USER EXPERIENCE (UX) SPECIALIST
USER EXPERIENCE (UX) DEPARTMENT
(3 Year Term Limited Appointment with Possible Extension)
The University of Michigan Library is seeking a talented user experience professional to join our newly formed User Experience (UX) Department. We are looking for someone with a passion for user research, the ability to create engaging designs, and an investment in improving the library users' web experience. This position will be a full-time, three-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal.
The User Experience Department is part of the Library Information Technology Division (LIT) at the University of Michigan, University Library. LIT is the library's key organization for the creation, deployment and support of the library's primary web interfaces (Library Website, Mirlyn Library Catalog, Digital Library Collections, and HathiTrust Digital Library).
The UX department will focus on interface design, mobile design and development, usability testing, user research, web use statistics, and accessibility. The UX Specialist works in a collaborative team environment - working closely with the UX Department Manager and UX Mobile Developer as well as LIT and library-wide project stakeholders. The UX Specialist will help drive interface development through an iterative usability and design process. Candidates who have experience in only interface design or usability will also be considered.
*Demonstration of work samples via an electronic portfolio is a plus.

RESPONSIBILITIES
User Research 40%
• Conducts ongoing discovery of user needs, both prior to and following interface deployment by analyzing user and institutional needs.
• Designs and conducts user research/usability evaluations using a variety of techniques (e.g. formal/informal user testing, online surveys, card sorting, interviews, personas & scenarios, use cases, focus groups, ethnographic research techniques).
• Conducts regular web use statistics and email feedback analysis to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Conducts web accessibility audits.
Interface Design 40%
• Develops wireframes, mock ups, and prototypes to define user interface functionality, navigation, information architecture, interaction, and overall design to help drive user interface development from concept to implementation. Creates HTML prototypes which approximate a functional interface for the purposes of evaluation and communication with the developers.
• Conducts ongoing research into the development of new interface capabilities, enhancements, and user-centered design trends.
• Creates complete interface designs and web graphics.
Project Management & Communication 20%
• Helps to establish project priorities and discuss design goals with LIT managers, project stakeholders, developers, and library staff.
• Performs occasional project management duties including establishment of timelines, coordination of staff, scheduling, and reporting.
• Participates, as needed, on library committees. May provide advice or assistance to other units within the University Library on user research or interface issues.
• Oversees project documentation.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
• ALA-accredited Masters Degree in Library or Information Science, or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree in Graphic Design, UxD, HCI and significant professional experience in a related field.
• Knowledge and experience in areas of user research and usability methods, design, and analysis.
• Experience creating concept sketches, flow diagrams, wire frames, and mock-ups.
• Excellent written and oral skills. Ability to work independently and in a team environment with culturally diverse students, faculty, and staff. Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
Desired
• Experience creating complete interface designs and web graphics.
• Experience designing and/or evaluating Library Systems (e.g., digital libraries, OPACs, library websites) or other complex, data-rich websites.
• Experience designing and/or evaluating mobile interfaces.
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite software, diagramming software (e.g., Omnigraffle, Visio), screen recording software (e.g., Camtasia, Morae, UserVue), assistive technology (e.g., JAWS).
• Familiarity with accessibility coding standards, validation tools, and evaluation techniques.
• Experience creating and editing web pages using HTML & CSS or web authoring software (e.g., Dreamweaver).
• Familiarity with XML, XSLT, Drupal, Javascript.
• Experience conducting log/web use statistics analysis.
BENEFITS, RANK, & SALARY
Final rank and salary dependent on experience and qualifications; position is anticipated to be filled at the Assistant Librarian or Associate Librarian level. Professional positions receive 24 days of vacation a year; 15 days of sick leave a year with provisions for extended benefits as well as opportunities for professional development and travel. In addition, the District provides an excellent fringe benefits package, including paid medical and dental coverage for employees and dependents, and a vision plan, life insurance and long-term disability benefits for the employee only. Retirement is the State Teachers’ Retirement System. Participation in tax deferred plans is available. Child care is available at the College at a reduced rate on a space-available basis.
Assignment & Anticipated Start Date

