Assistant Professor Tenure Track

The School of Library & Information Studies, College of Communication & Information Sciences, at The University of Alabama, announces an opening for the position of assistant professor (tenure-track). This is a new faculty position.

New faculty members have a considerable opportunity to shape the character and direction of the School as it continues to integrate the traditions of librarianship with new technologies. The successful tenure-track candidate will be actively engaged in research, have an interdisciplinary approach to teaching graduate students, possess the ability to work with multiple constituencies, be able to teach in the SLIS core curriculum, and possess an earned doctorate. Work history in a library or another information environment or related experience is desirable.

Applicants with expertise in one or more of the following areas are of particular interest:
  • Information sources and services, to include e-reference, sources and services in specialized areas (government documents, business, etc.), and information literacy programming
  • Practice and management in areas such as preservation and conservation, archives and special collections, and digitization
  • Organization of information in areas such as cataloging, metadata, and indexing and abstracting

The School, with 14 faculty members, offers an ALA-accredited Master’s program, an MFA program in the book arts, doctoral courses that contribute to a multidisciplinary doctorate in communication and information sciences, and undergraduate courses in information science. The School is selective in admissions for all program options, and the MLIS program ranks among the top 25 programs in North America.

SLIS faculty research interests include digital libraries; information retrieval; human-computer interaction; user interface design; video retrieval; history of small presses and related publishing; electronic publishing; culturally diverse populations; education for library and information studies; analysis of large data sets; bibliometrics; library history; scholarly communication; corporate culture in academic library management; social conception of knowledge through cultural evolution; k-12 education policy; role of classification for collaborative organization of web resources; health librarianship and informatics; and social disconnects in information technology, access, and design. Creative activities focus on collaboration between letterpress printer, author, artist, and hand bookbinder; and materials and techniques of historic bookbinding structures.

Tuscaloosa is ideally located in the Southeast convenient to Birmingham, Atlanta, Mobile and the Gulf Coast, New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville, and Chattanooga. Assistant Librarian, Tenure Track

The Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) University Library (http://www.ulib.iupui.edu) seeks a creative, energetic, and service oriented individual to serve on the Professional Programs Team, reporting to the library’s Professional Programs Team Leader. Responsibilities of the position include support for students and faculty in the IU School of Journalism and IU School of Informatics through information literacy initiatives, research consultation, and collection development; staffing the reference and research help desks; engagement in marketing and promotion activities; and additional duties as assigned.

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) University Library (http://www.ulib.iupui.edu) seeks an innovative, energetic, and service-oriented individual to serve as team leader for the Access Services Team. Reporting to the Associate Dean, Collections & Information Access, this librarian is responsible for the Circulation Desk, Course Reserves, Book Stacks, Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery and Building Security. This position will provide leadership, organization, and management of all library services associated with these areas. Position duties include planning, which encompasses ongoing team development, and enhancement of an excellent service culture. Responsibilities also include developing, interpreting, and implementing policies and procedures; coordination of public areas, including building security and developing recommendations on space utilization; scheduling, supervising, training, and evaluating 9 staff members and .5 librarian; collecting and analyzing user and collections statistics; and assessment of the team’s programs and services. The library values collaboration and broad engagement in library-wide decisions and initiatives. In addition, 25% of the position will be assigned to the Science, Engineering & Technology, Nursing, and Informatics Team and will be the library’s liaison to one or more science/technology disciplines with responsibility for reference desk service, research support, classroom instruction, and collection development in the assigned discipline(s).

• Ability to manage a variety of tasks and shifting priorities in a fast paced environment
• Ability to organize and synthesize collection and user data using Excel, Access, etc.
• Experience with an integrated library system (ILS) (Sirsi Dynix preferred)
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience with current and emerging trends and technologies related to circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan and document delivery systems

Desired Qualifications:
• Experience with ILLiad, RapidILL, OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing, Odyssey/Ariel, HTML/Web authoring tools, and Web 2.0 applications
• Academic library experience
• Reference desk experience
• Classroom instruction

Education Librarian, Tenure Track

The Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) University Library (http://www.ulib.iupui.edu) seeks a creative, energetic, and service oriented individual to serve as the education librarian at the rank of Assistant Librarian. Reporting to the Team Leader for the Professional Programs Team, this librarian is responsible for developing and maintaining strong relationships with the School of Education (http://education.iupui.edu). The successful candidate will support the School of Education by designing and presenting instructional sessions; developing the library’s collection of education materials; and providing research assistance to students, faculty, and staff. Responsibilities include working with local schools to develop appropriate partnerships and coordinate class visits to the library. This individual will also serve as liaison to IUPUI’s Center for Teaching and Learning (http://ctl.iupui.edu/). As part of the library’s partnership with CTL, this librarian is involved in planning and developing workshops for the Center focusing on information resources, as well as providing individual consultations or referrals for faculty doing projects in the Center.

Assistant Professor

Reference/Education Librarian

Adelphi University seeks an Assistant Professor tenure track as a Reference/Education Librarian to be responsible for the reference desk service, collection development, management of the Library’s Curriculum Materials Center, participation in library instruction, and participation in other responsibilities shared by Library faculty. Applicants must hold a master’s degree from an ALA accredited school of library/information science. A second master’s or similar proof of advanced study is required for promotion to Associate Professor and tenure. Degree or coursework in the field of education is desirable. The successful candidate will also be expected to possess (a) experience in library instruction; (b) knowledge and experience with electronic resources; (c) excellent interpersonal and communication skills; (d) the ability to work effectively in a collegial environment, and (e) evidence of ability to meet criteria for promotion and tenure.

Work Year: 200 day work year as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
