. This includes metadata application, authority control, quality control, and other duties associated with the creation and maintenance of item- and collection-level data for a variety of print and digital materials.

As a member of the Electronic Library Systems Team, the Metadata Librarian reports to the Team Lead and works independently as well as with teammates, library colleagues, patrons, and community partners to develop and provide access to information and materials that support the scientific and engineering research and public outreach needs of the agency.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Employs emerging metadata schemas to make library resources available to our patrons.

• Serves as a resource person concerning OCLC, cataloging, classification, metadata, database maintenance, record loading, and workflow issues.
• Maintains statistics and produces monthly reports.

Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in library/information science, archives administration, or other relevant field from an accredited program.
• Minimum of one year experience cataloging book and non-book formats in an automated environment using OCLC and an ILS, such as SirsiDynix Unicorn.
• Knowledge of electronic and traditional cataloging standards (AACR2R, LC classification, LCSH, MARC formats) and familiarity with emerging standards, such as FRBR and RDA.
• Experience with relevant thesauri or ontologies and one or more metadata schemas or tools (XML, RDF, Dublin Core, MODS, METS, EAD, OAI/PMH, etc.).
• Demonstrated knowledge of file formats, media migration, metadata, database management, and digitization techniques.
• Knowledge and recent experience with digital initiatives and repositories, particularly Fedora.

The Archivist will be responsible for planning, developing, and implementing a university archives program within the academic research library setting, managing university records in all formats, including digital, pertaining to the heritage of the Loyola Marymount University community or retained in the University's interest. Responsibilities include appraising collections through formulated selection practices and supervising the transfer of selected records to the university archives for permanent retention, providing access to collections through proper arrangement, description, and processing, and assisting university departments with developing records management plans. The Archivist will participate in the department’s public services programs providing reference services, class lectures and tours, and curatorship of gallery exhibitions. The Archivist reports to the Head of Archives and Special Collections.

Other position specific accountabilities are as follows:

o Prepare and maintain current collection guides for all record groups within the Archives, mounting electronic versions on the department’s website, maintaining pages as needed, and making selected collection guides available on the Online Archive of California.
o Build and manage an internship program to process and provide access to the Archives.
o Participate in a departmental program of preservation and conservation of materials, prioritizing preservation needs within the University Archives collections.
o Identify, write, and participate in grant proposals and projects.

The ideal candidate must have a broad knowledge of current trends in higher education and academic libraries in respect to, and experience in, archival administration and academic records management. Other skills and knowledge include: contributions to librarianship through publications, research, and participation in relevant professional associations; and service through university and library committee work.

Required: A Master's degree in Library Science or Archival Studies from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent advanced degree. Minimum one year professionally responsible experience in an archives within an academic library environment. Understanding of records management fundamentals. Knowledge of descriptive and encoding standards, including DACS and EAD. Excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively with administrators, researchers and scholars making use of archival collections. Strong public services orientation. Evidence of well developed organizational, time, and project management skills. Evidence of well-developed interpersonal skills, initiative, leadership, creative energy and resourcefulness. Must be self directed, flexible and adaptable to change, analytical, creative, and results oriented.

Preferred: Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in an archives within an academic library environment. Certified Archivist. Knowledge of content management systems. Knowledge of rare books and manuscript librarianship. Grant-writing experience.

Hiring Salary: $52,850 to $68,759 commensurate with experience and salary history.

Media Librarian

Description
This is a tenure-track position. The Media Librarian is responsible for evaluating, managing, and promoting the multimedia collection to support curricular needs. Duties include supervision and training of clerical staff and student assistants, coverage of the service desk, and development of the center’s collection. The Media Librarian provides media-related library instruction sessions and assistance to users and participates in planning, collection development, outcomes assessment, committees, and professional development. Some evening and weekend shifts are required, as is occasional reference desk coverage.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of film and mass media history and maintain an interest in contemporary trends in media and related areas. S/he will have experience with media content in a variety of formats in an online environment and will be knowledgeable regarding evolving technologies in the digital media field.

Requirements
ALA-accredited MLS degree, 30 additional graduate credits, and three–four years’ experience in providing media-related library services. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and collaborative skills, will work both independently and in a team environment, and will train staff in library applications.

Preferred
Second Master’s degree in a relevant subject area and experience in an academic library setting are highly desirable.