Responsibilities. The Director of the Worthington Libraries will report to a seven-member Board of Trustees and work with the Board, staff and major stakeholders to achieve the strategic vision for the Library as defined in its 2010-2012 Strategic Plan. Qualifications. A master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited program; a minimum of five years of professional library experience in positions with progressive levels of responsibility; and a minimum of three years of experience supervising a system-wide department or branch library, preferably in a public library. Social Science Librarian
Amherst College Library seeks a Social Sciences Librarian to serve as the Library’s primary subject specialist for social sciences and law, acting as liaison, research instructor, and selector in those disciplines. North Quad Programming Coordinator
The University of Michigan Library invites applications and nominations for the new position of North Quad Programming Coordinator. This position offers the successful candidate an opportunity to develop, manage and present an innovative exhibit and events program designed to enrich the intellectual, educational, and cultural life of the University of Michigan campus, within the context of the North Quad facility. North Quad, an internationally themed residential and academic complex, blends residential life with academics by incorporating highly developed and technology-rich learning environments with modern residential space. North Quad enhances the campus community through a vibrant, internationally focused environment where formal and informal learning takes place 24/7, including small group collaboration rooms, gallery/ presentation space, studios, informal performance spaces, and social spaces.
This position will oversee shared spaces in North Quad, including the Media Gateway, a collaborative space located on the South/West 2nd floor, and other common spaces as appropriate. These spaces are where students and faculty engage with one another in order to develop creative strategies to approaching new media. The Media Gateway, with its more public spaces and alcoves, provides informal, spontaneous meeting points and sites for collaboration amongst students, or students and faculty, and is ideally suited for a more casual engagement with technology. Expected activities include small groups of students and/or instructors working together, students work on group assignments, students generating content to be displayed elsewhere in the building, and a place for collaborative activities. The 2nd floor collaborative space, by contrast, is currently planned as a more scheduled and programmed space that will showcase a rich variety of content, such as student and faculty produced work, international news, films and documentaries, and interactive video walls. Sample activities include creating and displaying student projects, hosting design jams, displaying international news/documentaries/short films, interactive and real time interaction with students studying abroad, and hosting performances, exhibits and presentations.
The successful candidate is expected to combine an ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in a related field with significant relevant professional experience in exhibit and program planning; outstanding interpersonal and presentation skills including demonstrated ability to represent programs to the campus and wider community; excellent organizational skills; experience creating web-based exhibits; the ability to work effectively as part of a team in a collaborative technology-rich environment accompanied by initiative, self-direction and a commitment to innovation, creativity, and excellence.
Working directly with North Quad and Library colleagues, and under the direction of the Director of the Undergraduate Library and Head of Graduate Library Research & Education Services, the successful candidate will assume these responsibilities:
• Develop vision, plan, and implement programming within the Media Gateway and 2nd floor collaborative space
• Oversee scheduling, coordinating and promoting of programs, services, and events
• Collaborate with building stakeholders (the Sweetland Writing Center, the Language Resource Center, the Department of Communication Studies and the Department of Screen Arts and Cultures in LSA; the School of Information; University Housing; the International Center, and the Global Scholars Program) and the University Library to provide rich learning environments and programs
• Provide exhibits and programs that cultivate students’ media and visual literacy, enhance their ability to communicate effectively and work across disciplinary boundaries, advance their capacity to evaluate information critically and produce their own media, and expand their global horizons
• Advance the vision and mission of North Quad through educational outreach and programming initiatives, including creating/designing a broad array of high-quality educational and social learning programs and events
• Collaborate on special projects, participate in long-term planning and service assessment, and serve on committees and task forces, as appropriate
• Participate in regional, national, or international professional and scholarly organizations
• Work with other North Quad staff (i.e. facilities manager and various IT positions) to collaborative support the Media Gateway and 2nd floor collaborative space

