The vision of the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center) is to be a world-recognized center of excellence in transportation innovation and a forum for government, industry, and academic cooperation in the development and improvement of transportation and logistics systems. As a part of the US Department of Transportation’s (DOT) new Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA), the Volpe Center’s mission is to serve as a catalyst for change in the development of solutions to transportation problems and the application of innovative technologies and operational practices to make the transportation system more safe, effective, and efficient. In carrying out its mission, the Volpe Center supports, on a fee-for-service basis, transportation-related initiatives, primarily for DOT and other Federal Agencies.

This is a Librarian position serves as the Manager of The John A. Volpe Center Technical Library and Information Services. It is located in the Communications and Technology Outreach Division (RVA-21) reporting to its Director. The Librarian provides leadership for the Volpe Center Technical Library and Information Center (VTLIC). The VTLIC plays a vital role in the Volpe Center community by providing information support to the Volpe Center’s staff members who are engaged in transportation studies and research, as well as to RITA and USDOT staff, the national transportation community, and the general public. In addition to leading the VTLIC, the Librarian performs community and customer outreach services and provides reference, research and in a wide range of transportation related subjects.

The library’s extensive collection includes books, technical reports covering all modes of transportation, 180 professional and general interest journals, and 250,000 microfiche titles, the VTLIC's collection represents a significant wealth of transportation literature. The VTLIC serves as a valuable link in the Volpe Center's mission of improving the nation's transportation systems.

We are seeking an energetic, self-motivated, and results-oriented mid-level Librarian professional with experience as a Librarian-in-charge or experience working with library management who will serve clientele with online research tools that increase access to information and that support organizational policy, research, operations, and technology transfer activities. You must be able to work independently and as part of a team, and have superb consulting, communication and presentation skills; Transcripts are required (instructions on how to submit transcripts are described in the “How to Apply” tab in this job announcement).