Doe/Moffitt Libraries’ staff collaboratively build the print and electronic collections for Doe and Moffitt; provide reference services in-person and virtually through various technologies; engage in library instruction activities; manage various public service units; and serve as liaisons to more than 58 academic departments, centers, and programs on campus.

Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Head of Instruction and User Services, the successful candidate will work as a core member of the team providing information to individuals needing an introduction to the Library's collections, services, and online database platforms; offering subject and curriculum-based reference service to students working on class projects and research papers; and providing general and specialized reference service to researchers, scholars, graduate students, and undergraduates working in the humanities and social sciences. In addition to in-depth reference service, the librarian will provide informed connections between students and subject, area, or language specialists, and make informed referrals to campus subject libraries, public and specialized libraries, and information centers as appropriate. The librarian will also independently plan and deliver original class content for courses in a wide range of academic departments; develop guides, web sites, online learning objects, and other instructional content to support faculty and instructors; and participate in the Library’s drop-in workshop program.

The librarian will be working with a 40,000 volume print reference and bibliography collection covering the social sciences, humanities, and area studies, including the Library's rich collection of government documents. The librarian will be accessing, teaching, and referring to subsets of a vast array of digital resources, including web-based public access catalogs, web-based electronic resources, including indexes and abstracts, full-text article databases, online encyclopedias and gateway sites, and other print and electronic reference resources.

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to work effectively in a shared decision-making environment and to be active professionally. Professional contributions beyond the primary responsibilities are required for advancement in the Librarian series. The successful candidate will show promise or evidence of such contributions.

Communication Librarian

American University Library is seeking an innovative, energetic, and service-oriented librarian for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Librarian for the School of Communication [SOC], beginning Fall 2010, subject to budgetary approval.

Responsibilities: The librarian will facilitate excellence in research, teaching and learning through developing collections in Journalism, Public Communication, and Film and Media Arts; through information literacy instruction; and through research assistance and consultation. The Communication Librarian supports the academic programs of SOC and other academic programs.
Works closely with the faculty and administration of SOC to ensure that the University Library is able to meet their research and pedagogical needs and to increase awareness of library resources, including special collections related to journalism. Reviews and selects research materials (print and digital) to support faculty and student research for SOC. Provides high-level subject specific reference assistance to SOC faculty and students, as well as basic research assistance to all students and faculty. Works with SOC to establish and assess information literacy learning outcomes, supporting requirements by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and other accrediting bodies, and plans strategies to ensure that all SOC students acquire the information literacy skills necessary to be effective communication professionals. Teaches subject specific instruction sessions and participates in the baseline information literacy instruction for all students. Creates appropriate online tools to support SOC students and faculty. Supports interdisciplinary initiatives across academic units that require expertise in communication librarianship. Identifies fund-raising opportunities for building collections supporting SOC and helps cultivate potential donors. Serves on the Collections Management Team and participates in decisions that affect the overall research materials collection-building enterprise. Assists all relevant entities in self-studies and reaccreditation.

The Communication Librarian is a member of the Division of Research, Teaching and Learning [RTL] and reports to the RTL Director. As a member of RTL, the Communication Librarian also participates in broader initiatives as part of the library.

Library faculty members participate in library governance activities. The Communication Librarian also consults regularly with the SOC teaching faculty and administrators. Library faculty members are expected to develop professionally, to contribute to creative and scholarly research, and to participate in campus-wide and library-wide activities.

Requirements: ALA accredited M.L.S.; graduate degree in a communication related field or more than five years experience as a communication professional. Fondren Library Center at Southern Methodist University seeks a strong, creative and energetic leader to serve as Assistant Director for Research Services. The Assistant Director will provide leadership and expertise in developing programs for effective and innovative delivery of reference services and instruction. Position Description:

The B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library is seeking a Coordinator of Library Instruction to oversee and teach in the library’s multifaceted instructional programs. The coordinator will organize, manage, and publicize existing programs; become aware of the ever-evolving information needs of a dynamic student body; keep abreast of the university faculty’s changing curricular requirements and teaching initiatives; and be knowledgeable about governmental, professional, and accreditation standards concerning teaching outcomes and information literacy. Manager of Library Technologies - PSU Library

The Manager of Library Technologies at the Portland State University Library provides a key role in the leadership of the Library’s information technology infrastructure and services, including supervision of the Library Technologies team’s activities and staff. Specific Responsibilities
