Serials Resources Librarian

The Library-Archives Division of the Wisconsin Historical Society seeks a talented and energetic person to assume responsibility for its serials acquisition and collection development work. It is also responsible for evaluating new content formats including electronic serials resources and for helping to chart the course for the library’s transition from print to electronic holdings for selected titles. This position works in cooperation with other professional staff members to plan, develop, coordinate, and implement all serials work.

Qualifications:
A well qualified candidate will have an MLS degree from an accredited graduate library science program in addition to professional work experience with collection development issues and practices in research libraries; experience with approval plans, serials management tools, vendor relations, and licensing issues; knowledge of library collection assessment tools; excellent oral and written communication skills; and knowledge of evolving research trends in scholarly communications.

The Oregon Multicultural Librarian plays the lead role in collaborative collection development of the Oregon Multicultural Archives (OMA), one of the Libraries’ key special initiatives. The OM librarian is a member of the University Archives unit within the University Libraries. The University Archives’ primary function is to develop the University’s historical records program through the acquisition, arrangement and description, preservation, digitization and display of university records, faculty papers and other OSU related collections. The University Archives also collects and makes available historical materials pertaining to natural resources, especially forestry, and documents the lives and activities of cultural and ethnic groups in Oregon. The Oregon Multicultural Archives comprehensively acquires, preserves, and makes available collections documenting the African American, Asian American, Latino/a and Native American communities of Oregon. The OMA’s diverse collections reflect how these communities have contributed to the identity of the state of Oregon and advance scholarship in ethnic studies and diversity both on the Oregon State University campus as well as on a state and regional level.

Working with Oregon’s cultural and ethnic communities, such as the Urban League of Portland and Oregon’s nine federally recognized tribes, the OM librarian will work to strengthen the OMA holdings while expanding its digital presence. Outreach to OSU faculty, students, alumni and organizations is also a key component of this position, supporting university wide efforts to emphasize diversity, cross-cultural literacy, and community engagement. Reporting to the University Archivist, the OM librarian position actively participates in research, creative professional activities, and professional service.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
• MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library school or foreign equivalent; or M.A. in History with a minimum of 12 credit hours in archives administration.
• Demonstrated knowledge of archival theory and concepts, including metadata schemes used in the development of finding aids in archival collections, such as Encoded Archival Description, Dublin Core and MARC.
• Ability to work with a broad range of researchers in the use and appropriate handling of archival materials.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the preservation of fragile materials.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
• One to two years of professional work experience in a special collection or archival unit with a focus on cultural and ethnic collections.

Assistant Dean for Collections and Technology

The Taubman Health Sciences Library (THL) invites applications for the position of Bioinformationist. We are seeking a dynamic, innovative librarian with a strong background in the biomedical sciences, who thrives on change and works well with ambiguity. Liaison Sevices Librarian

The vision of the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center) is to be a world-recognized center of excellence in transportation innovation and a forum for government, industry, and academic cooperation in the development and improvement of transportation and logistics systems. As a part of the US Department of Transportation’s (DOT) new Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA), the Volpe Center’s mission is to serve as a catalyst for change in the development of solutions to transportation problems and the application of innovative technologies and operational practices to make the transportation system more safe, effective, and efficient. This is a Librarian position serves as the Manager of The John A. Volpe Center Technical Library and Information Services. The Librarian provides leadership for the Volpe Center Technical Library and Information Center (VTLIC). The VTLIC plays a vital role in the Volpe Center community by providing information support to the Volpe Center’s staff members who are engaged in transportation studies and research, as well as to RITA and USDOT staff, the national transportation community, and the general public. In addition to leading the VTLIC, the Librarian performs community and customer outreach services and provides reference, research and in a wide range of transportation related subjects.

The library’s extensive collection includes books, technical reports covering all modes of transportation, 180 professional and general interest journals, and 250,000 microfiche titles, the VTLIC's collection represents a significant wealth of transportation literature. The Integrated Digital Services Librarian will be responsible for Langsdale’s integrated library system (ILS) and related services and will serve as the library webmaster. He or she will lead the collaborative design and development of the library’s web-based services and technology planning, including the implementation of the next-generation ILS (a University System of Maryland consortial system). He/she will support technology applications in all library departments, including interlibrary loan, course reserves and digital collections. He/she will maintain an in-depth understanding of technological trends and developments affecting academic libraries through a commitment to ongoing professional development. He/she will work collaboratively and creatively with librarians from Langsdale and the UB Law Library, IT staff, and the University Webmaster.

This is a 12-month, full-time faculty position, reporting to the Director of the Library.

