The Long Island University Library at the Brooklyn Campus serves a multicultural community of users and provides extensive access to print and electronic resources in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, and health sciences, including pharmacy and nursing. The Electronic Resources & Instruction Librarians will have a thorough grounding in traditional library services as well as demonstrated expertise in digital and emerging technologies.
These are two tenure-track faculty positions which include extensive instruction and reference responsibilities in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment. Persons in these positions will be fluent in new information and communication technologies, especially Web 2.0 and similar library-related applications; be able to provide a high level of reference service; teach classes in the Library’s information literacy and curriculum-integrated instruction programs; and also be highly committed to providing client-centered services. The candidates will also be familiar with copyright and intellectual property issues.
Requirements: MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited institution and at least three years of reference library experience are required. Experience in an academic library is highly desirable. The candidates will possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, and presentation skills. The candidates will also have the ability to interact and work with a diverse range of people including undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, staff, and librarians; ability to work independently and in a team environment.
The successful candidates will demonstrate personal initiative in applying relevant technologies to teaching, learning, and instructional design. They will be able to meet changing user needs; to learn, to critically evaluate and to troubleshoot new technologies. The candidates will have the teaching skills necessary to create and deliver a wide range of information literacy initiatives; will collaborate and coordinate communication with Library administration and faculty; and have the research skills to work and collaborate with faculty to support their research and teaching initiatives. The candidates will have expertise in an online medium and have the vision to translate traditional library services into online media, including digital information and the management of knowledge.
Preferred: In addition to the required qualifications, the candidates should have project management and assessment skills that include an ability to sell ideas and market library services. In addition, candidates should be familiar with library-related products such as OCLC, ILLiad, SFX, MARC, and metadata standards for the representation of library information in electronic format; and should have knowledge of Web design principles and experience with Web site development. Also preferred are second-subject Master’s degree or 30 additional graduate credits, and flexibility to work some evenings and weekends.
