The Emory University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the newly established position of Associate Vice Provost (AVP). This role functions as the chief operations officer for the Libraries and is responsible for managing staff resources, general collections, technical services, and user and access services. Reporting to the Vice Provost and Director of Libraries, the AVP will play a key role in realizing an ambitious strategic vision to transform the Emory University Libraries into one of the nation’s preeminent academic libraries.
Located on a beautiful campus in Atlanta, Georgia, Emory University is recognized internationally for its outstanding liberal arts college, superb professional schools, and one of the leading health care systems in the Southeast. With an annual budget of more than $3 billion, including a research budget of $345.7 million, Emory encompasses a graduate school of arts and sciences; professional schools of medicine, theology, law, nursing, public health, and business; and Oxford College, a two-year undergraduate division on the original campus of Emory in Oxford, Georgia. Emory is positioned along the Clifton Corridor, along with its affiliate, The Carter Center, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. US News & World Report regularly ranks Emory as one of America’s top 20 universities. The Emory University Libraries include the General Libraries, as well as libraries for health sciences, law, theology, business, and Oxford College. Collectively, these divisions provide access to approximately 3.1 million volumes and more than 40,000 eJournals, eTextbooks, and eReserves. In 2006, the newly appointed Vice Provost for Libraries, Richard E. Luce, presented a vision and strategic plan to guide the Emory University Libraries through the year 2012, by which Emory students and faculty and external communities will recognize the Emory Libraries as a model research library that fosters courageous inquiry through the integration of distinctive digital, print, and multi-media resources.
To assist the Vice Provost with the execution of this strategic plan, the Vice Provost and Director of Libraries has created a new position: Associate Vice Provost. This person will oversee operations across the Libraries, and will lead an effort to inspire and align staff to be more directly oriented toward fulfilling the key goals established in the strategic plan. The AVP will help to transform the Emory Libraries to become known internationally as a leader in managing and distributing digital resources, as a center for several important special collections, and a model for “customer service” in an academic library environment. If successful in executing its vision, the Emory Libraries will become a highly adaptable, accessible, and proactive research and learning resource serving the Emory community and scholars around the world.
The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge and understanding of research libraries and the ways in which current and emerging digital technologies are changing the roles of traditional research collections and services, a proven record of effective leadership in a complex academic environment, including successful experience in managing an organization through a period of significant change; experience in realizing a broad vision through strategic initiatives, programs, and policies; a reputation as a high-energy leader with an appetite for innovation and risk-taking; exceptional human relations and communication skills; a commitment to diversity; a proven ability to recruit, retain, and motivate talented staff; expertise in strategic planning, project management, cross-organizational collaboration, and creative approaches to problem solving; a record that demonstrates user-centered program development, assessment, and data-driven decision making; experience with financial management; and an advanced degree in a relevant discipline and a distinguished record of contribution to the profession.