Required Qualifications:
MLS from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent degree; demonstrated knowledge of current trends and issues in library technology; working knowledge of UNIX and Windows platforms and applications, and ability to troubleshoot hardware and software problems; experience with and knowledge of library web design standards, web graphics skills, HTML, XML, CSS, and scripting languages such as PHP and JavaScript. The successful candidate must be able to work both independently and collaboratively, to learn and apply new technologies quickly, and have a working knowledge of metadata standards and best practices in digital library projects. He/she should have strong oral and written communication, analytical, organizational and project management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with an ILS, preferably with Ex Libris’ suite of products including Aleph, MetaLib and SFX.

Project Contractors

American Folklore Society Seeks Civil Rights Oral History Survey Project Contractors

The American Folklore Society, the US-based professional society for the field of folklore studies, is seeking applicants for four full-time, seven-month (May-November 2010) contract researcher positions for the Civil Rights Oral History Survey Project. For the purposes of this project, the Civil Rights Movement is defined as the struggle for equal rights and justice for African American citizens that took place from the 1950’s through the 1960’s in the US.

The Civil Rights Oral History Survey Project is supported by the US Congress, through the American Folklife Center (AFC) at the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). The survey is intended to inform the AFC and the NMAAHC about extant repositories and collections of Civil Rights Movement oral histories and to help find potential interviewees, as a foundation for their future work to collect new oral histories of participants in the Movement, and to provide public information about all such collections.

In Phase 1 of the project (May-July 2010), project researchers, working with the staff of the AFS, the AFC, and the database design and implementation team for the project, will:

1. Provide input into the development of the research plan and a methodology for this survey
2. Gather collection-level information about repositories and collections nationwide
3. Identify, wherever possible, Civil Rights Movement participants whose experiences have never been documented or that need further documentation
4. Enter this information into a database specifically designed for the project
5. Perform additional tasks as required

Researchers will receive hands-on training concerning the use of the database at the beginning of this phase.

In Phase 2 of the project (August-November 2010), project researchers will:

1. Continue their work to gather and input collection-level information
2. Continue their work to identify Movement participants who would be potential interviewees
3. Gather and input item-level information on selected collections into the database
4. Travel to specifically targeted repositories, to refine survey findings and gather item-level information, when such site visits are required
5. Perform additional tasks as required

At the conclusion of each of these phases, the researchers will collaborate with AFS staff on the preparation of progress reports for the Library of Congress, and on the submission of the completed database to the Library at the project’s conclusion.

Pay for each of these four positions is $25,000, plus reimbursement for the costs of travel to the Phase 1 survey training meeting and to Phase 2 site visits.

We seek applicants for these positions who have:

1. Professional training (PhD, or MA minimum) in folklore, oral history, or other ethnographic disciplines, or in archiving or library sciences
2. Strong library and archives research skills
3. Working knowledge of databases (e.g., MySQL in particular
4. Demonstrated professional or personal interest in American history, culture, and society, and in the Civil Rights Movement in particular
5. Excellent self-motivation to accomplish all project tasks independently, successfully, and on deadline
6. The ability to travel, possibly extensively, during the period August-November 2010

The Kraemer Family Library at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs seeks applications from energetic, innovative librarians for its Electronic Resources and Serials Librarian position. As a member of the Technical Services team, this position is responsible for managing the acquisition, access, maintenance, preservation and records for serials in all formats. Other specific responsibilities include assisting with licensing and consortial agreements, communicating with vendors and publishers with regard to serials issues, maintaining and updating entries in the electronic journal list and link resolver, soliciting, maintaining and distributing use data for electronic resources, monitoring and troubleshooting access issues, compiling statistical reports on serials, and adding information on electronic resources to the III system. This position also includes general reference desk duties four hours per week, bibliographic instruction, collection development and liaison with selected academic departments, participation in library policy formulation, university and professional service, and research and creative work.

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs was established in 1965. The student population of 8500 consists primarily of commuter students with campus housing available for 900 students. Doctoral degrees are offered in engineering, computer science, psychology, educational leadership, and nursing practice. The campus also has graduate programs in business, public administration, and a variety of arts and sciences areas. The city of Colorado Springs, located at the foot of Pikes Peak, has a population of approximately 500,000 with tourism, high technology, manufacturing, sports and the military ranking as the key industries within the community. Located 70 miles south of Denver, Colorado Springs offers a wide variety of leisure and educational activities including sports, parks, symphony, local theater groups, museums, and several institutions of higher education.

Appointment and Salary: The successful candidate for this position will be appointed as a full-time (12 month) tenure-track faculty member. Depending upon professional experience, demonstrated accomplishments in scholarly activity, creative work and service, initial appointment may be at the Instructor or Assistant Professor level. Starting salary range is $40,000-47,000, depending upon qualifications. Benefits include 15 days of sick leave, 22 days of vacation, 10 paid holidays per year, University group health care plan, group life insurance, and TIAA/CREF retirement/annuity.

The Reference and Instruction Department is responsible for reference assistance to patrons in a wide range of subject areas and general library instruction at the first year level. The Department has an active digital reference service and is committed to incorporating emergent technologies into both its reference and its instruction missions.
