Reference & Instruction Librarian (Evening & Weekend), Assistant Professor to Associate Professor

Description:
This is a tenure-track faculty position which includes extensive instruction and reference responsibilities in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment. The Reference & Instruction Librarian (Evening and Weekend) will provide reference services including some weekends and evenings (2:00 pm to 10:00 pm). The successful candidate will have a thorough grounding in traditional library services, the teaching skills necessary to create and deliver a wide range of information literacy instruction sessions, as well as experience in the application of digital and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning. The successful candidate will provide a high level of reference service, teach classes in the Library’s information literacy and curriculum-integrated instruction programs, and demonstrate commitment to user-centered service. The successful candidate will participate in planning, collection development, outcomes assessment, committees and professional development.

Qualifications:  
MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution and at least three years’ reference and instructional experience, preferably in an academic library. Strong service orientation. Ability to work collaboratively with teaching and library faculty. Excellent written and oral communication skills. The successful candidate will work with a diverse range of people, will work both independently and in a team environment, and will work some evenings and weekends. Thirty additional graduate credits beyond the MLS (required for assistant professor appointment) or second master’s.

GRINNELL COLLEGE LIBRARIES (REFERENCE AND INSTRUCTION LIBRARIAN) – 10-MONTH TERM (START AUGUST 2011)

GRINNELL COLLEGE. The Grinnell College Libraries seek a librarian to fill a 10-month term appointment with rank as Assistant Professor. The appointee will work assigned hours at a reference desk (the schedule may include day, evening, and weekend hours), provide by-appointment consultations, teach information literacy classes, and fulfill other responsibilities depending on library needs and the appointee’s interests and skills. This position requires a graduate degree in librarianship from an American Library Association-accredited institution, excellent oral and written communication skills, self-motivation, ability to be effective and tactful in working with a diverse campus community that makes heavy demands on library services, and a preference for working in a collaborative environment. Background and interest in the humanities preferred. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply. Grinnell College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college whose curriculum is founded on a strong advising system and close student-faculty interaction, with few college-wide requirements beyond the completion of a major. The College places a high priority on information literacy and the Libraries are integrally involved with student education through teaching, consultation, and development of the collections and tools necessary for conducting inquiry. Reference and Instruction Librarian


Lila D. Bunch Library of Belmont University is seeking applications for a 12 month non-tenured faculty rank position to join the library’s reference and instruction team. We seek a creative information professional who will help us reach our goal of transforming the library into a learning commons by providing innovative solutions, especially in the areas of information literacy, marketing, outreach, and technology.

Job responsibilities include working as a team member to plan and support Bunch Library’s campus-wide information literacy program and to support the university’s learning goals by
  • Developing, teaching, and assessing information literacy sessions for targeted general education courses
  • Coordinating instruction for First Year Writing and Third Year Writing as part of the larger information literacy plan
  • Serving as library liaison to several departments, collaborating with faculty to promote course-integrated collections and instruction
  • Providing one-on-one research assistance at the reference desk, in person and virtually (including night and Saturday rotations)
  • Providing leadership and assistance in identifying and achieving strategic goals relating to the reference and instruction unit and to Bunch Library’s vision to become a learning commons
  • Coordinating marketing and outreach efforts, including the use of social media, to creatively and effectively communicate library services and resources
  • Participating in professional development activities, including serving on campus committees
  • Performing other duties as assigned   

Required Qualifications : An ALA-accredited Masters Degree; an understanding of current issues in academic libraries; knowledge of trends and practices in public services; demonstrated experience developing and teaching information literacy sessions in an academic setting using innovative methods and instructional technologies; demonstrated knowledge of technology trends, standards, and issues in academic libraries and higher education. Preference will be given to candidates with at least three years experience. A second masters degree in a subject field is desirable.

This is a two-year temporary, half-time position starting September 2010.

The University of California, Berkeley seeks an energetic and service-oriented librarian who is interested in a half-time, temporary position to provide reference and instructional services in a dynamic and challenging academic environment within the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, the primary libraries for humanities, social sciences, and undergraduate services on the Berkeley campus. This is a temporary position that spans September 2010 through August 2012.

The Environment

The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally-renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation’s premier public universities. In a highly-diverse and intellectually-rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 23,000 undergraduate students, 9,000 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty. The Library is comprised of 20 libraries, including the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, The Bancroft Library, and the East Asian Library collectively offering extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills. The Library has a collection of more than 10 million volumes and a collections budget of over $17 million. The Library has a current operations budget of over $48 million with nearly 375 FTE employees and more than 600 part-time student employees. The Doe/Moffitt Libraries are organized under the direction of the Associate University Librarian for Educational Initiatives and Director of Doe/Moffitt into five administrative departments: Circulation Services; Interlibrary Services; Instruction and User Services; Research and Collections for Humanities and Social Sciences; and Research and Collections for International and Area Studies.

