Head of Reference and Instruction

Amherst College seeks a skilled librarian and teacher to provide vision, leadership, and management for the library’s program of course-integrated research instruction. S/he will work closely with departmental faculty and librarians to align this program with the methodological, philosophical, and pedagogical peculiarities of diverse disciplines and personalities.

We seek candidates who inspire students and faculty with their teaching and research skills and their fluency with the disciplines and research tools of the liberal arts.

The successful applicant will light up a classroom, command the attention of scholars and students alike, speak eloquently, and write fluently. Crucial achievements include a history of informal mentoring, formal training, selfless service, collegial decision-making, a talent for empowering colleagues, and a penchant both for pushing the envelope and adapting to the proclivities of brilliant and self-assured faculty.

A Masters degree from a program accredited by the ALA or a foreign equivalent is required, as are five years of exemplary teaching and reference service in academic institutions. Additional graduate degrees and evidence of serious scholarship are strongly desired.
