Head of Cataloging
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Provides leadership/managerial direction and oversight for cataloging operations within the Technical Services section
o Manages effective cataloging operations that meet user needs, support section and departmental goals & objectives, and support the library’s mission
o Works closely with public service areas and other areas of the library so decisions are collaborative and communicated to appropriate library personnel
o Provides progressive vision and strategic direction for the Department’s cataloging personnel
o Resolves cataloging and authority control problems for both users and library staff
o Provides training and on-going support for personnel directly and indirectly involved with cataloging or using catalog records
o Formulates and implement local cataloging policies and procedures based on library-wide issues and concerns with input from library personnel
· Plans for, develops, and manages personnel
o Works with Head of Technical Services to design jobs that meet the operational needs of the department
o Ensures that job descriptions and work plans are up-to-date
o Recruits and recommends employees
o Coaches employees to perform to the best of their abilities and skills
o Ensures that all section employees are fairly evaluated according to established procedures
o Handles employee relations problems
· Provides training and support for new/upgraded working software used by cataloging personnel
o Keeps up-to-date with functional changes/enhancement in cataloging related software used by section personnel (e.g. Innovative technical services modules, OCLC interfaces, Cataloger’s Desktop, and Classification Web)
o Ensures that all employees are kept current on the knowledge and skills needed to perform assigned tasks
o Trains departmental personnel in the mechanics and use of specialty software and interfaces
o Assists in the functional implementation of new ILS cataloging modules
· Provides original and complex member cataloging for selected format areas (print, non-print, digital)
o Provides original and complex member cataloging for all types of materials, including audio and video resources in all formats, electronic resources, and monographs
o Revises original cataloging records for subsection staff
o Keeps current with cataloging rules, LCRI’s, national cataloging policies and trends
· Serves as the primary resource for questions and problems in all areas related to cataloging for Library faculty and staff
· Participates in library related professional activities, and in committee service within the Library and at the University level
· Performs other duties as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association
· At least three years of recent experience in original cataloging of print and non-print materials, preferably in an academic library
EXPERIENCE
· Experience supervising cataloging personnel, strongly preferred
· Working experience with the theory and practice of authority control in an online environment
· Working experience with an Integrated Library system cataloging interface, preferably Innovative Interfaces’ Millennium
· Working experience with OCLC Connexion client or browser interface
· Working experience developing and writing procedures

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Broward County is seeking a dynamic, proven leader for the position of Assistant Director of Libraries of a large nationally recognized library system. The library system includes a staff of 800 + employees, a Main Library, the African American Research Library and Cultural Center, five Regional Libraries, 31 Community Branches, a digital branch with 24/7 remote access, and partnership facilities with local educational institutions.
This is a highly responsible administrative position that involves planning, organizing, and directing the activities of Public Service within the Libraries Division of County Government. Work involves responsibility for the administration and direction of operations of the Libraries Public Service Section, including the development of policies, supervision of professional personnel, planning and organization of services to the public and development of administrative procedures. The incumbent assists in administering the County’s Library program; directs through subordinates the planning, scheduling and coordination of divisional activities; develops policies, procedures and priorities to meet established goals.
The incumbent assists in developing, implementing and maintaining strategic, fiscal, and capital improvement plans for the Libraries Division; assists in the preparation and monitoring the Division’s budget and prepares special reports as required; assists with coordinating and planning of new library facilities; periodically serves as Libraries consultant to participating communities, municipal governments, library advisory boards, school officials and the general public; plans library development programs and initiates them in accordance with accepted policies; address groups and prepare reports and informational articles concerning the library programs; and attends conferences, public and professional meetings. Assignments are received from the Division Director in the form of broad instructions or general program objectives. Work is performed with considerable independent judgment within established guidelines by an administrative superior. Performance is reviewed periodically through conferences and written reports. The incumbent performs other related work as required.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A Master's Degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association; six (6) years progressively responsible experience in a large multi-service library system, including two (2) years in high level supervisory and administrative experience; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
SPECIAL INFORMATION: Experience in a large complex Public Library system within a Commissioner form of City/County/State Government is highly desirable. Such experience should be clearly documented in the resume.

Reference and Information Services Librarian (2 positions)
Responsibilities: Successful candidates will contribute substantially to the library's ongoing initiative to integrate public services, collections, and instruction in the dynamic environment of desktop information delivery. The person we seek will provide strategic leadership, administrative supervision, and day-to-day management of the campus Library and Learning Commons (LLC), the mission of which is to enhance student learning and academic success. This position oversees the operation of a facility designed to integrate educational functions to assist and support students as they learn: the library, learning commons, computer centers, tutoring centers, services for students needing developmental remediation, and instructional resource centers and related services, such as educational technology and multimedia. The Associate Dean collaborates with faculty in the liberal arts and sciences, workforce programs and baccalaureate curricula to assess evolving user needs; plan and develop methods to enhance and support the curriculum and pedagogy; provide for the information needs of students and faculty; encourage integration of technology and instruction, and advocate for academic support services that promote the learning process. The Associate Dean reports to the campus Executive Dean and plays a significant role in the campus academic leadership team.
The successful applicant at a minimum will have a Master's degree with eighteen (18) graduate hours in a teaching discipline from an accredited college or university supplemented by three (3) years of administrative and/or teaching experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Evidence of demonstrated leadership required. Reporting to the Head of Research and Instructional Services, the Resident will participate in the Libraries’ information literacy instruction program for precollege, undergraduate, and graduate students; provide general reference services; contribute to collection development activities; become familiar with other units and functions of the Libraries; and assist in collaborative planning, analysis, and assessment of programs and services. In year two of the program, the Resident will engage in an in-depth, concentrated experience in an area of specialization and will develop and complete an applied research capstone project that could be presented at a professional conference. Residency Program Librarian