Doe/Moffitt Libraries’ staff collaboratively build the print and electronic collections for Doe and Moffitt; provide reference services in-person and virtually through various technologies; engage in library instruction activities; manage various public service units; and serve as liaisons to more than 58 academic departments, centers, and programs on campus.

Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Head of Instruction and User Services, the successful candidate will work as a core member of the team providing information to individuals needing an introduction to the Library's collections, services, and online database platforms; offering subject and curriculum-based reference service to students working on class projects and research papers; and providing general and specialized reference service to researchers, scholars, graduate students, and undergraduates working in the humanities and social sciences. In addition to in-depth reference service, the librarian will provide informed connections between students and subject, area, or language specialists, and make informed referrals to campus subject libraries, public and specialized libraries, and information centers as appropriate. The librarian will also independently plan and deliver original class content for courses in a wide range of academic departments; develop guides, web sites, online learning objects, and other instructional content to support faculty and instructors; and participate in the Library’s drop-in workshop program.

The librarian will be working with a 40,000 volume print reference and bibliography collection covering the social sciences, humanities, and area studies, including the Library's rich collection of government documents. The librarian will be accessing, teaching, and referring to subsets of a vast array of digital resources, including web-based public access catalogs, web-based electronic resources, including indexes and abstracts, full-text article databases, online encyclopedias and gateway sites, and other print and electronic reference resources.

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to work effectively in a shared decision-making environment and to be active professionally. Professional contributions beyond the primary responsibilities are required for advancement in the Librarian series. The successful candidate will show promise or evidence of such contributions.


Qualifications
Required:

- MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited library school
- Demonstrated aptitude for teaching and developing user-oriented documentation
- Knowledge of relevant social science and humanities reference resources
- Experience assisting others with Internet resources and computer technology
- Demonstrated initiative and flexibility

Scott Library, the largest of York University’s libraries, houses a research collection of over two million items in the social sciences, humanities and fine arts that includes government documents, data, sound and moving images, electronic resources, archives and special collections. Along with building collections and offering reference assistance, the Scott Library Reference Department has an active and growing information literacy program, which aims to enable students, faculty, and others to recognize the social context of information, to develop information-seeking behaviours that transcend specific finding tools, and to think critically about information.

The successful candidate will participate in teaching, reference, collection and liaison activities in the Libraries and elsewhere on campus, and in the development of new programs and services. This librarian will have special responsibility for Environmental Studies collection activities, liaison, and information literacy teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will also provide research and teaching support in the use of microdata and other data files including use of some statistical software packages.

The chosen candidate will assist students in developing the skills required to locate, evaluate, and use resources effectively; play a role in the ongoing development of information literacy initiatives; support faculty research; participate in special projects, such as assessment, collection reviews, and the development of web-based resources; participate in the shared decision-making of the Reference Department, departmental working groups, committees of the Libraries and of the University; contribute to librarianship by carrying out professional research and/or scholarly work. Some evening and weekend work is required.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

• An ALA accredited MLIS or equivalent with up to three years post-MLIS experience
• Educational background in the social sciences or humanities.
• Strong public service ethic and background.
• Understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of Environmental Studies, including its economic, social and political aspects.
• Expertise with and enthusiasm for statistics, data resources, and statistical software packages.
• Demonstrated understanding of collection development and liaison roles with faculty.
• Demonstrated understanding of the concepts, goals, and methods of information literacy instruction and ability to teach in a variety of settings and formats.

This is a continuing-stream (tenure track) appointment to be filled at the Assistant Librarian level and appropriate for a librarian with up to three years post-MLIS experience. The Environment

The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation’s premiere public universities that serves 23,000 undergraduates, 9,000 graduate students and 1500 faculty.

The Thomas J. Long Business Library is one of over 20 subject specialty libraries on the Berkeley campus. The Long Library is located in the Haas School of Business, but reports to the University Library. Its mission is to serve the information needs of over 2,000 students, faculty, and staff in the Haas School as well as other campus departments needing business information. The Long Library has over 160,000 print volumes, 1.4 million microforms, and thousands of serials in print and electronic formats. In addition, a large digital library of business information is provided through links on the library’s homepage. Responsibilities


This half-time position reports to the Acting Head of the Long Business Library. The Reference and Instruction Librarian will:

- Provides reference and instruction services for students and faculty in the Haas School of Business.
- Develops course guides for undergraduate and MBA courses.
- Participates in collection development activities of the library, including selection of print and digital resources.

Qualifications

Required:


-MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent.
-Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills. Willingness to work in a team environment under the direction of the acting head librarian.
-Evidence of both professional initiative and flexibility.

- Familiarity with business databases, including numerical products such as Datastream, SDC Platinum, WRDS, etc.
- Evidence of or potential for professional contributions beyond the primary job, such as publications, leadership in University and professional organizations, and other research and creative activity.
