GIS and Map Librarian

York University Libraries seeks an enthusiastic and service-oriented librarian with excellent communication skills to fill the position of GIS and Map Librarian. Located in the Scott Library, the Map Library supports a print collection of 112,000 maps, 5,000 aerial photographs and 6,600 atlases and books, as well as an extensive digital geospatial data collection. This library is staffed by the GIS and Map Librarian along with an additional 1.5 full-time employees and 6 part-time student assistants. Services include reference, reserves, circulation, collection development and maintenance, as well as cartographic information literacy.

The candidate will lead in the teaching, reference, collection and liaison activities for geospatial and map resources. A priority for the library is working with faculty to integrate library GIS data resources and maps into the curriculum. The librarian will have special responsibility for the Department of Geography collection, liaison, and, information literacy activities at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate will provide research and teaching support in the use of map resources and geospatial and non-geospatial data to researchers across the disciplines including social science, humanities, science and engineering. The GIS and Map Librarian will liaise with the broader geospatial community: campus, provincial, national and international. The candidate will work closely with the York Data Librarian.

The position includes the management of the Map Library, its services and collections. The incumbent will inspire and foster innovation in the delivery of frontline and virtual service to the user community, and will provide leadership in developing optimal access to geospatial and map resources. The incumbent will supervise staff in the Map Library, prepare annual budgets and other reports, and advise on processing print and electronic materials including metadata standards for digital resources and cartographic materials.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

• An ALA-accredited MLIS degree or equivalent with up to seven years post-MLIS experience.
• Educational background relevant to geography, GIS and Maps.
• Extensive knowledge of and expertise with the use of geospatial data and GIS software packages.
• Will have completed some courses in geomatics or GIS.
• Expertise with non-spatial data resources, and statistical software packages.

The GIS and Map Librarian is a continuing tenure-stream appointment at the Assistant Librarian level and appropriate for a librarian with up to seven years post-MLIS experience. The length of term for head of the Map Library is up to five years with possibility of renewal.

Head of Research Services

Copyright Specialist

Libraries are at the center of a vitally important public debate over the extent to which the promise of information technology will be realized. Decisions over the next several years will determine whether people can find and make use of scholarly and cultural works as well as whether we can preserve these works for future generations. The University of Michigan Library has launched a number of major initiatives to improve both immediate and long-term access to information, initiatives that will have a transformative effect on research and scholarship.

The University and the University Library are seeking a dynamic, innovative, and service-oriented individual for the position of Copyright Specialist. Reporting to the Lead Copyright Officer, the successful candidate will assist in the development of guidance, policy, and advocacy on copyright issues to the University and Library communities. This may include contributing to guidance on the copyright aspects of the Library’s scholarly communications and digital collections initiatives, on copyright use in classroom teaching and technology, online courses, distance education, and electronic course reserves, and providing and helping to develop regular educational workshops for the campus community. The Copyright Specialist will help to support efforts to re-conceive the academic research library as a key partner in new modes of scholarly communication. Reporting to the Lead Copyright Officer, the Copyright Specialist is a full-time position (1.0 FTE) for a period of two years. The ideal candidate will work closely with the Lead Copyright Officer to develop services and programs for the UM community. This is an entry-level librarian position and rank is anticipated at the Assistant Librarian level.

The Copyright Specialist will help develop copyright policy for the Library and work closely with a number of important UM Library collections and scholarly communication initiatives, including the Library’s ongoing partnership with Google Book Search, the Hathi Trust Digital Library (http://hathitrust.org), Deep Blue (the UM institutional repository, http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu), the Scholarly Publishing Office (http://www.lib.umich.edu/spo), the Copyright Review Management System (CRMS), to identify works whose copyrights have expired so their digital facsimiles can be made publicly available, and natural language processing initiatives.
The Copyright Specialist will help develop and present workshops, websites, consultations, etc., intended to help members of the campus community to understand and apply both fair use and other principles of copyright, as well as the process to obtain permission to use others’ works, when necessary.

Responsibilities:
This two-year appointment will support strategic planning and identify key areas for strategic initiatives related to copyright matters and scholarly publishing for the Library. The Copyright Specialist will work across the Library and other University departments, as well as with colleagues at other institutions, to articulate concerns, survey the field, and engage the University of Michigan Library community in a consultative process.
Some specific areas for examination include but are not limited to:
-copyright and copyright metadata as they relate to technical services, digital preservation, and HathiTrust;
-encourage use of Creative Commons licenses to facilitate scholarly communication and public engagement;
-serve as dedicated liaison/oversight/coordination with CRMS (Copyright Review Management System) activity and practice; participate in development of next phase of CRMS activity including data collection, education and consultation on different classes of copyright matters; create plan for more active permissions seeking from authors and/or finding copyright holders of ‘orphan works’.

45% Research and Writing – prepare initial discussion papers for internal and/or external conversation and evaluation that identify key issues such as those above and serve as point of departure for examining the issues and possible approaches. Lead preparation of research/white papers with teams of relevant colleagues to state issues, findings, options and/or recommendations with resources and relevant supporting material. Work with Copyright Officer and other designated staff to write strategic papers for publication in variety of venues. Monitor issues in copyright, changes and trends in law domestic and international, evolving practices and research. Prepare briefing materials. Assist with and advise on the development of policy for Library processes related to copyright in light of research. Assist in researching and writing articles, web-based, and materials in other formats for both professional and general audiences on copyright matters.

