The J. Murrey Atkins Library at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is in search of a Head of Cataloging to provide leadership/managerial direction and oversight for cataloging operations within Technical Services. RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Provides leadership/managerial direction and oversight for cataloging operations within the Technical Services section
o Manages effective cataloging operations that meet user needs, support section and departmental goals & objectives, and support the library’s mission
o Works closely with public service areas and other areas of the library so decisions are collaborative and communicated to appropriate library personnel
o Provides progressive vision and strategic direction for the Department’s cataloging personnel
o Resolves cataloging and authority control problems for both users and library staff
o Provides training and on-going support for personnel directly and indirectly involved with cataloging or using catalog records
o Formulates and implement local cataloging policies and procedures based on library-wide issues and concerns with input from library personnel
· Plans for, develops, and manages personnel
o Works with Head of Technical Services to design jobs that meet the operational needs of the department
o Ensures that job descriptions and work plans are up-to-date
o Recruits and recommends employees
o Coaches employees to perform to the best of their abilities and skills
o Ensures that all section employees are fairly evaluated according to established procedures
o Handles employee relations problems
· Provides training and support for new/upgraded working software used by cataloging personnel
o Keeps up-to-date with functional changes/enhancement in cataloging related software used by section personnel (e.g. Innovative technical services modules, OCLC interfaces, Cataloger’s Desktop, and Classification Web)
o Ensures that all employees are kept current on the knowledge and skills needed to perform assigned tasks
o Trains departmental personnel in the mechanics and use of specialty software and interfaces
o Assists in the functional implementation of new ILS cataloging modules
· Provides original and complex member cataloging for selected format areas (print, non-print, digital)
o Provides original and complex member cataloging for all types of materials, including audio and video resources in all formats, electronic resources, and monographs
o Revises original cataloging records for subsection staff
o Keeps current with cataloging rules, LCRI’s, national cataloging policies and trends
· Serves as the primary resource for questions and problems in all areas related to cataloging for Library faculty and staff
· Participates in library related professional activities, and in committee service within the Library and at the University level
· Performs other duties as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association
· At least three years of recent experience in original cataloging of print and non-print materials, preferably in an academic library
EXPERIENCE
· Experience supervising cataloging personnel, strongly preferred
· Working experience with the theory and practice of authority control in an online environment
· Working experience with an Integrated Library system cataloging interface, preferably Innovative Interfaces’ Millennium
· Working experience with OCLC Connexion client or browser interface
· Working experience developing and writing procedures
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, ATTRIBUTES
· Evidence of ability to catalog print and non-print materials
· Working knowledge of OCLC interfaces, LC classification, LCSH, MARC formats, AACR2 and Library of Congresses rule interpretations
· Current knowledge of trends in cataloging
· Knowledge of concepts of metadata standards