Position Description: The Libraries seeks an entry-level, two-year Residency Program Librarian to serve in one of three departments – Reference & Library Instruction, Digital Library Services, or the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences. In addition to learning about and providing service in one of these departments, participants learn about other departments in the Libraries, serve on committees in the library system, and initiate a program of professional development and contribution. Of great importance is that each resident also chooses one or more tracks providing a significant experience in an area of individual interest outside the assigned department, such as collection development, archives' processing, cataloging, scholarly communication, or one of the other two assigned departments.
Placement assistance is provided and program participants are eligible and encouraged to apply for regular professional positions that may arise in the Libraries. This position reports to the head of the assigned department and it is likely that it will require some evening and weekend commitment.
Mentoring: The department head, along with the Director, Human Resources and Diversity Programs, serve as mentors for residents. Opportunities for peer and informal mentoring are available, as well, and regular meetings are arranged with the University Librarian and appropriate Associate University Librarians.
Professional Development: Professional development is a strong component of the Residency Program. Participants are encouraged to give presentations, attend national and regional conferences, and/or write for professional publications. Founding Library Director

Oakland University seeks an experienced, energetic leader to launch a state-of-the-art library to support the innovative curriculum and mission of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine (OUWBSM). The new, primarily digital, medical library will be part of the University Library system, benefitting from and contributing to shared collections and collaborative relationships with both the University Library and the Beaumont Hospitals library system. A new building, with space for the medical library, is being planned.
About the Medical School
The OU William Beaumont School of Medicine, a partnership between Oakland University and Beaumont Hospitals, will be the first new medical school in Michigan in a generation. The OUWBSM will train physicians to practice with a patient-centered focus, emphasizing wellness and prevention, and the management of acute illness and chronic disease. Its innovative curriculum will emphasize: working in teams of physicians, nurses and allied health professionals; training students to embrace web-based learning and use new technologies in patient care; and promoting applied research. Beaumont Hospitals, the largest, non-university affiliated, post-graduate teaching program in the country, will be the medical school’s exclusive clinical partner and is one of only 20 hospitals nationwide with 10 or more clinical programs listed in U.S. News and World Report’s America’s Best Hospitals. OU is undergoing the accreditation process with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), with plans to welcome the first class in 2010.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate with library and medical school administration in the planning and implementation of a library in accordance with LCME standards.

The Science Librarian will be responsible for faculty liaison, collection development and the delivery of information literacy programs for assigned disciplines and will participate in research consultations and outreach activities to departments and research centres. Responsibilities include selection of information resources, collection management and evaluation in such fields as nursing, biology, chemistry and physics. He/she will work individually and as part of a team to develop and provide reference services and information literacy programs to York’s community of users taking full advantage of the online learning and web environments. She/he will also participate in project and committee work for York University Libraries and the University. Some evening and weekend work is required.

Steacie Science and Engineering Library is one of four libraries within York University Libraries. The Steacie Science and Engineering Library attracts a half million visitors a year and provides specialized resources, and reference and instructional services to the science, engineering, and health programs of York University. Qualifications: An ALA-accredited MLIS or equivalent with up to three years’ post-MLIS experience. Educational background or library experience relevant to science and particularly health related disciplines. Knowledge of health, science and technology literature and reference resources, and awareness of emerging trends in scholarly communication. Experience with Web authoring software and Web support technologies; familiarity with Web 2.0 technologies preferred. Strong client-centred service philosophy and evidence of professional initiative and leadership. Ability to handle multiple responsibilities and projects concurrently. Strong written and oral communication skills, including demonstrated skills in teaching and public communications. Demonstrated understanding of concepts, goals, and methods of information literacy instruction and ability to teach in a variety of settings and formats. Ability to work effectively and collegially with a diversity of colleagues and clients. Interest in research, professional development, and university committee work.
The Science Librarian position is a three-year contractually limited appointment to be filled as Adjunct Librarian level and appropriate for a librarian with up to three years post-MLS experience. Interlibary Loan Librarian Tenure Track
As a librarian on the Bibliographic and Metadata Services Team, the successful candidate will create original cataloging records for theses, audio-visual, philanthropy, and foreign language materials, and support the Team Leader for Bibliographic and Metadata Services with other duties and projects as assigned.
As Interlibrary Loan Librarian, the successful candidate provides active leadership and direction in managing 2 full-time paraprofessional staff and 1-2 FTE student library assistants in the day-to-day operations of interlibrary loan and document delivery services. Responsibilities include maintaining the unit’s web presence, coordinating the library’s copyright compliance, managing materials and student wage budgets, statistical reporting, and representing the library to consortium partners at the state, regional, and national level. As Interlibrary Loan Librarian, this individual keeps current on trends in the profession and provides leadership in evaluating, recommending, and implementing new technologies and service models.
