TUFTS UNIVERSITY
Medford, MA
Tufts University invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Tisch Library.
Located on Tufts’ Medford campus, about seven miles from Boston, the Tisch Library serves as the University’s central library in the arts and sciences and in engineering. Physically expanded in 1996, the Library is a central and lively feature of the campus, serving not only Tufts’ undergraduate population of 5,000 but also 1630 graduate students and 780 full and part time faculty in the arts and sciences and engineering. The Library effects a remarkably efficient use of resources, with 900,000 volumes of the 1.2 million held by the Tufts system. E-journal licenses for the system number 38,464. The Library serves both the teaching and research needs of the faculty and students, who report high satisfaction with library services. The Library employs 56 staff and has an annual operating budget of over $11 million.
Reporting to the Executive Administrative Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Director will also have working ties with the new Dean of Arts and Sciences and the Dean of Engineering. The Director will assume the leadership of a vital and essential institution at a time of unprecedented change in the acquisition, dissemination, and preservation of knowledge. He or she will develop and implement a shared vision for the Library in support of the University’s plans; build a strong and effective leadership team within the Library; strengthen communication and information flow between the Library and its constituents; and manage the Library’s operations strategically during a time of constrained but stable resources.
Successful candidates will bring: an understanding of the major challenges facing academic libraries; the capacity to collaborate and communicate with constituencies of faculty, students, and staff; a successful history of staff development and team building; the capacity to understand and support scholarly research; an awareness of current trends in scholarly publication; the ability to manage a complex physical and virtual environment to deliver information services and preserve information; a willingness to seek out and obtain resources for the development of the Library; and the ability to balance support of the Library’s traditional collections and services with the development of new strategies to support scholarship, teaching, and learning. The position requires at least ten years of experience in supporting teaching and research in a complex academic environment and a history of progressively more responsible positions in library administration, along with an advanced degree in library science or its equivalent.
