Reference and Instruction Librarian

GRINNELL COLLEGE LIBRARIES (REFERENCE AND INSTRUCTION LIBRARIAN) – 10-MONTH TERM (START AUGUST 2011)

GRINNELL COLLEGE. The Grinnell College Libraries seek a librarian to fill a 10-month term appointment with rank as Assistant Professor. The appointee will work assigned hours at a reference desk (the schedule may include day, evening, and weekend hours), provide by-appointment consultations, teach information literacy classes, and fulfill other responsibilities depending on library needs and the appointee’s interests and skills. This position requires a graduate degree in librarianship from an American Library Association-accredited institution, excellent oral and written communication skills, self-motivation, ability to be effective and tactful in working with a diverse campus community that makes heavy demands on library services, and a preference for working in a collaborative environment. Background and interest in the humanities preferred. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply. Grinnell College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college whose curriculum is founded on a strong advising system and close student-faculty interaction, with few college-wide requirements beyond the completion of a major. The College places a high priority on information literacy and the Libraries are integrally involved with student education through teaching, consultation, and development of the collections and tools necessary for conducting inquiry. The Grinnell College Libraries were the 2011 ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries award winner in the college library category.

General Statement of Duties: Responsible for supervising all aspects of the operations of the Lowell campus Dobelle Library serving students, faculty, staff and community users. Participates in developing policies and procedures to provide clear direction and priorities in the context of the Libraries' strategic directions, fostering cross-department collaboration and promoting mutual understanding through effective communication to ensure smooth operation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• As part of the library management team to represent the Lowell campus library, establishes and reviews policies, procedures, goals and objectives for the staff at the Lowell campus. Assesses user needs and the effectiveness of library services and resources. Serves as an advocate for the unique needs of the diverse library users at our urban campus.

• Provides direct supervision of all full and part-time support staff at that library. Provides technical supervision of all professional staff at that library. Develops staff training materials, writes performance evaluations and conducts evaluation meetings. Assists in developing work schedules for part-time staff to ensure coverage for services during open Lowell library hours.

• Coordinates the Lowell library practices and procedures with those of the other two departments of the MCC libraries; the Technical Services department and the Bedford campus library Public Services. Meets regularly with the other library coordinators to discuss, plan and make recommendations with regard to library services and policy.

• Coordinates both reference and instructional services to students, faculty and staff to assist in their use of resources in all formats available in our library and remotely. Prepares supporting materials to assist with reference and instruction. Assists with the ongoing development and revision of the library websites.

• Plans and implements programs of library instruction to support MCC's information literacy objectives. Collaborates with teaching faculty and other librarians to develop and assess the effectiveness of instructional programs that promote information literacy within the curriculum. Guides other librarians in the preparation of materials in support of this instruction. Has exclusive responsibility for scheduling the Kerouac Room for library instruction and all other college use through the R25 scheduling software.

• Oversees the development of the Lowell library collection by identifying, evaluating, and selecting materials to be added to that collection in support of the mission of the college, the specific courses taught in Lowell, and the unique needs of the population we serve. Supervises the annual inventory of the Lowell collection which includes discarding outdated or damaged materials as needed.

• Collaborates with faculty and contributes to the information needed to assess college programs through the program review process as well as programmatic accreditation where applicable.

• Organizes, prepares and presents professional development opportunities for faculty and staff to update their skills in information retrieval, assist them in developing instructional strategies to maximize student success in information literacy, and to showcase new resources offered by the library as they become available.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities continued:

• Explores, develops, promotes and assesses the use of innovative tools in support of the library's information literacy instruction and virtual reference services. Supports the development of online collections and services. Creates and implements online learning modules to enhance the library's face-to-face instruction and web-based learning programs. Serves as the key contact for all questions and staff training in use of the Circulation functions of our ILS.

