The Assistant Director, Library Support Services, is responsible for the delivery of the library support services including administrative, financial services, human resources operations and library support functions. Responsibilities include program coordination and development; fiscal accountability: policy development, data analysis and interpretation of library systems: public relations, marketing, and dissemination of public information: strategic planning; and project management.
The Austin Public Library (APL) system consists of the John Henry Faulk Central Library, the Austin History Center and 20 branches. Current budget is $24.9 mil with a staff of 364 employed throughout the system. The Assistant Director will direct a staff of 75 employees. Nationally recognized, the Austin Public Library system has received numerous accolades, nationally and statewide, for excellence and innovation, including the National Library of the Year Award.
The Assistant Director of Library Support Services will be:
• An experienced executive with the ability to combine vision and innovative thinking to lead a major urban library through a critical period of growth with the building of the new central library and moving the department to be the “best managed” premier library;
• A strong leader with proven success in operating a sound fiscal program, experienced in the ability to forecast operational needs, manage large projects, evaluate program performance and analyze library issues to determine program direction and goals and initiate change;
An effective communicator with excellent public speaking and consensus building skills to preside on boards and commissions, to address library and city policy, and be a collaborator that will forge relationships with city leaders, departments, and the community demonstrating a passion for library services
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree plus (5) five years of progressively responsible upper management level experience in a related field of which at least two years have been in a managerial capacity. Prefer experience in governmental financing, human resources, public relations, strategic planning, and library support administration.
