Director of Library Services (County Librarian)

Salary $120,043 to $145,913. Contra Costa County was incorporated in 1850 as one of the original 27 counties of California. It is bordered in the south and west by Alameda County and on the north by Suisun and San Pablo Bays. Contra Costa County’s award winning Library prides itself on bringing people and ideas together. The Library’s primary goal is access to high quality services for over 950,000 children, teens, and adults, and the provision of collections that meet the variety of educational, recreational, and cultural information needs of the community. The Library has almost 400 staff members (169 FTEs) and an operating budget of $24 million. It has 25 community libraries in 18 cities and unincorporated areas. The Director of Library Services is responsible for the overall operation of the County Library and for providing maximum services within established budgetary limits. The focus of this position is on providing community, departmental and professional leadership needed for the planning, development, implementation and provision of library services in the County. Requires possession of a BA/BS from an accredited college/university and a graduate degree from a school of librarianship, accredited by the American Library Association; and 3 years of full-time or equivalent experience in a large public library, as a Library Director, Assistant Library Director, Deputy Director or head of a major library division. Candidates should also have significant experience in personnel management, strategic planning and working with labor unions.