45% Outreach and Engagement with Library Staff/Profession – Primary: plan, manage and conduct meetings, roundtables, other goal-oriented discussions with stakeholders at the Library. These discussions are guided by the initial discussion papers and will subsequently shape the white papers. Secondary: May assist with general consultations, e.g., screen and answer questions from students, faculty, and staff from across the University and Library on copyright matters. Provide practical guidance. Provide assistance to faculty and members of the University community in publication matters, deposit in Deep Blue, copyright issues related to CTools and other matters of scholarly communication. Encourage respect for copyright law, promote responsible use of copyrighted works, and bolster lawful uses. As appropriate, consultations include information on the options provided by open access, fair use, use of Creative Commons licenses to foster the creation of content that is open and accessible for educational use.
10% Other duties as assigned. The nature of the work is iterative and this allocation is intended to allow for response to evolving findings, determinations, and needs as well as addressing routine administrative tasks.

Required Qualifications:
• ALA accredited Master of Library Science, or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience; a Juris Doctorate degree is desired.
• Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in copyright matters. Practical or applied experience in a legal setting highly desired (so candidate has practical understanding of how policy actually works – need a mix of theoretical and practical capacity).
• Knowledge of scholarly communication issues within higher education. May have knowledge or experience in publishing, music, new media, or any other copyright-related industries.
• Demonstrated experience with legal and policy matters in the context of libraries and knowledge of the workings of a research library. Applied experience in relevant areas of law (examples include but are not limited to: determination of copyright status, permissions, knowledge of publishing practices).
• Demonstrated excellent organizational, communication (oral, written), and interpersonal skills, and ability to work well with faculty, students, and academic administrators in a culturally diverse environment;
• Demonstrated ability in: strong service orientation, creative problem-solving skills, team-focus and results-orientation, and high level of professional judgment.

The Marian Koshland Bioscience and Natural Resources Library at the University of California, Berkeley provides active information support for the research and instructional programs for the departments of Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Integrative Biology in the College of Letters and Sciences, and the College of Natural Resources. This primary user group includes approximately 270 faculty, 700 graduate students and 3,320 undergraduate majors. Responsibilities:
Develops and adapts technologically innovative services to meet the information needs of the campus life sciences research community. In coordination with the Head Librarian and the Head, Information Services, the Emerging Technologies Librarian is responsible for developing a program of web-based bibliographic instruction for the biological and natural resources. Coordinates the development and maintenance of the Bioscience and Natural Resources Library Web site. Trains library staff in innovative uses of software. Administers Macintosh Computer classroom, including investigation of MacIntosh software products.

This librarian will share responsibilities for scheduled reference desk service, as well as electronic reference, providing general and specialized reference in biology and natural resources. Develops web-based instruction through self-instructional techniques such as web-based tutorials and handouts, and participates in classroom instruction (course-related and on specialized electronic resources). UCB librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to be able to work comfortably in a shared decision-making environment, and to be active professionally.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

- Accredited graduate degree in librarianship/information studies; or equivalent combination of education and 3 years of recent research library experience.
- Experience with web-page design using web development and, graphics tools and scripting languages, such as XML, XSLT, CSS, Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop.
- Demonstrated skills in creation of Web documents, including ability to write concisely and effectively for the web.
- Demonstrated aptitude for teaching and developing user-oriented documentation.
- Experience providing reference services with relevant life sciences reference material.

Access Services/Music Librarian

The University of the Pacific seeks an Access Services/Music Librarian with energy, initiative, and vision to provide effective leadership and direction in the provision of library resources and services. The University Library serves the Conservatory of Music, which was founded in 1878 and is the oldest music school on the West Coast. Library collections supporting the Conservatory are integrated into the general collections, and this integrated approach is also reflected in the University Library’s public services model. This position offers a challenging range of activities in public services, collection development, and technical and digital services areas. The Access Services/Music Librarian will focus on public, digital, and technical services initiatives to include Cataloging & Metadata, Digital Initiatives, and education and outreach to Conservatory students and faculty. The Access Services/Music Librarian will provide leadership in the design and implementation of services that enhance access to the University Library’s collections throughout the University community.

RESPONSIBILITIES

* Develops and delivers a range of innovative library services and information resources that facilitate the curricular and research needs of students and faculty in the Conservatory of Music;
* Provides reference and research assistance, instruction, and outreach services;
* Cultivates relationships with teaching faculty in relevant subject areas;
* Employs new technologies in pursuit of teaching and learning, including design and development of web-based resources and streaming audio reserves;
* Selects print and electronic resources in support of curriculum and research in relevant subject areas;
* Collaborates with technical service operations to provide access to the music collection, including original cataloging of scores, recordings and other music materials, authority control, preservation, database maintenance;
* Participates in the creation of metadata for digital projects;
* Working with the University Library’s Circulation staff, responsible for oversight of the circulation, course reserves, and the physical facilities, security, equipment maintenance and management of the library’s collections and stacks;
* Coordinates the Library’s copyright compliance services for print and electronic resources;

· Work effectively in a multicultural setting with a deep commitment to supporting and promoting diversity in higher education;

* Collaborates and actively participates in local, regional, national, or international organizations regarding related issues;
