Director of Library Services

DIRECTOR of LIBRARY SERVICES

Gloucester County, Virginia is seeking a dynamic team orientated leader with excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Gloucester County is centrally located on the Eastern Seaboard with easy access to the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia’s Historic Triangle, and major cities, yet abounds with small town charm and hospitality, while offering a wealth of outdoor recreational opportunities. Our library system, an integral part of our rural community, serves an estimated population of 36,000 with a staff of 33 (including volunteers), collection of 99,000 items, and circulation of 227,000 in 3 locations (modern 24,000 sq. ft. main branch, satellite branch, and bookmobile). Director plans and directs all phases of library operation for the County, and serves as the County’s records manager. Work involves community relations, financial activities, staffing, program development, strategic planning, and grant administration.

Qualifications: Requires MLS from ALA-accredited school; intermediate computer skills; and valid Virginia driver’s license. Also requires 6 to 8 years of progressively responsible public library experience including 3 years in a supervisory or management position; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. POSITION TITLE: Director of Library Services

POSITION RANK: Administrator VII

DEPARTMENT: Library Services

SUPERVISOR: Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs


POSITION SUMMARY
Through collaborative governance and participatory decision making, provides leadership for every aspect of Library operations including strategic planning, development and promotion of Library services, staff and fiscal administration.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises professional and support staff.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages the fiscal administration of the Library including preparation of the annual budget, establishment and maintenance of appropriate budgetary procedures, etc. Works with Library staff to prepare departmental budgets.

Provides leadership to plan, implement, and evaluate University-wide Library services appropriate for an academic library.

Hires, supervises and evaluates Library faculty and staff .

Develops collaborative relationships with academic departments, Information Technology Services and library consortia.

Ensures compliance with academic and accreditation assessment standards.

Promotes University-wide information fluency standards and efficient use of Library learning resources.

Supervises and provides support to Library departments for maintaining quality services, strong collections and programs.

Actively advocates for the needs of the Library and promotes its services to the University community and beyond. Oversees the preparation of proposals and applications for external funding.

Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those enumerated above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master of Library Science program (MLS) or the equivalent and six years of experience in academic library administration required. Demonstrated ability to formulate and implement library services policies and procedures, manage complex budgets and supervise faculty and staff required. Demonstrated knowledge of technological applications and trends in university libraries required. Credentials and/or experience substantially comparable to the above may also be considered.
