Reporting to the Provost, the University Librarian is the senior administrator responsible for managing the resources and personnel of Ramsey Library.  The library advances the intellectual climate of the campus by promoting independent, inclusive, and collaborative avenues of inquiry, cultural enrichment, thought, reflection, and understanding. 

Ramsey Library supports the learning, research and community missions of the University of North Carolina Asheville by providing access to information in both traditional and cutting-edge formats; offering group instruction and individual consultation in locating and using resources for diverse library users; exhibiting leadership for the academic community in the means of accessing and best utilizing information; and assisting faculty in enabling students to achieve information literacy, a core competency in the general education curriculum.   The campus Center for Classroom Instruction and Technology Support is a part of the library organization as well.

The University Librarian directly supervises two professional librarians, one media professional, and one staff member, and bears overall responsibility for the management of the full library staff of about 24 FTE.  The University Librarian manages the budget of the library and provides leadership in an environment of rapidly evolving technologies of scholarly knowledge.  The successful candidate will have substantive accomplishment or reflect demonstrated potential in leveraging university library resources to support the wider needs of a diverse campus environment.

Reporting to the Vice President for Information Services, s/he will assume the leadership of a well-supported university library with capable and experienced staff, widely appreciated by faculty and students and well-positioned for further development. The University of Richmond Libraries include the Boatwright Memorial Library, the Media Resource Center, the Parsons Music Library, and the Business Information Center. The Frederic William Boatwright Memorial Library, opened in 1955, holds more than half a million print volumes, over 100,000 bound periodicals, 36,000 print and electronic serials, and thousands of multimedia items. Boatwright Library serves as a cultural, social, and scholarly center for the campus and for its many community users. The library’s special collections include early materials on Richmond and the South. Its Galvin Rare Book Room houses some 25,000 books, broadsides, manuscripts, maps, newspapers, music scores, facsimiles, and photographs, more than 50% of which can be accessed through the UR Libraries online catalog. The Media Resource Center supports the instructional program at the University of Richmond by providing a variety of media materials, services, and facilities to students and faculty. The Parsons Music Library holds over 16,000 scores, 9,100 CDs, and 9,000 books about all types of music.

Boatwright Library continues the development of innovative digital collections through collaborations with local organizations and with University partners. In FY0910, Boatwright Library embarked on an ambitious joint project with the Muse Law Library to digitize the David Nelson Sutton Collection of International Military Tribunal for the Far East papers. The collection consists of approximately 85,000 pages of official trial transcripts, exhibits, depositions, and opinions. Individuals from both libraries, the Law School, and the History Department are collaborating to design and develop the description, layout, and user interface for the collection.

Candidates should bring a track record of excellence in senior academic library administration along with a demonstrated commitment to the creation of vibrant student-centered library services and a vision for the academic library in the 21st century. Candidates should possess the managerial skills to build and support a strong staff team; the interpersonal skills necessary to develop effective working partnerships with faculty, administration, students, and the Richmond community; and an intellectual style that will inspire the respect of faculty, students, staff members, and consortium partners. Demonstrated competence in fiscal and program planning and financial management is required, as is successful experience providing innovative leadership that balances attention to print and electronic formats. University Librarian

USD’s main library is the Helen K. and James S. Copley Library, which houses more than 500,000 books and bound periodicals and holds subscriptions to 2,500 journals and a wide range of media and digital resources. The UL seeks the advice of the Faculty Library Committee and works in close cooperation with the Chief Information Officer of USD and with the Director of the Pardee Legal Research Center, which is the primary library for the School of Law. In addition to housing collections, the Copley Library provides a wide range of services to the USD community, including study space, meeting facilities, co-curricular programming, computer labs, and other resources. USD also participates in local and national library consortia, including the San Diego Library Circuit Consortium, the Catholic Research Resource Alliance, and the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium.

The successful candidate will be only the third University Librarian in USD’s history, and will have an outstanding opportunity to take the University into a new era. This position requires an experienced library administrator with a strong understanding of the evolving role of university libraries in the 21st century and a clear compelling vision for how Copley Library can more effectively serve faculty and students working across the university and beyond. The UL must have a Masters of Science in Library and Information Science or its equivalent and hold a second advanced degree before consideration for tenure.