• Seeks out and helps implement new ways of providing library services and information to our users in response to continuing changes in library technology. Collaborates with librarians in NOBLE and MCCLPHEI to improve existing library services or implement new ones.

• Supervises all interlibrary loan activity in the Lowell library. Develops new services for providing ILL and document delivery as new technologies become available to us.

• Attends meetings relevant to the operation of the library and serves as the library's representative at the discretion of the Assistant Dean for Academic Resources and Instructional Technology.

• Serves as a backup for other library staff in their absence to ensure that we maintain a basic level of library service. Performs related tasks as needed.

• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, service-oriented with a good understanding of assessment tools and have knowledge and skills in user services and administrative services.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under general direction, the purpose of the classification is to coordinate the daily activities of a Library or major function thereof. Employees in this classification provide professional library services to community users, students, faculty, and staff involving library operations and library resource development and access. Classification is responsible for assisting in the development, management and implementation of library policies and programs, budgets and assisting in the selection, training and evaluation of staff, providing circulation and reference services, developing/teaching bibliographic instruction and information literacy, assisting researchers in the use of print/electronic resources including online search services, CD-ROMs and networked information resources. Reference and Instruction Librarian


Lila D. Bunch Library of Belmont University is seeking applications for a 12 month non-tenured faculty rank position to join the library’s reference and instruction team. We seek a creative information professional who will help us reach our goal of transforming the library into a learning commons by providing innovative solutions, especially in the areas of information literacy, marketing, outreach, and technology.

Job responsibilities include working as a team member to plan and support Bunch Library’s campus-wide information literacy program and to support the university’s learning goals by
  • Developing, teaching, and assessing information literacy sessions for targeted general education courses
  • Coordinating instruction for First Year Writing and Third Year Writing as part of the larger information literacy plan

Preference will be given to candidates with at least three years experience. A second masters degree in a subject field is desirable.

About the job

This position provides operational leadership for the Mansfield Library @ The University of Montana College of Technology-Missoula campuses and provides liaison responsibility to The University of Montana –Missoula Mansfield Library.
               
This is a tenure track library faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a twelve month appointment.

Primary Functions of the Position

1.       Manages the operation of the ML@COT to ensure optimum access to UM Libraries’ information and services for the faculty, staff and students located at the two UM COT-Missoula campuses.  This includes representing and communicating the specific information and services needs of the COT to Mansfield Library Administration in a proactive manner.   The position is responsible for the communication of policy, available services and creation of procedures.
2.       Manages the collections to be located at the ML @COT including selection, space management for collections and participation in collection development planning overall for UM Libraries.
3.       Works with the Mansfield administration in the planning for the ML@ COT facility to ensure the library is effective in its use of space, furnishings and equipment.
4.       Provides or ensures the training and development of support staff and students assigned to the ML@COT.
5.       Provides primary point of instruction for COT students on effective use of the UM Library collections, services and the methodology of conducting research.
6.       Active member of the Mansfield Library leadership as well as appropriate COT curriculum and planning committees to ensure effective utilization of the library.

7.       ALA-accredited masters degree in library or information science.

Branch Library Manager

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages all branch operations, including interviewing, scheduling, evaluating, and training of branch employees; manages the branch facility, including overseeing the general building maintenance; maintains positive public relations with the community by promoting library services, working closely with The Friends group and developing rapport with customers, key community leaders and organizations; develops library programs for children, young adults or adults; oversees children, young adult and adult materials collections, and branch book inventory; provides general reference services to customers, including readers’ advisory and book talks, and performs other tasks as necessary.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Proven aptitude in professional library science, preferably in a public library setting, including a comprehensive knowledge of reference sources, reader interest levels, books and authors; demonstrated supervisory skills; ability to assess community interests and needs and develop programs and services accordingly; excellent customer service skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; professional presentation skills and sound professional judgment.  A Master of Library and Information Science degree issued by an ALA-accredited school of library and information science and extensive professional librarian experience are required.