• Develop vision, plan, and implement programming within the Media Gateway and 2nd floor collaborative space
• Oversee scheduling, coordinating and promoting of programs, services, and events
• Collaborate with building stakeholders (the Sweetland Writing Center, the Language Resource Center, the Department of Communication Studies and the Department of Screen Arts and Cultures in LSA; the School of Information; University Housing; the International Center, and the Global Scholars Program) and the University Library to provide rich learning environments and programs
• Provide exhibits and programs that cultivate students’ media and visual literacy, enhance their ability to communicate effectively and work across disciplinary boundaries, advance their capacity to evaluate information critically and produce their own media, and expand their global horizons
• Advance the vision and mission of North Quad through educational outreach and programming initiatives, including creating/designing a broad array of high-quality educational and social learning programs and events
• Collaborate on special projects, participate in long-term planning and service assessment, and serve on committees and task forces, as appropriate
• Participate in regional, national, or international professional and scholarly organizations
• Work with other North Quad staff (i.e. facilities manager and various IT positions) to collaborative support the Media Gateway and 2nd floor collaborative space

Fine Arts Librarian
The Katherine W. Dumke Fine Arts and Architecture Library, housed in the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah, is seeking an innovative and creative librarian to work in an exciting and recently renovated learning environment of free and open inquiry combined with a commitment to excellence in service. Reporting to the Head of Fine Arts, responsibilities of the Fine Arts Librarian will include specialized research assistance, instruction, collection development for print and digital resources, outreach, and digital projects in the areas of the visual arts, art history, architecture, music, ballet, modern dance, film and theatre. Responsibilities

These include both personal papers and administrative records covering a variety of topics and subject areas. The archivist works with the UARC Team to assist with the development and implementation of the records inventory instrument, field visits to campus offices, development of the inventory database, data input of survey results, analysis of the record reports, and creation of retention and disposition schedules.
The archivist has full responsibility for managing processing projects and supervising staff, which includes processing archivists, support staff, student assistants, and volunteers. He/she establishes priorities for arrangement and description of the collections, including the processing plans and finding aid structures. The archivist manages the unit workflow and work schedules, and establishes mechanisms for timely turn-around of such collections. He/she hires and trains unit student staff and edits/reviews unit staff work-product, especially the re-housing of the collections, labeling, and creation of finding aids and other descriptions. He/she plans the goals for collection processing and develops processing plans for specific collections in coordination with unit staff and curators in determining order, specificity, and appropriate level of description and analysis. He/she works with the University Archivists in the preservation assessment of collections and in selection of materials for conservation treatment. The archivist works with the BTS staff on appraisal of collections and administration of new acquisitions.

University Librarian
Eastern Michigan University is seeking applications for the University Librarian to serve as the chief administrator for the University Library. The selected candidate will advance and enhance student and faculty learning through visionary leadership in planning, implementing, managing, and evaluating library services, collections, systems, facilities, and budgets.
Eastern Michigan University is a comprehensive university enrolling approximately 24,000 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Bruce T. Halle Library, located in the center of campus, features state-of-the-art facilities. The University Library faculty and staff comprise a congenial, collaborative, and highly productive unit and seek a leader who will inspire them to fulfill the Library’s vision and mission.
Successful candidates must have
• a Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences (ALA accredited); earned doctorate and/or additional MA in a content discipline preferred;
• at least seven years of experience in the field of library/information technology including five years of experience as Assistant Director/Dean or equivalent;
• demonstrated knowledge of the professional responsibilities generally associated with faculty working in a variety of positions in a university library setting;
• demonstrated knowledge and experience in library/information services administration, program design/development, and budgeting;
• experience in recruitment, development, and evaluation of library faculty and staff.
In addition to these qualifications, preference will be given to individuals who
• hold credentials necessary to qualify for appointment at the rank of full professor in the University library and have a strong record of scholarly and professional achievements;
• possess experience working in collective bargaining environments;
• have experience writing and administering grants.
